Ship Work [Open]

Skimmed down just her plantsuit and her hair tied in a ponytail and tucked into the collar, Reimi was laying on a platform that hovered under the nose of the Calnus. While she wasn’t the most incredible mechanic in the world, she knew how to repair her own ship. After all, it had gotten them out of a tight spot.

Adjusting the panel, she wiped her hands and picked up a data pad. The readout scrolled out in front of her and she stuck her tongue out in thought. “Mmm, needs a little more….”

Currently, she was trying to make sure that the auto-repair function was going to be ready for any situation. Picking up a spanner, she adjusted the bolt one last time and entered some code into the machine.

So involved in her work, she didn’t notice that anyone could just come up and talk to her at any given time.

Zetta simply sighed. "You ever have a day just not go quite right?

"...Then again, you're here, aren't you? My trip was a little... complicated."

"All the time," replied Reimi with a sigh as she moved over so that Zetta's minion could set him down or sit down or something. "I've got some time on my hands. What happened?"

Zetta's minion seemed (and was) tireless, able to carry the book pretty much indefinitely. Still, the book seemed to settle just a little. "This book is the Sacred Tome. It's the keystone to my Netherworld. The Ohm tampered with it. I had to confine my soul to it to save my life and the crumbling remnants of my world."

Zetta, as usual, failed to mention he'd set the damn book on fire himself. That's a trifling unimportant detail.

"Damn them and their trickery," Zetta snarled skywards. "They knew they couldn't handle the most badass freakin' Overlord in the cosmos in a fair fight! But they made one hell of a mistake leaving me alive! Even as a book, I'll crush them so flat it'll give two-dimensional planes body-image issues!"

"So is overlord just a title or is it a status of power?" inquired Reimi as she sat up, brushing locks of hair away from her face."

"Cause if you were pretty powerful before, this gives you just cause to increase it and gain a little more power when the time comes."

"An Overlord is the ruler of a Netherworld. Or at least one Netherworld. Some control more. So it's a title, but you have to be number one in your Netherworld to get it." Zetta grinned proudly. "I'm the strongest Overlord that ever was or will be already."

Then the book frowned. "But it's pretty surprising how much you can't do when you don't have things like limbs."

"I would imagine so," said Reimi as she picked up her data padd and tapped a few buttons on it to make sure that the recalibration was working just as she specified. "Power must be nice, the ability to change things."

"For someone who was just working on a giant ship, you sound a little frustrated," Zetta said. "Something more beyond 'I'm stuck on a ship in the middle of space with the multiverse collapsing around me'?"

"Just finding flaws everywhere, and flaws that seem to make sense in context," grumbled Reimi as she reset another pre-loaded sequence. "It's one of those weird things I keep finding in my abilities and things from home."

"You can't say that and expect me to not ask about these abilities, you know," Zetta said, as the tome settled down with a sort of 'listening patiently' air. "Especially since you seem to have your own ship. That's pretty badass."

"Well it's just..." Reimi sighed. "I keep finding inconsistencies. Like I'll learn abilities all of a sudden when I feel strong enough, or the timers on my ship are set for Repair Plus 10 minutes extra. Like it's designed for dramatic timing."

"....What's so unusual about that?" Zetta asked, with the naive innocence of someone used to leaning on the fourth wall.

"Well... it just points more to the fact that I existed as zeros and ones before I arrived here," said Reimi with a sigh. "I even feel stronger, like I gained a few levels or something."

"Zeroes and ones? You're... a hologram or something? Wait, aren't holograms that... that thing that isn't that?" He means analog, but technology is not his strong suit. "Uh, software program?"

"Video game character, heroine apparently." replied Reimi. "My game's still in the media library. It's a MMO called Eternal Sphere."

"Oh. Well, the ability stuff is pretty much par for the course, isn't it? Hell... you say it all like it's a bad thing." Again, Zetta is puzzled.

"Huh. I wonder if they have my game there." Not bloody likely, Zetta.

"Not for me it isn't. It's just a shocking reminder that I'm literally leveling up still." Reimi pouted, tapping her head with her finger. "You have a game too?"

"Yup. Zetta seems entirely at peace with the fact. Of course, he hadn't found it out abruptly one day, after all. "I've totally lost track of the name. It was something different in a couple places. If a personal opinion helps... don't worry about the levelling. It may take some grinding at times, but it's all worth it in the end."

"Well at least I know one person who's comfortable with the game-like stuff," said Reimi. "I think I'm on the verge of mastering this one technique I've been working on. But it's still slow going."

"Oh, my game's always been a little light on the ol' fourth wall." Zetta attempted to shrug, nearly fell over, and hurriedly righted himself with a glance at Reimi to make sure she hadn't noticed that. He was better at this when he had actual shoulders, honest. "Why's it bother you?

"I won't say I like the sensoriums, but if you take the safeties off, they're pretty good for training."

"Really? Stacy lets you do that?" inquired Reimi curiously. "Taking off the safeties I mean."

"Yeah, you just request an override." At least, so it had always been for the Overlord. Quite possibly the ship knew enough to realize that to the constructs he used, damage was essentially meaningless. But Zetta never gave any thought for that sort of thing.

He considered Reimi for a moment. "Hmm. So are you all pilot, or do you do fighting on your own, too?"

"Hmm maybe I could try it out sometime..." mused Reimi.

"Oh I do more than pilot. I fight with a bow and arrow and a few well placed kicks. I use chi to power most of my moves," she added.

"Oh hey, now we're talking." Zetta perked up a little at her description. "That's the sort of thing I get." Assuming she meant 'mana' when she said 'chi'. It all worked out the same in the end. "We needed some more ranged members in this fight. Excellent!

"...I should start a class in there," he mused to himself.

"You teach fighting?" inquired Reimi, looking the book over. The glassy-eyed minion looked like she could take care of herself but a book?

"How do you do that without um.... arms?"

"Not... I mean, I have an apprentice, but... Huh. Maybe I should." Zetta mused out loud as he rolled the thought about in his mind... then snapped his gaze right back to Reimi as her question finally broke through.

"Hey! Even as a book, I'm still the most badass freakin' Overlord in the cosmos!" He drew himself up proudly. "I have minions! Besides, I can use the sensoriums. Thousands of years of battle don't just pass by a guy without giving him SOME idea of how to set up a learning battle!

"And it's fine I don't have arms! If I did, no one here could handle me! I'd have crushed the Ohm the moment I found out what they were up to!"

Oh, you got him worked up, Reimi....
