Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. They are also told they must read information about their current situation and a survival guide with their new omnicom. New crew-mates might see a tall dragonish guy with wings (but don't call him that) and purple girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

[ooc: Only new characters and Command Staff can start new threads for introductions, to limit the number of threads. Everyone else, just tag in and have your guys greet the newbies.]

Billy was glad to confirm that. That would make things slightly easier. "Then you're Commander Hawke," he said. He wasn't sure on the title, but that had to be close. This would help Lash, he was sure of it.

"Lash is an ensign in the ship structure and one of my coworkers in the engineering department. She'd probably want to kill me if she knew I was telling you this, but she'd really like to see you."

"Correct." It was certainly nice to know that his reputation preceded him. His eyes were already scanning the room for any sign of that telltale afro, even if he wasn't entirely sure why she'd be here when she escaped the collapsing building. Presumably, anyway.

"Is she here, then?" Meaning the Observation Deck.

"No, she told me that she wasn't coming to the meeting with the new crew members this time." If he explained exactly why, she would definitely kill him. So that was a no go. "You'll probably find her in a Sensorium or in the laboratory, or I can try to message her."

[identity profile] black-hawke.livejournal.com 2011-10-02 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
He furrowed his brow, somehow managing to look even more uncomfortable.

"No, I'll look, or message her myself." Assuming he could do such a thing with this...omnicomm. "What is a Sensorium, exactly?"

"It's something that's sometimes called a holodeck, I believe. You stand inside it and the grey space becomes a virtual duplication of any environment you'd like. It can be customized however you want, and it's usually used as the best way to eat food. It's easier to eat the amorphous and tasteless slop we're fed if it tastes like a turkey dinner."

And that was just the most popular place on the ship. There was much more to see!

[identity profile] black-hawke.livejournal.com 2011-10-02 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, if he was headed there anyway, Hawke was sure he'd see it for himself shortly enough.

"If you could direct me to them, I would appreciate it." The sooner he found Lash, the better.

Billy nodded, turning toward the exit of the deck. They'd have to make their way past quite a few people to get there, but that was all right. Better start soon!

"We won't be going far. It's just around the bend and down the hall on this floor. You can use the hub you came from to access the City, the engineering department, and some of the other areas, but many of our most important spots are up here.

He pointed off the areas as they passed them. "That's the mess hall, the media library, the art hall is on the other side..."

[identity profile] black-hawke.livejournal.com 2011-10-03 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
This place was huge, much bigger than the Observation Deck let on, though if the size of the pod caverns was any indication, exploring the vessel in full was going to take some time.

"Are there maps available?"
morphitudinous: (Adorkable's the word)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-10-03 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy answered by rummaging in his pocket, pulling out his more battered omnicom, and moving to the correct page. "There's a map on every omnicom. You just press that button, then the other one. I wanted it to be somewhat easy to find."

He showed every room, pointing in the direction of the quarters where the beds were before entering the Sensorium halls. "There's more than one here. You can try to knock or look for any do not disturb signs, but there's rarely an indication if it's occupied. It's almost considered a tradition for us to walk in on each other here, so I wouldn't do anything private in a sensorium unless you can lock it."

[identity profile] black-hawke.livejournal.com 2011-10-06 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah. Excellent." Some button-fiddling, and there it was. A map!

Still, he continued following Billy simply because this was a strange new place and it seemed very easy to become lost in the corridors and rooms.

"How do they work, exactly?"

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-10-07 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
This was the interesting part to explain. "In a sense, they're direct translations from your mind to the area around you. The ship's AI will transform everything into something from your memory or imagination, just as you direct it to. They're mostly used to recreate familiar experiences from home, but they're very useful. For example, you can bring all the raw materials for a project inside, imagine the tools if you don't already have them, build it, and take the finished product back out with you. You can also imagine food and drink---they're still water and the amorphous slop, but your mind is tricked into believing it's actual food."

That was another preferred use of the rooms. "They're also useful for training with dangerous stunts, because you can control the level of injury that can happen."

[identity profile] black-hawke.livejournal.com 2011-10-08 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, holograms." Very advanced holograms, apparently, but Hawke would make sense of what he could. There was so much to take in. "It sounds useful."

Still, he wasn't sure how he felt about fooling one's mind, not when he wasn't even certain if he was really alive or not.

"I take it resources are limited."
morphitudinous: (A cannon? Really?)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-10-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Billy nodded, feeling that common frustration over the lack of supplies.

"Yes, and yes. We have occasional shore leaves where we're given opportunities to buy food and clothing, but they're not frequent enough for us to be permanently stocked. We have to eat amorphous slop and drink through water injections most of the time, and we don't have enough cloth for everyone."

Billy owned a few simple outfits he'd bought on past shore leaves, but that was all. He was now wearing a plantsuit in solidarity with the newly awakened people.

It was time for a very, very important question.

"Is there coffee?"
morphitudinous: (Adorkable's the word)

[personal profile] morphitudinous 2011-10-11 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Billy shrugs. "It depends on our supply of coffee beans, but we should. There's a coffee machine kept in the engineering department for late nights. Lash would know where it is, since she's built one."

That clever girl was good for something! Who knew.
