A strange and mystical clock shop...

Down one of the back alleyways, one might stumble across a small sidewalk market full of peculiar shops. To one side was a store selling hub caps, to the other was a man who'd try to convince you that his potions would bring you eternal youth, really.

But in the middle, was a clock shop. It's collection of clocks in stock was peculiar, made of strange materials and working in odd ways (and if you wanted a cuckoo clock, here you could get one with a real cuckoo). But by far the most striking clock was the one that was draped across one of the back tables. The fact that it could drape at all was a big hint to the clock's strangeness. It looked like a giant, metre-wide clock face that had an unfortunate accident with a Bunsen burner and gone all floppy as a result, like it was melting. And yet, the clock still ticked.

The merchant spoke. "Do you want to see something strange and mystical?"

[[ooc: Alright, this is the post that kicks off the Melting Clock! The clock store Merchant here is Jeepers/Peepers, who's being NPC'd by Allen. Since people other than the Melting Clock guys might want to tag Jeepers/Peepers, please mention in your subject line whether your character is to be affected by the clock or not, so Allen knows who to set the chime off at!

Important Note! If your character is to be affected, make sure that you've signed up, guys. If you haven't filled out the form, you haven't signed up]]

Another Important Note: No more new threads please! If you really really want to thread this out, please ask Allen directly if he's able to. Otherwise, just handwave them coming to the shop.

In the hands of his minion, the book had set off to explore some of the lesser-trod places of this massive shrine to mercantilism. He figured nothing he'd be interested in would be out in public -- some process to restore his body and his Netherworld would be well-hidden, if it even existed.

He spent an enjoyable few minutes berating the potion merchant about how he was already immortal because he was strong enough to kick Death's ass, then he'd gotten distracted by the idea of buying a bigass clock for his fortress back in the City. So in the minion went.

"Strange and mystical, huh?" Zetta said. Why not? He was feeling magnanimous today. "Sure, I'm game."

"Uh, isn't it here because this is a clock shop, and it's a clock?"

Zetta may not be the swiftest roadrunnerus overlordus the coyote ever chased, but even he could spot the flaw in that statement.

Crispin Freeman's Zetta's voice was simply too awesome for anyone else's to sway him. But luckily, his brain didn't have that same problem.

"Sounds interesting. Fire it up and let's see if it lives up to your hype."

"Either that's incredibly obviously ominous or it was made in Latveria," Zetta said, peering at the clock. "Nice bass for something that's as soggy as Pram's take on omelets, though. So what's--"

He turned. Then saw the shopkeeper had on earmuffs. "Uh."

Those are very nice hub caps, by the way. And the youth potions probably wouldn't do the Doctor much good, so that leaves him Hub Caps and Clocks as interesting options.

It's a difficult choice. Good thing there’s plenty of time on shore leave, he supposes, because he'd like to take a look at those hub caps later. One of them looked like something he could quite possibly use as a spare part to coax the TARDIS back in working order.

The Doctor dives into the clock shop, which certainly has one of those strange and mystical feelings one has to cultivate very well. You really have to dive into these sorts of things, sometimes because of the sheer amount of clutter to jump over and mostly because if you're going anywhere, you might as well take it head first, whether it's hub caps or alien cross-dimensional clocks: not that it's a literal dive. This time. He's already peering around with interest, wishing he could feed the cuckoo and realizing he probably should start carrying more bird seed around in his pockets for times like this. The Doctor winds his way around the clock shop, appreciating that cultivated atmosphere of strangeness because it enhances the browsing experience.

Eventually he finds himself toward the back, investigating a truly fascinating piece of work. The melted clock looks like something old Dahl would’ve come up with and maybe, just maybe, he might’ve had some kind of unconscious sort of cross-dimensional syncing with this. Usually you might see it across planets, complete accidents arriving at the same conclusion, but he’s never seen it quite on this scale. The Doctor flashes the psychic paper at the shop-keeper.

“Stuff Inspector and, incidentally, also bit of a Clock Inspector as well,” the Doctor says.

"Are you really still pulling that old trick? I suppose some things never change."

Don't look now, but there's a familiar figure behind you, Doctor. Dressed in that oh-so-tight-fitting plantsuit and a pair of shades, River Song was currently beaming a bright, but rather predatory grin at him. That's right. His future wife has officially caught up with him. Did he really think he could get away with having this sort of grand adventure without River Song to taunt, tease, and bewilder him? Silly, daft old man.

"Hullo, sweetie."

Now, her attention shifts towards the melted looking clock. She wondered, idily, what was wrong with it? Who would want to sell off a melted clock and who would want to buy one, for that matter? Unless it had some sort of strange, mystical power.

"How much for that one?"

Pointing, of course, at the melted clock.

If anyone's better at sneaking and snooping than him, it's apparently River Song. The Doctor's shoulders jump at the voice behind him and he whirls and...doesn't quite gape at her because he's certainly not going to give her the pleasure, but he does stare.

To his credit, he doesn’t stutter, trying instead to recover and react like of course River would be here. It’s not the best recovery he’s ever made, the equivalent of a verbal stumble.

“Didn’t expect to see you here, River. Popping in for a visit?” Without missing a beat, the Doctor turns toward the shop keep, gesturing at River. “My…assistant, yes. Lovely woman, great taste, good eye for faulty merchandise.”

With Amy, Rory or Jamie he would expect them to simply go along with it, but with River, well. Calling her a wild card is a serious understatement, the Doctor hoping he can talk so quickly he doesn’t leave the merchant enough time to start picking out the little white lies, such as the fact he’s not officially licensed as a Stuff Inspector (he could’ve, but the paper test was mind-bogglingly boring, so he never bothered). The Doctor flips his psychic paper closed, stuffing it in his breast pocket as River joins him and just like Jamie’s sense of paradox is distracting, so is that odd charge in the air when River’s in the room. He doesn’t quite know how to explain it. Sheer force of presence, he supposes.

Woman does have a habit of getting her way. He hasn’t figured out exactly how she does it.

“Oh, no no no, we’d like a look at that exact one,” the Doctor clasps his hands briskly together. River’s right. It is the most interesting looking clock in the shop. "Routine inspection, that sort of thing."

River doesn't so much as blink when the Doctor announces her as his 'assistant'. It's like she's done this a hundred times over, going with that mad man's lead often meant the different between life and death for everyone involved. Too bad this was one of those days when she didn't feel like playing along. "River Song. More like his wife then his assistant. Someone has to keep him in line, right darling?"

She steps in closer, her hand gently clasping his arm. Squeezing ever-so-slightly to emphasize what his response to her question should be. Yes, she's having a very good time here, as if she were trying to see how high she could make this young-looking-Doctor's voice rise. However, her eye was keenly on the prize at hand. "Don't you think it has a sort of...Salvador Dali '"The Persistence of Memory quality to it, sweetie?"

With her hand still on his arm, her voice honey sweet, she leans in slightly to peer at the melted clock, as if examining it for signs of anything dangerous or unusual. "Is that so? Well, perhaps you could enlighten us as to the background of this item? Or help us to get in touch with your chief inspector? I'm very interested in this clock. Don't you think it would look lovely hung over our bedroom wall, darling? It would have to be properly inspected first, of course."

This wasn't really the store Signum had intended to walk into when Hayate suggested they split up. It was more a place she'd stumbled upon in between grocery shopping and picking up materials for Rein, and she still wasn't sure why she'd bothered coming in besides a vagary of crowd physics. She's not terribly impressed with the merchant, either, being something strange and mystical herself.

"It would have to be fairly unique to surprise me at this point..." she comments, intending it as a polite brush-off.

Affected, so feel free to drag him in against his will

[identity profile] darknight-ren.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ren's plan was to buy food and tea for Atori, along with some other necessities. He'd already picked up a couple of things after haggling intensely--and given his attitude, it hadn't been pleasant for anyone involved, though at least he hadn't gotten into any fights...yet. For the most part, he expected his housemates to do fine on their own, but if he knew anything about Phillip, he knew the younger Rider would probably spend his entire wallet on books and completely fail to buy any food.

And that was how Ren ended up here, trying to find his way to the food markets. He tolerated the merchant jumping out at him, but only because he needed directions.

"Actually, I'm trying to find my way," he answered.

Ren wasn't the kind of person who went along with anything easily. Giving Peepers a flat look, he said, "You're wasting my time. I'm just looking for the food markets. If you can't tell me anything, I'm gone."

You're going to have to try a little harder than that. This is a tough one to crack.

Ren sighed and silently damned everyone who'd gotten him to care about others. The list of people he was cursing was unnervingly long for his taste.

"Fine," he agreed. And at least a few minutes of his time was less than he'd be paying during the rest of his stay here.

"Bet that's hell when the hour hits," Zetta said, totally buying it -- or just not caring at all.

Okay, that's interesting from a mechanical standpoint, at least. Signum regards the clock curiously, wondering what magic was keeping it working. Or why anyone would bother.

"A unique chime? That's not something you hear about too often. I suppose, sure," Signum says back. Really, she's not interested in buying anything from this shop, but this seemed like somewhat more wholesome entertainment than a lot of what was being sold and promoted in this town.

"Buddy, it seems like I can't get away from the strange and mystical," Dean remarked after he had poked his head in the shop. He was still thinking of things to pick up for Kaylee, Sam, Tom, and the house. Something for Bobby too, and maybe something for Cas if he comes back. Still something about this place pinged on his weird-o-meter so he figured to better check it out further.

Ever the Hunter, even in space.
