Lirath - The Coming Storm

After receiving the warning the Tapestry had provided them, along the order to begin preparations from Councillor Kang, the crew had been getting ready for upcoming combat with the Ohm.

Unfortunately, the rather vague nature of the warning they received meant they had no particular way of knowing exactly when this battle would occur. Understandably, this put some of the crew on edge, but at the very least they had some prior warning that they would be facing the Ohm, rather than being thrown blind into such a dangerous situation. Combat drills, vehicle maintenance and armory inspections seemed to be regular sights for the week or so following Kang's message. Not much time to prepare, but the crew worked with what was given to them.

Eventually, however, the call came.

||Alert, Alert,|| Stacy called out throughout the ship, ||Priority One message from GIA High Command. All crew members please report to the Obs Deck. Repeat, Priority One message from GIA High Command, All crew members please report to the Obs Deck...||

Stacy kept repeating the message over and over until the crew began making their way towards the Obs Deck to receive the message.

[ooc: As implied by the post, we're assuming the crew's ICly had a one-to-two week heads-up about the battle. It was supposed to be played out, but RL timing prevented this from working out. Feel free to come up with the details of your character's preparations on your own

Also, as usual, please wait for subthreads to go up before tagging in.

Edit: It's up! Feel free to start tagging in!]

"Well, I do have practice now..." Signum says, happy to find out just how far her friend's relationship with the dragon lady went without having to be forward about it. "And from what you told me, elves are generally much more sedate. I can't imagine dragons being any different."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Signum nods in return.

"I don't get to tell you this often, Vivio..." she begins, "But you're a very strong warrior. Stay alert and fight cautiously, but don't worry about being overmatched."

And just like that, all his dreams shattered into a thousand pieces that were further crushed under the hoof of disappointment.

His arms dropped to his side where they limply hung and his previously cheery exterior was replaced by a frown. "Oh...well, okay."

Now this battle lost roughly thirty percent of its 'charm'!

"On the nose," Wheatley told him. "You're a pretty observant one."

"Lost a hand, eh? Sounds painful. You know, I bet if that happened back at Aperture Science, they'd have outfitted him with interchangable bionic hands and run him through a gauntlet of tests to see how each of them handled. Ah, the good old days..."

[identity profile] ronnae.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ronnae narrowed her eyebrows, but not enough to seem disrespectful, a small huff and a curt nod was all that followed as she turned her attention back to the grouping up of the crew.

It almost felt like she was back in the barracks listening to one of the paladins or shamans.

Oh. Well. You know. As long as people were only losing hands. Chell looked mildly horrified at the thought of getting parts of her hacked off.

But she could at least nod in agreement. Their newness was probably obvious, and her own nervousness for the coming mission was difficult to hide.

"Well, as I said, if ever." He noticed Signum's general pleasure with the statement, and was honestly quite flattered that she cared. She had, after all, always struck him as someone quite reserved. "We did technically get married once already, after all."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Reserved, sure, but very happy when her friends are happy. Plus the Takamachis have put her in a sappy mood lately.

"That's true," Signum says. "I'm not sure if those weddings are valid anywhere but that planet, though."

Not that she would mind that extra kind of bond with Hayate, but she's not going to say as much.

"You know, I think that's something they do here, too -- if you lose a limb, they replace it with a prosthetic. Supposedly, the technology we stole on that planet would make it possible to replace lost limbs, but that's apparently a ways off."

He blinked. "Aperture Science? Do you work for a research corporation?"

That sad puppy face could rend souls.

"I'll be with the rest of Medical, wherever we end up. In a battle like this, even someone who can hit things as well as I can isn't quite as useful as the people who can pilot giant robots and cause mile-long explosions." Which was part of his whole mild annoyance to begin with, not that he remembered thatat the moment.

"I think we'll all have some part to play. Applejack probably won't fight for the same reasons I can't, but I'm sure she'll find some way to help."

The Doctor watches Eva's face light up. He's always thought, in the brief time he's actually known her, that she always looks so much better than that. Normally she has a vaguely pinched expression on her face, as if it's her versus the world and she's even getting ready to square her shoulders at you. He smiles in return, hoping he can keep getting her to light up like that. That pinched look doesn't suit her at all.

"Oh yes, very done," the Doctor fibs shamelessly. He waves her over. "So done in time it'll be like I was never there, that's how done I'll be! Now, this cake...maze. (Sounds like a marvelous maze! Cakes!). Are you sure it's safe against Ohm incursion?"

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"As valid as you choose for them to be, I expect. It certainly marked a change, however we look at it." He grinned. "Besides, it's fun to tease Celena about being a queen now."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's right, you're royalty as well as a wizard," Signum says, remembering something the elf had said in their past conversations. "Which would help explain why you meet an intelligent dragon's standards, I suppose."

'Real' dragons, to Signum, might be just loyal, crafty animals, but after running into both Bight and Celena, she had mentally re-aligned the definition to be something closer to the antagonists of the Earth novels she'd read along with Hayate as a child, or the protagonists of neighboring nations' creation myths. Both seemed accustomed to a certain amount of power and material means.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He smirked, slowly, though it wasn't even directed at Signum; his gaze had drifted off to nothing.

"I have no idea why or how I meet her standards, honestly. She's so sincerely amazing in every way... if I was a slightly less-secure person, I'd be intimidated away, instead of just resolved to meet the challenge of being anywhere close to her equal."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's probably why she cares for you. It's why I like you, anyway," Signum admits. Then she hits Aibghalien on the shoulder.

"Now let's stop getting maudlin right before a battle. There's a Belkan joke about that and you really wouldn't like the punchline," she instructs. "I'll stick with your group unless something comes up. We're both good at rapid deployment so we should be ready to go and assist other teams."

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
She bites the corner of her lip at that. "As safe as it could be, probably. The people inside don't post a direct threat, though if the Ohm wanted to take hostages that or the pods would be the first places they'd turn."

But it does not good to worry about that yet. It does strike her as odd that the Doctor would claim to only need a moment of her time and yet still wants to know if GLaDOS is safe. "So what is it you'd like me to do?"

[identity profile] whining-unicorn.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't have healing skills either but I think I can help mend clothes in case anyone needs them. Who do I go to though?" Rarity was relieved her friends were not involved in any combat. She didn't want to see then hurt.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Aww. Now he was even MORE touched.

"I'm sure something will come up, but... that reminds me," he said, abruptly shifting topics. "I'd been researching this spell... a combination of common attribute-enhancing spells and weapon enchantments. Do you believe that it would be of any use if it was cast on a magical Device such as you and your friends have?"

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"ERWEITERUNG?" her necklace asks.

Signum ignores Laevatein for the moment. "Devices, especially ones as heavily customized as the ones the awake mages on this ship use, are finicky things," Signum comments. "They serve as both spell focus and enchanted weapon - even the ones that weren't originally designed to."

Has she mentioned lately that Nanoha is insane and her Device is worse?

"There might be some specific enhancements that overlap with the magical power boosts they already have built-in, or that are counteracted by our elemental affinities. Ice enhancements won't do much on Laevatein, speaking from experience," she says as an example. "I'd have to know the specifics of your spell to say one way or the other."

"We'll see what the announcement says, when it comes. After that, you just find your way to wherever you can do the most good."

Once again, he found himself wishing he knew what was a proper comforting gesture to give to a pony.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
Note to self, memorize Comprehend Languages more.

"It's a fusion of two magical effects," he said. "On the one hand, any creature may have its basic physical or abilities augmented by a spell. For example, if I were to cast Bull's Strength on you, you would become noticeably stronger. Now, where the manipulation of magical energies is concerned, a boost in strength of mind or force of will can often produced great dividends in the skill and power with which a magically-inclined person can manipulate arcane energy. Were you an ordinary sorcerer, I would simply cast Eagle's Splendor on you and call it good, but the way your magic has been described to me leads me to believe that amplifying your Device would produce superior results."

Breath.

"As for enchantment, the spell in question simply makes a weapon superior version of itself. This is the underlying enchantment for any weapon, which makes it lighter in the hand, quicker in the strike, sensibly sharper in the blade, and so on."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Magical technobabble before a mission? Now this, she was much more used to than talking about feelings.

"In other words, increasing mana focusing capacity or efficiency, and enhancing the blade itself," Signum summarizes out of habit. They could almost make a show of this. "The former should help, but it will take some doing to make Laevatein more efficient at cutting things. I don't doubt your skill if you wish to try, though."

The stored Device pings its approval of this statement.

[identity profile] for-magic.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
"That is quite possible, but I think I might be able to manage it. If not, the enhancement magic won't interfere with what already exists, it will simply have no effect. I also have a spell I think would be particularly suited to your skillset," he said with a grin. "I'll prepare them both for use at a moment when they can best serve to our advantage."

[identity profile] brustriese.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
"Even when we're the real thing, we magicians like to keep a card up our sleeves, don't we?" Signum asks rhetorically, amused.

"I'll try to find you when it's down to a critical moment, regardless," she promises.

It's relatively tactful, true, but there's still a bit of a look from Jamie just because it is such an obvious question. Once he's gotten that out of the way, however, he nods. "Aye, and my claymore, too."

It's at his waist, because even though he could put it in the sporran, if he's going to go into battle, he wants to have it at his side - morphers or no morphers. The sword's served him well in the past, and he's lucky he was able to find it and the bagpipes after the mess he made of the TARDIS.

There's still guilt over that, but he thinks the Doctor understands that what happened wasn't really his fault. The Scot just hopes that the Time Lord's forgiven him. Still, it almost makes him tempted to turn his next words into a question, not a statement - almost.

"Wish me luck, Doctor."
