Lirath - Ship Survival

As the battle raged outside, those remaining aboard Stacy had their hands full preparing for the incoming flood of refugees.

Positioned near the Bleed-Gate orbiting Lirath, Stacy stood ready to receive the refugees. Ship after ship ascended as quickly as they could, some of them making a break for the Bleed-Gate itself while the smaller ships were forced to dock at Stacy, unloading their cargo of refugees before setting off again for the planet's surface again to take on more passengers.

Several small units of GIA soldiers were also sent up to help the Transmigration crew take in the massive amount of refugees, many of whom were tired, wounded, and scared. It wouldn't take long for the ship to begin filling with people.

With the battle raging outside, and the Ohm clambering outside, trying to get in, it would be a tall order to keep all of the refugees safe and calm, but the crew didn't have much choice.

Sandy was startled and felt her skin hardening as the woman added to the growing chaos. "I was just trying to help." She muttered crawling out from under the device. She stood up too fast though and smacked her head on the Omnioxygenator. "Crap!" She hunched over holding the back of her head with tears welling up in her eyes.

Anwei had been going to get more bandages; she put them down a little too quickly and came over with fast, choppy strides, stepping over the wet spots on the floor without looking.

"It's all right," she said, stopping to put her hand on Sandy's shoulder and squeeze. If she noticed Sandy's skin changing, she did not appear to notice.

Then she rounded on the woman and Pira; though her stance and face were that of a very angry, very dangerous person, her tone was perfectly controlled as she said, "Ma'am, now that your arm is splinted, you are free to return to the rest of the people waiting to be offboarded." She moved half a step closer. "Now would be a good time."

The woman and child left; Pira cast one look over her shoulder at Sandy, but didn't dare wave.

Sandy boggled at how swiftly Anwei had come to her defense. Just when her usual feelings of dislike and annoyance at adults had been confirmed another adult came along and knocked it away again.

The stone that had been hardening on her skin melted away and Sandy trotted after Anwei looking for another something to help with. "Thank you." She managed.

"You're welcome. Hey." She slid to one knee, looking up a little at Sandy. "You didn't do anything wrong, but these people have just seen their homes destroyed. Even if we beat the Ohm, they might never go back to their planet. They're hurt and they're scared and they're taking it out on each other - and on us. It's not your fault."

She stood and peeped at the top of Sandy's head - no bleeding she could see. "Would you like to distribute more bandages, or help me wipe down some tables?"

Thinking about these people who had lost their homes put a sort of fire in Sandy's eyes. What the Ohm were doing was wrong, and she may not be able to fight them but the least she could do would be help out here.

"Whatever we need most, I can help wipe the tables real fast and then go get the bandages?"

"That works. Here are your gloves," sterile plastic gloves, puncture-resistant and grossly oversized for Sandy, but she could work them down between her fingers, "and here's a medical waste bag. And here are your salad tongs."

Plastic salad tongs, with the little spoon-and-fork design at the end.

"You pick up the bandages, wipes, anything that's been used, and put it in the bag. Try not to use your hands; there could be shrapnel mixed in some of it. I'll be getting the needles and hemostats and putting them to be sterilized. Once everything is off the table, I'll wipe and we go to the next one."

Her arms were longer, so it made more sense for her to wipe; and she was willing to risk a fingerstick. The sterilization fields were good, but she hoped they also killed prions and shardites.

"Got it!" And just like that she was off darting and scrambling about collecting collecting used material in a rapid fashion. What she lacked in knowledge she made up for with energy, and her small size made it easier for her to move between beds and people.

Anwei was right behind her, picking up needles and hemostats, wiping down the tables with disinfectant, and moving on. It helped that she had considerable practice walking on her knees, so she could duck and twist between people. But Sandy moved like wind through grass, and the gap between them grew slowly larger.

"Your hero name must be Lightning, am I right?" she said, deploying another bag to help her clean a table that seemed to have been drenched in pink bile. "You're fast!"

"W-what?" that made her miss a step and she had to hop on one foot to catch her balance. Her cheeks were slightly pink as she protested, "I'm no hero or anything like that. I'm just...here." She found it hard to express the words "I'm good at running away"

"I know the feeling," she replies. "Who knows? Maybe by the time this is over, we'll both be heroes."

Last table done; she can seal the bag of tools to be sterilized. "Time for me to get back to the front door, I think. The bandages I put out are there," she points, "and you can put the waste bag on that big X between those two cabinets; Stacy will take it away. Thanks for helping; I mean it. We need all the fast hands we can get."

"N-no problem." Sandy turned and bolted to drop off the trash and collect more bandages, not wanting Anwei to see her flustered at the idea that she could be a hero.

Her a hero?

No way.
