Of malfunctioning portals, parks and dragons [Open]

Taking some time from other projects, Celena had once more brought down her Paired Gate device down to the park in an attempt to work on a number of issues of the operation of the device while in the Bleed. After all if a stable gate could be established, even for short periods of time, it could make for quick travel about the city and about the ship in general.

Thus in her usual draconic form she had set herself before the primary end of the gate device in the middle of a large clearing in the park, with the secondary portion of the device not a hundred feet away. After some time in pondering the problem she had decided to take a break from her work. Locking the device down she stretched herself out and padded away to wander the park for a short while before taking off to stretch her wings. Keeping her general flight path around the vicinity of the park itself.

[OOC: Feel free to run into her at any point, whether while she's working on the device, wandering the park or even flying around overhead!]

"How does it actually forge the connection with its counterpart? I can't see any catenary connections," Rhiow said. She squinted at the hyperstrings around the device. Several of them looked like they stretched off into the distance somewhere, and the crystals in the device had the hyperstrings coiled tightly around them like an electromagnet. "Something to do with the crystal structure?"

Rhiow was deeply in her element. Gates were her expertise, her specialty as a wizard. Finally, she had a project on board that excited her.

Rhiow's ear flicked a few times, rapidly. Anyone who knew her would know she was deep in thought, otherwise perfectly still with just her ear moving. She focused on the hyperstrings leading away from the device.

Then she reached out mentally to the Whisperer for some specifics on those crystals and how they resonated in subspace. The material was perfect for something like a Gate, it just wouldn't establish a connection here in the Bleed.

"How much power would it take to maintain the connection? Not open constantly, obviously, but I assume they only pair when powered. If they're always paired, just not always active, it would still require some power."

"Perhaps that's the problem," Rhiow said. "If the connection is closed in the Bleed, the temporal exceptions might keep it from opening. It would function fine in realspace, of course." Rhiow laid her ears back and began kneading her claws into the ground below her feet. "The Gates I'm used to working with are constantly powered by their central catenary, but the locus itself is offline until we program its destinational matrix. Having a constant power flow to maintain the connection would exclude the temporal... issues."

Temporal issues was Stacy in a nutshell. Rhiow thought she would get used to it, but it still surprised her.

"Like a catenary," Rhiow agreed. "You see, Gating on my world works like this."

Rhiow reached out to the nearest set of hyperstrings and pulled. A diagram of graceful Speech-characters began to spread out across the ground between her and Celena. It looked like a tree, with several branches stretching away from the central trunk. On the end of each branch was a circular diagram. "These are the gates," she said, pointing out the circles on the end of the branches. "They gain power from the catenary in the center - they're always connected to that. When we open a destination-" here she hooked her claws into a thick braid of gold and pulled it off the trunk. Its ends were anchored to two of the gate-structures in the tree, and as she pulled the strand unraveled from the rest of the tree until it stretched taught between the gates. "-we pull a connection from the catenary to bridge the gap. Do you think something similar might work with your device?"

(OOC: Delay? I'm slower than molasses these days. Sorry!)
