Meat n' Greet

The rest of the crew assembled on the Observation Deck to meet the latest editions to their numbers. After the revelation that their worlds are gone, many of them are even more eager to see people they knew from home.

Several people are set up near the doors to provide the new people with omnicoms and comm rings. They are also told they must read information about their current situation and a survival guide with their new omnicom. New crew-mates might see a tall dragonish guy with wings (but don't call him that) and purple girl among their number. There are also several authoritative-looking figures ready to introduce themselves.

There's a lot to tell the new people. It's going to be a lot to take in.

"In a war that affects all of us, you mean."

Yes, he could see how that might be slightly different, but he still had his doubts. "But it doesn't bother them? Magic doesn't cause fights or riots with the non-magic people?"

"Yeah, exactly. And no, I've never seen anything like that," Will said. "I don't see why it would though. Not with so many people who don't have magic also having some sort of powers, or the advanced technology here."

"Huh."

Cedric has to consider this. If the Mugles here aren't going to be distressed by or envious of magic...the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy wasn't always in place. He remembered that from one of many History of Magic lectures, or at least he thought he did. It was never very easy to listen to Professor Binns drone on and on for an hour.

"So we want to know everyone's strengths. If you're right, then...if I show you something, can you promise to keep it a secret? For now, until I get this sorted."

Will smiled, nodding. "Sure. That's fine with me," she said.

Well, if Will hadn't already guessed from some of Cedric's earlier questions that he had magic, this would've made it obvious. Still, there was no reason for her to tell anyone else until he was ready. It was pretty obvious that magic was kept a secret back home for him.

"All right. Looking round to make sure they weren't being watched, he huddled closer. The last thing he needed was to cause a panic. When he was sure that the coast was clear, he reached into his sleeve and withdrew a highly polished wooden stick.

The best demonstration was probably a simple spell. He didn't want to enchant any muggle electric things, they tended to react badly to magic, so perhaps a conjuring would work.

Concentrating hard, he waved the wand in a quick little arc and thought the incantation. On cue, a little blue flame erupted from the tip, one that he could safely pick up and hold in his hand. He demonstrated this, tucking the wand away and holding the little flame in his cupped hands.

"I can do more, but I need to speak to this department first," he whispered.

Will blinked, before smiling. "Oh, nice! And yeah, I totally understand the need for that," she said. "So, have you always had magic like that, or were you given those powers some point later in life?"

Cedric nodded. "Yes. Magical people are born with the ability, but it doesn't always show right away. It usually runs in families, but sometimes wizards and witches can show up in Muggle families. It really scares them, because they find out when their child accidentally sets something on fire or makes a pot explode."

Will nodded. "I see. That's pretty interesting. I've never heard of it working like that, though I guess it does make sense. Though with all the different versions of Earth that we're coming from, it's pretty easy to have things happen different with regards to powers and magic."

Cedric had to wonder. "Magic works differently, huh? Not everyone's been keeping it a secret, to start?

Maybe they didn't use wands. Maybe they had even greater powers, or different types of manipulations. He had a lot to learn.

Will nodded. "Yeah. I know there's at least one person who can shoot giant, magic pink lasers all over the place. I think she's the department head, actually, now that i think about it."

Magic pink lasers? Cedric had never seen a spell like that before, but he'd be interested.

"All right, I'll go see her sometime. Who should I be looking for?"

Will took a moment to think. "I think her name's Nanoha Takamachi. She's asian, but her hair seems to be a bit reddish rather than black. I think she usually makes a message over the omnicoms after a podpop, so it shouldn't be that hard to find her."

"The omnicom? Oh!" Cedric realised, tugging on the little muggle invention he'd left on the table. "This thing. I suppose I'd better figure it out. Is it as complicated as it looks?"

Will laughed. "Not really," she said, grinning a bit. "... Though I guess if you can use magic for everything you might not be used to things like that, so maybe I should show you how to use it."

"I'd like that," Cedric grinned, sitting by for an explanation. "It'd help to be able to read this thing."

"Alright!" Will said, moving a bit closer to Cedric, pulling out her own omnicom so that he could see what she was doing. "It's pretty simple, actually," she said, before she started going into the explanation on how the coms worked.

"Oh! I should be able to get what I need now, thank you," he nodded politely, glad that he was now set up. "So I'll see you around?"

Will grinned. "Yeah, definitely. My name's Will. What's yours?"

"Cedric," he smiled, offering his hand. He was feeling better than he had when he'd started.

"So if I want to see you again, I use this?"

Will nodded, before taking his hand. "Yeah, exactly. Just send me a message, and we'll be able to make plans to go... do something, I guess."
