He really needed to propose the Magic Department move to the Tower of High Sorcery. It really made a lot more sense, didn't it?

Oh well.

An illusory sign out front said "Welcome New Applicants", along with a magic mouth that welcomed them and gave brief instructions to the office he had reluctantly claimed after deciding that no one would ever manage to properly find their way to his actual wizard's lab. Thus, behind a desk, he sat scribing a scroll and awaiting potential new members to the department's ranks.

"Hmm. And it seems that in this conflict, at least, spells that do not have immediate combat applications would be rather valuable. I'd be interested to know what other schools of magic are represented here."

Soren nodded. "I can demonstrate some attack magic for you, if you've a suitable target. And an area that doesn't contain anything you don't want destroyed. The demonstration of healing magic, however, will require someone who is actually injured."

"A great deal of collateral damage inherent to your spells, I take it? Primarily evocations affecting a wide area?" A guess, of course. He picked up his quill absently, spinning it through his fingers as his brain raced. "Do you perform any summonings, especially across planar boundaries? Is your healing in any way connected to the divine, either in the abstract or concretely?"

"It depends on the spell, actually -- the more powerful the magic, the more likely it is it will destroy something in the surrounding area." He motioned to Aibghalien's scroll. "I merely thought it would be best not to disturb your things, should you be in the middle of something delicate."

"No summonings, and if you want divine healing, you'd be best off asking a cleric or priest. They regularly call on a goddess to do their work, though I can use much the same spells, and I've never had to do the same." Actually, now they knew who Ashera was, he doubted she'd been the one answering their prayers, anyway. "Unless, I suppose, you call the spirits divine."

"They are closer to being classed with the divine than the arcane," he said. "Are you certain you have access to the magic here, or are you only able to tell on an attempt to cast it?"

"I've actually already attempted to cast one or two spells here already." After all, it wouldn't do to be caught unawares. "In terms of efficacy, accuracy, and speed, I've noticed no ill effect on my magical ability from the... mucus chamber."

"Excellent. That's definitely good to know." And curious, but if he'd learned one thing aboard the ship, it's that he had more mysteries than he could possibly solve in a lifetime -- and he was immortal. "Well, welcome aboard the ship and to the Magic Department!"

Soren gave Aibghalien a little bow. "Thank you. I look forward to working with all of you."

"If you need a workspace, please feel free to set one up here in the Temple if you want. Other than that, for large-scale destructive magics I'd recommend the sensorium if at all possible; it is capable of withstanding nigh unto anything I've been able to test on it."

He rose and returned the bow, razor-sharp and quite formal.
