"OW! That so totally hurts!" -- Charles Xavier

The battle against the Ohm raged on, and the casualties on the ground were mounting. Injured crew members got emergency treatment in the field, which largely amounted to patching them up so they wouldn't die sometime within the next fifteen minutes. After that, they were quickly picked up by shuttle and brought back to the ship, where they were sent to a medbay that was getting progressively more crowded.

The situation was growing increasingly dire, to the point that Stacy activated one of the AI's to help out.

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."

"No, no. I think Mr. Smiles has more patients to see to, so he'll be busy for a while," Nura says wryly, pulling her injured leg up onto the bed. She puts her hand on the vascular pad to keep it from sliding off. It hurts at first to touch it, but after twenty-two consecutive seconds, its a dull ache.

Katara giggled. "Sorry, I know the EMH is here to help, but when you hear criticism for a gift you have, it tends to make you a little bit cranky, you know? But I am glad to see him making you feel better."

She drew her knees to her chest with her hands. "So I guess you're feeling well enough for me to lecture you on leaving the battlefield when you're hurt!"

There was a teasing glint in her eye, but tempered by the motherly glare she was giving her new favorite friend.

"I can relate," Nura says. She remembers to way back when, when Querl was still calling her a 'precognitive flake'. It used to annoy her to no end, although, looking back on it, now, it is somewhat humorous.

Nura's smile turns a little tight-lipped when she hears what Katara says next. "I suppose so..." is her answer to the not-question, not really looking forward to two lectures all in one day.

"I'm glad," Katara said. "But really, these intellectual types think that people who have these powers have it for bragging rights and party tricks and magic! Just because you have the natural ability to help people doesn't make what you do any less important!"

But that being said, Katara gave her friend a serious look. "I know we just met, and I'm a kid, so you have no reason to take me seriously in a fight like that. I get why you wouldn't listen to me and stay and fight: you probably had to do this on your world too. But I have my own experience fighting Nura, and if someone who's hurt keep trying to fight, they could end up fatally taken out. I just...I really don't want you suffering from injuries I can't do anything about, okay?"

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Nura can see that Katara is bothered by what happened. It's plain to see in the girl's face and body language, that Katara was really worried about Nura. It softens Nura's resolve to be stubborn.

"Well you're right," she grudgingly admits. "I did fight a lot on my world, and at a young age. And I guess that my headstrong disposition doesn't do much when you're given an order, and are too stubborn to accept it. On my world, that was what the basis of my team was: rebellion. So used to going against orders that we often forgot our place. I'm sorry that I forgot mine when you were only concerned about my well being."

None of that would have been said if she was a year younger. It would have been outright denial and fighting. But Nura's personality is more tempered by her on the Spirit Plane. Less fiery hotheadedness, and more cool thinking.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She shook her head. "I'm not used to taking the lead like that. To be honest, it was really scary to be giving orders in the first place. Most of the time, I'm usually just helping in the fight. You are very strong, and you were definitely helpful, but when I saw you limping onto the field and hurting, I was scared. So I wanted to make sure that you didn't get hurt, that's all."

She sighed. "I'm glad you're okay. Who was finally able to get you out?"

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Nura jerks a thumb emphatically to the left in Jeka's general direction with a sour face as if she'd bitten into a few too many lemons. It can be described gently as 'ugh'. "Getting me out isn't really the term that I'd use, to say..."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh really?" Katara looked a little amused here at Nura's pouty face.

"Something tells me that it wasn't the best way to get you out, was it?"

[identity profile] hatngartersnake.livejournal.com 2010-07-02 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"She's just annoyed that my skills include enough extraction techniques that when she tries to ignore me, I can pick her up and carry her off the field." Jeka said from where she was ostensibly focused on working her omnicomm one-handed. It wasn't as if she was so far away that she couldn't hear their conversation, though.

[identity profile] crysteel-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
"You didn't have to carry me off over your shoulder as if I was some disobedient child," Nura says, pride wounded.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Katara shook her head. "You're a friend of mine, Nura, so I won't laugh. But come on: its a little funny now that we're all alive and recovering."

She thought so anyway. "I'm glad you're okay."

[identity profile] crysteel-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Nura sighs, knowing that she can't begrudge Jeka much for doing her duty as a Legionnaire, and can't be annoyed with Katara for finding what happened funny. Because it really is something humorous...just not all that humorous to her.

"I'm glad you're OK as well," she softly says. "Did everyone else get out alright?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara decided that if she truly wanted to remain Nura's friend, she would promptly forget about that little tidbit if information. She could tease her about it later when it wasn's still so fresh in mind.

"Yeah," Katara said. "I've already seen Negi and Sasami, although I have to go find Giles. Haven't seen him yet. So far, everyone was all right."

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's good," Nura says with a genuine smile and a nod. "Did the flight ring help in the long run?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-03 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh yes," Katara said. "With the help of that, Toph and Negi's earlier weakening, we were able to take the worm out. That was actually where I got most of my bruises, to be honest. The rest were from the fire."

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
"You're a trouper, Katara." Nura says with a coy wink and laugh. "Later on, you have to show me your bending in a non-fighting-for-our-young-lives atmosphere." Even when Katara had been using it to down Grunt after Grunt and slash at the Devourer Worm, it had been definitely something to see.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
She shook her head. "I just did what I could to help, that's all. It was your help that was able to help me take down that worm with your flight ring. But if you really want to see me bending, I'd be happy to show you once you're better. But while we're on that, I'd like to see YOU in action too. I bet you can fly way better than I can."

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
"You have a deal, little lady," Nura says with a laugh, reaching up to push back her long locks. Already plans are being put down in her mind.

And on a lighter note, her lips are quirk at the corners in a most devious smile. "Now, tell me more about these not nice men who think your innate talent is a party trick. I think I've found my first round of pantsing victims..."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 12:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara was glad to see that Nura was actually in high spirits: she'd hoped the injuries wouldn't have dampened her otherwise quirky personality.

"Oh, did I ever say that? I don't know if that was ever the case! People call it magic, but I don't think they mean the kind of magic with illusions and all of that. I think they think its really magic, like the kind Negi and Luna have to practice."

[identity profile] foreseen-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nura isn't fooled. "Oh please, Katara. When you said 'intellectual types', it sounded like ice was moving in. I'm guessing they did more than just incorrectly assume your bending stems from magic..."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
She laughed. "I could make you a list of people who see what I can do and call it magic! No, the last time I was insulted was probably when Brainy called my culture barbaric. He meant that as far as other countries were concerned I was pretty backward, but I was really angry when he said it at the time."

She glared. "But if there was anyone that really gets me upset, its that PILOT girl, Asuka."

[identity profile] crysteel-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Nura's eyes light-up. "Oh, well Brainy of course would have to fall not far from the Brainiac tree on personality." She laughs. "I don't think he meant you any harm...he might have just put that foot of his way in his mouth without realizing it." She knows what she's talking about. "I bet he's a lot like my husband, in that way."

She cocks her head to the side, hair sliding over her shoulder. "I'm guessing by lu of your tone, Asuka really gets under your skin."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
"I got over it after awhile. Just because my world was lacking the technological advancements of places doesn't make it barbaric. For all I know, staying a certain way might have actually been a good thing? But why would your husband be like that?"

Here, Katara twitched a little. "Asuka's fine...if you like arrogant, stuck up little know it alls who make more of their accomplishments than needed to make themselves feel better!"

[identity profile] crysteel-future.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nura tosses her hair over her shoulder with the sweep of a hand. "Because Brainy's my husband's counterpart. That's why."

Katara's tone went far over MIFFED and right to ZIZZED BEYOND ALL REASON. And Katara's a pretty nice young girl, so to be in a tiff with her must mean nothing good about the tiffee.

"I see. From the way you describe her, she doesn't sound like my cup of tea either."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-07-05 12:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Counterpart?" Well that was something she didn't get. How could you have a counterpart of someone who already existed? There was still so many things about this ship that Katara was trying to understand, it was typical something new would sprout up!

"YOU can like her if you want," Katara said. "Nothing's stopping you. I've tried to be nice to her about a million times, and they all end up with her calling me a 'bitch' or me freezing her in place somewhere. She can do whatever she wants. I'm not going to continue wasting time being angry at someone like her. That lowers my maturity, to stay mad at someone who loves to get on my nerves in the first place."
