Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
His reach isn't as far as Zouichi's, but he's just close enough that his fingertips scrape the bill during a well-timed flail, sending it tumbling to the ground.
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
Zouichi looks unconscious, maybe even dead considering he's not breathing. His eyes are closed.
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
He looks for a pulse. Did he just kill Zou? Short-circuit his brain? How do you check for life in a synthetic human? It's not like they breathe. Not for the first time, he wishes Zouichi hadn't locked his medical file. "Come on, come on, wake up."
He lifts Zouichi's head up, looking for a wound, a burn, something that would explain the sudden collapse. Nothing. He lightly slaps Zouichi on the face, "come on, man, wake up." He tries to pry his eyes open but doesn't succeed.
Taking a hard swallow and trying not to panic and assume the worst, he digs through his med kit and pulls out a syringe and a small vial. Adrenalin, just a small shot, might not even affect Zou with his superior systems. "Zou, if you're alive, don't you dare choke me again for doing this."
He fills the syringe, taps the bubbles out, and jams it into Zouichi's thigh.
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"Where am I? Was I out? And couldn't you wait a couple minutes before you start stabbing me with syringes?"
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
He rubs his throat, zips up his pack and stands up, offering Zou a hand even though he doubts he needs it. He glances over to the syringe in the pile of rubble. "By the way, that's littering."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
What had he been doing till now, anyway? And why was he dressed in this (admittedly rather stylish) outfit? As he tried to remember, the memories began trickling back to him -- dimly, as though from a half-forgotten dream.
"I was... we were on the planet, then... the message. And then I was..."
Oh, hold on, he had kind of tried to choke Howard, hasn't he?
"Uh... sorry about that last part."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
He's surprised Zouichi takes his hand at all, actually. That must have been more of a trip for Zouichi than he's used to. He guesses he can't really hold the choking thing against Zou.
"You've been out of it for about a day now. You want the long story or the short story? Also, do not put that hat on."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"I... remember what happened, vaguely. There was a lot of music. And arguing. And a mechanical spider." He pauses. "...did you mean all those things you said?"
Actually, Zouichi was just looking at that hat. It was a rather stylish hat. Why not... put it on? "The hat? Why, what's wrong with it?"
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"No, no, no, don't you dare. That's your brain-melting hat." He grabs the hat off the ground and flings it as far as he can. Unfortunately, due to the fact that they're still in a maze, it just hits a wall about ten feet away and flops limply to the ground. Much less impressively than he hoped. "Just don't put that on, alright? Remember, you were a sad robot."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"...And I also care what happens to you. I hope you know that."
To Zouichi, calling someone a friend is to risk injury at their hands. An inextricable part of it. You can't call someone close to you and still protect yourself from them.
But for now... the hat.
Yes. The hat. He strides toward where it has fallen, lifting it, fingering the winged metal pin...
Zouichi crushes the pin easily in one hand, plucking it off of the fabric and tossing it aside. Then he puts the cap back on. "Let's head back to the others, shall we?"
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
Then, sliding back into his usual detached sarcasm, he adds, "because I'm so likable!" and follows Zouichi's long strides down to the hat, taking a defensive step back as Zouichi puts the hat back on. But Zou seems to stay normal, so after a moment of watching and observing, Howard nods and continues after Zouichi.

Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"Before I came here, I met many humans, but in the end, it never really mattered if I liked them or not. It didn't matter if they lied to me, or tried to kill me, or tried to kill each other -- if they weren't a combatant or an obstacle, it was my job to save them.
"And because they knew I'd defend them whether I liked them or not, they didn't much care what I thought of them, either. So... I guess you could say neither of us really cared about the other."
"But I do care about you. I want you to stick around, and meet people you can trust. I want you to understand that it doesn't always have to be like the FAYZ."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
Zou cares, and it surprises Howard to realize that he often doesn't expect Zou to. Why would he? His parents may have cared, but not enough to stick around when the FAYZ's temptation rolled through town. Orc didn't, and he did everything for Orc, and Howard certainly hasn't given that same amount of devotion to Zouichi.
No, theirs is a friendship born from something else. Something different, hard to trace the lineage of or put a name on.
All the same, as good as it feels to not be alone, it hurts knowing that yet another person wants to change him, wants him to recover from what he and everyone else in the FAYZ went through. He's fine. Being naive and trusting isn't something he aspires to, and that's what he sees people telling him to be.
"Zou, I have to tell you something."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
He doesn't know how much of it Zouichi did attribute to the FAYZ, but it's better to get it out now than to let Zouichi find out later. He keeps staring at the floor, expecting that if he looks up he'll see either Zouichi's back or that look of disappointment, of expectations unmet. And he'll go back to being friendless.
He could learn to live with solitude.
"Just thought you should know."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"You think the only reason I'm around is because I can blame everything you did on the FAYZ? Honestly. Give me some credit."
He pauses. "...but thank you for telling me anyway."
Re: THE HEART OF ARTIFICE (Zouichi, relevant rescue team)
"Oh, you're still here?" he says, trying to sound like it didn't matter. "I guess we've got some Death Ray to unplug, right? Better get on that."
