Date Night [Closed]

Dean blew some air out through his teeth, and was pacing a little outside the Sensoriums. He fidgeted with his hands, and kept glancing down the hallways nearby. He got his tapes back, but everybody's been harping on him lately. They just didn't get it. This was his freaking job, hell, he's a member of Security, and now with Mei Xing repodded, the situation with Strike Team fell squarely into his lap. Which meant some new testing and try outs soon that he'd have to supervise. And Samus repodded which means shake ups in Security too. People just needed to back off because guess what, he's responsible. Which means he should have been more on guard about that damn Darksoul. He knew Daimon, who seemed to have things under control, but he should have remembered the lesson with Ruby. Never trust anything demon related.

Damn he really did need a break. He paced some more and hope Kaylee would show up soon.

The small giggle at Dean's new clothing couldn't be helped. Bad enough he was stubborn as Mal sometimes, now he was dressing like him too.

"Well, this particular joint's a space station, trade post 'tween planets. There're quite a few of 'em around the system. This one's a bit farther out than most, easier to sneak under Alliance eyeballs." In other words, easier for thievery and smuggling.

Well, Kaylee wasn't about to complain about the pants, that was for certain. She just flashed him a nice, perfectly innocent grin and started tugging him through the crowd of people.

"'Course we do," she replied, pointing toward one of the off-shooting hallways. "Place's big enough to be it's own little city, so it's got plenty of nice little back alleys for gamblin' and the like. Wouldn't suggest 'em, though. Tend to cheat..."

Kaylee made sure not to get too ahead of him, and allowed time for Dean to take everything in. It wasn't like they were in any hurry.

"Sometimes it causes a bit of a ruckus, though, 'n the way we work...like to avoid unnecessary fights if we can." Well, unless you were Mal on U-Day, and then they got into every fight he could get them into.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-01-31 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee just shook her head. "Any we ain't even tryin' right now, so there's no need for worryin' over gettin' caught." They had other plans for the day.

"Still dinner 'n a movie," she laughed. "More if you're on one of the Core planets, though. As you move further out it turns to things like dancin'." It was a lot like pre-movie Earth-That-Was on some of the Border planets, in some ways.

"Mm, one we've got Jayne with us, too."

Kaylee led Dean through the crowd and off toward what appeared to be an elevator. "This one's whatever we want it to be." She pointed at the panel on the wall, where there was a touchscreen directory of the station. "Just gotta pick our places."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
"This's the market, yeah. We'll end up back here if we want to eat at all, so not a problem in savin' it for later."

Thankfully, they're in the Sensoriums and not on the actual space station, so getting them down into the docking area isn't so hard. It isn't a terribly exciting place, as can be seen when the elevator doors open and they're greeted with a tube of people bustling between ships, but the spare parts and equipment for the ships are worth a small look.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Kaylee found herself quickly distracted in looking over one of the tablets nearby, full up with supply orders and inventory.

"You lose count," she admitted. "I know more ships than I could name, honestly. Depends on where you buy, what you're lookin' for. Some're transport, others are a little...harder. Half of what you hear about most days don't even count the discontinued lines or what the Alliance's got hidin'."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
"More or less. Serenity's from a discontinued series herself. Stopped makin' Aught-Three Fireflies a few years back. Cap'n found her in some back-planet used ship lot. Lucky find..."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-01 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I certainly don't think I'd've jumped on with the Cap'n if he hadn't had Serenity. Apparently he'd been offered a real scrap heap right before he spotted her..." Kaylee shook her head. "Not that Serenity was in the best of condition from the start, but there ain't nothin' out there flies like a Firefly."

"A lot of TLC. Wash did a perdy nice job of fixin' most of her, but the mechanic they had before me weren't the best at anythin'..."

Actually, bad train of thought for a date. The last thing she really wanted to bring up was Bester. She shrugged. "Probly part of the reason I got hired of so quick."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-02 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Had enough of a clue 'bout oil changes..." A mental image of Wash threatening anyone was more than enough to block any mostly-polite thoughts about Bester's mechanical prowess out completely. "Hope he didn't beat on you too bad?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"And he weren't threatenin' at all, I'll bet. Ain't a scary bone in his body."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-03 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
"He is. One'a the best." She couldn't help but be proud of a guy like Wash. Most people on Stacy could only hope to be half the man he was, so far as Kaylee was concerned.

Kaylee pointed Dean toward one of the closer repair areas, describing some of the more curious looking parts as they went.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-04 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
There were some laser guns, but it definitely wasn't perfected technology yet. They were few and far between, and a lot less reliable than regular old guns and bullets.

"This is most normal for folk, yeah. The Central planets are more advanced, same with Alliance. You get there and it's all straight lines and white walls."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-05 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Mal would approve, that was for damn sure. Kaylee pulled a face and nodded in agreement.

"Alliance wouldn't know a decent ship if it crashed into their faces. Just 'cause it looks shiny don't mean it is, y'know?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-05 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
"Alliance is alright for some things. Not much, though." They were really good for nice things like restocking their supplies quickly so there was more to get at later. The things that weren't so great, though, were their experiments, their lack of help to Border and Rim planets, all the stuff that people outside the Central planets needed.

Bunch of chicken shits.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-05 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Salvagin', if nothin' else? Been more than one occasion where we've found perfectly good parts in their junkyards."

...alright, that's not so much exactly Alliance, but she was trying really hard to find something decent about them. Everybody had something nice about them somewhere.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Depends on what kinda parts you're lookin' for. Some of 'em are might expensive normally."

Outer worlds. Kaylee pointed Dean to another nearby touchscreen, and took a minute to pull up a map of the system. "Depends on which one you go to. Some're minin' planets, farmin', others lean toward...makin' mud." She tried not to laugh at that one. "Further out you go, though, less Alliance you got, which can be both good and bad, seein' as they got control over most med and food deliveries..."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Not even jokin'. Clay's gotta come from somewhere, yeah?"

It was a hell of a planet to visit, though. Stunk worse than being stuck on a ship with a herd of cattle for three weeks.

"Yeah, but the Alliance keeps a close eye on the production. Do on everythin'."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2011-02-09 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Dean wasn't the first to think it weird. Kaylee couldn't help but smile at the memory of Simon's first impression of the planet. Oh, city folk...

"No chips," Kaylee promised, "but I don't know if I'd put it past 'em to start tryin'." It was bad enough they did experiments on little girls like River. Gorram bunch of purple-bellied húndàn.
