Chaos! Rumble in the Crystal City!

[This is for Team 2: Jinx, Mindfuck, Zouichi, Ter'thelas, Ashley, Edward, Jamie, Victoria. The first shore leave / observation deck post is here where they can say goodbye to others.] ]

The massive crystal spire jutted skyward perhaps a thousand feet. Alone, it would be beautiful.

With lasers playing up and down its sides, floodlights sweeping the sky, and banners hanging over it, though, it was just tacky. ULTIMATE ENTERTAINMENT! proclaimed one banner. D☺☺M AWAITS YOU! another added. And over top of the massive doors chipped in the entrance hall flashed a brilliant neon sign: CRYSTAL CITY.

The path led up to and through the wide-open doors, into a black hall beyond. No sooner had the last of the crew stepped in than the doors slammed shut behind them, plunging them all into pitch blackness. But not for long; a second later, two bright-white signs flared into life.

MEN -->

<-- WOM N

(A bulb was out.)

Each arrow pointed to a door surrounded by an ominous crystal. Try to go through the wrong gender's door and it would reject you, possibly making disparaging comments about your mental status. The rooms inside looked as if they'd been lifted straight from an athletic stadium; a row of lockers stood opposite a few lacquered benches, and each had a crewmember's name on it. Inside their assigned locker were a set of clothing along with instructions to retract their plantsuits to minimal coverage and don the provided garb.

The fanservicey-but-functional provided garb. Tight-fitting shirts that breathed magnificently, sleek shorts (rather short shorts) for both men and women. None of it interfered with motion in the slightest, and the outfits were only slightly uncomfortable, mostly because they were just a bit tight.

Once everyone had garbed themselves properly -- and not before -- the doors on the far wall snapped open. Through them, the members rejoined their companions in a large room (which of course made no physical sense, as the doors could not possibly have led to this room, but who's counting?), in a grand crystalline foyer filled with sweeping spotlights, glittering sparks deep in the walls, and extremely canned applause.

A drumroll began over the applause. A hush fell over the prerecorded crowd, the drumroll building in strength and then declining again, like a wave, to build suspense.

The drumroll abruptly stopped.

"TURN TAPE OVER!" blared over the invisible audio system. After a moment, fumbled clattering and muffled grumbling echoed distantly from some far point in the chamber, followed by a sharp CLACK, then a click. The drumroll resumed.

Then, in a crash of cymbals and a triumphant fanfare, the spotlights all swung as one to focus on a hitherto unseen throne at the far end of the room.

He knows all too well what happened the last time she really hated something, but he doesn't care to think about that right now. He's only just found her again. The thought of her leaving doesn't bear thinking about.

Instead, he tries to focus on getting her to calm down enough to try again. There's got to be something that'll spark that hint of bravery he's seen in her from time to time. The Doctor would be able to do it easily, were he around. But can Jamie?

"Shh, it's all right." he says, stroking his thumb along her jaw. "Listen to me. We don't even know if there's anything like that in the other boxes. There might not be. And the others are counting on us to get the key. I know it hurts, but you've faced down Cybermen, Victoria. Ye shot that Cybermat, remember? I believe ye can do this too. And when we get out of here, I promise ye I'll find someone who can help with what's happened."

He pulls away, but it's only so he can pull the shirt off his head. Shaking the last bits of the coals away from it, he offers it to her. "Here, ye can take this. Make a cape or a hood from it, and that should help protect ye some."

This is really hard for her, but at least she's not whimpering anymore. After what might seem like an eternity (but only just a few seconds) she gives him a shaking nod, using her hands to dry her tears.

"But what about you? I don't want you to get hurt either...this place is just so evil and awful Jamie! So awful!" But no sense in getting into that again. She knows that, and it is true. She has faced the Cybermat and the Cybermen. And if they don't win here, it could be their doom. Victoria bites her lip, and nods a second time.

"A-alright. I just hope we have enough time and that we're able to find it!"

"Och, it'll take more than a few wee coals to hurt me," Jamie replies, sounding perfectly confident that he's not going to be injured. He's not worried about that. As long as they can get through this and she's not badly hurt, it doesn't matter if he does get the odd burn here and there. Hopefully the extra layer of clothing will help her to avoid being burned again, and that's the important thing.

Since he's already crouched down, it's a matter of no time at all for him to allow her to get back over his shoulders. She'll have to do whatever she's going to do with the shirt quickly, though, because as soon as they're up he's heading right for the box with that stuck stick.

"Remember, Victoria, ye can do this," he calls up, that same encouraging note in his voice. Maybe they'll get lucky with this one at least, and she'll be able to pull the baton out and get the box open at the same time. He's reasonably confident she'd be able to jerk her hand back quickly enough to avoid any serious injury there. "We'll get that key yet."

She doesn't say anything, merely nods, even if Jamie can barely see it. With a shaking hand, she grabs the baton again and hits the box nearest where it was floating. At first, nothing happens. Without much strength, she's still very much out of it from all this terrible terror singing inside her veins and sapping her strength, but after the third hit, she regains enough confidence that the fourth one is strong enough to make the hatchet open.

Near automatically, her eyes close in fear of what's going to come out...

As Victoria hammers on the the box, Jamie adjusts his grip on her ankles. If something bad did come out of this box, he wanted to be ready to get her out of the way without her falling off this time.

The hatch opens, and he automatically starts to move when he catches sight of something out of the corner of his eye. Just a glimpse, but it's enough to stop the movement forward.

"Hey, is that..." A glance down confirms that it is what they're looking for. "Aye, it is! It's the key!"

Quickly, he crouches down so she can get off of his shoulders, making sure that he doesn't inadvertently drop her in the process. He'll get his shirt back in a few minutes. Right now, though, he's more concerned with getting what they came here for. "Come on, let's grab it and get out of this place."

No need to tell Victoria that twice! In one swift motion that surprises even herself, she slides off from Jamie's shoulders and grabs the key with her right hand.

"I have it!" she tells him, and nods at his comment about leaving the place. The sooner, the better. Victoria realizes now how satisfying it is to leave a room like this, victorious. Once they are both out, she gives him a hug, her skin still burning, but ecstatic about their prize.

"Oh! Oh we did it Jamie!" She might be caught in the moment, you see.

"Aye, we did!" It's a good feeling - the victory, that is. The hug, while unexpected, is an even better one. He wraps his arms around her, returning it with one of his own, a pleased, somewhat crooked smile slowly appearing on his face.

He could stay this way a very long time, but they're not out of the woods just yet. There's still the challenges the rest of the team has to face, and then they maybe they can see about getting out of here once and for all. Reluctantly, he ends the hug after a few moments longer, a more serious expression replacing the smile.

"Now let's hope the others can get through as well. I've a feeling it'll not be as easy as all that."
