Free Hugs, anyone~?

Too much doom and gloom on the ship? Easily fixed, if you ask this mechanic.

There is a table in the mess hall, carefully set up just inside one of the doors, with a small sign on top reading, "Free Hugs!" Next to the sign, looking as smiley as she possibly can, sits Kaylee, ready to hug anyone and everyone who walks through the door.

Non-huggers beware, even you are in danger of some cheering up today.

"Not all the time. Some people're afraid to ask, or to make the first move on it. Some of 'em don't even realize they want one 'til they get one." Ah, Kaylee logic. Gotta love it.

Kaylee logic confuses Adrastos terribly. "Why would someone not realize that they desired something? Why would that change if they received it? Why would they not say that they wanted it? Are people not vocal about their desires?" Kaylee may be the nicest, most social person Adrastos has ever met. He finds her baffling.

Whoa, whoa, one question at a time there. "Sometimes folks just don't know exactly what they're wantin', and only realize it 'til after they've gotten it. A good portion of people, 'specially around here, don't exactly enjoy talkin' about their feelin's, so they won't always mention that they're needin' a bit of comfort."

Adrastos doesn't know how to only ask one question at a time. "Why would people not realize what they desired? And that still does not explain why they would realize once they had received it. And if people will not request a hug, why would they accept one when offered?"

Kaylee can see that. Oh boy. "I can't rightly say why. There're just...don't you ever feel restless, and you don't know why you'd ever have a reason for being restless at that particular moment in time, but you are anyways?" No, probably not. "People just don't always know what they want until they get it. They're funny that way. As for hugs, people ain't always sure you'll accept a hug if they ask for one, so they don't want to make the first move and look like a ben dan. There'll be plenty of people who pass me up today, but there're plenty more still who've been lookin' for a good hug."

"No, I do not. Should I?" Adrastos still didn't seem to understand. "That is simply a reiteration of what you had said before. It does not explain it. And why are people 'looking for a good hug'? Why would you offer them?"

"Because that's all there is to it." Really, that was it. This one, though, reminds her a little bit of Spock. Everything's gotta have some strange logical reasoning. "No need to be rude, but I take it you ain't been around people much, hm?"

"There is always a reason." That's what Adrastos's father had taught him, and he was sticking to it.

Adrastos might have no understanding of when he was being rude, but he did know enough to know that it was a bad thing. "It was not my intention. You are correct." The tactful way of putting Adrastos's life before the FBI was that he'd had a "sheltered childhood". But Adrastos... didn't know that term and wouldn't apply it to his life if he did.

"Ah, I meant, I wasn't meanin' to be rude. And now I mean it doubly." Way to knock that one out of the park, Kaylee. "You'll have plenty of time to get to knowin' quite a few folks on the ship now, I'd imagine. That'll help more'n you might think it will."

"How were you being rude?" Adrastos... didn't notice. Asking personal questions is normal for him. He didn't try to address the other part; there were way too many issues that would get caught up in a response to that, none of which he was self-aware enough to articulate.

"When I was guessin' that you hadn't been around folks all that much..." She trails off a bit awkwardly.

"It was a reasonable question." Or at least, it was in Adrastos's mind. It was far more reasonable than some of the questions he'd asked others just in the time he'd been awake on the ship.

"Still, not somethin' I normally ask folks right off." Kaylee offers out a hand. The least she can do is put some semblance of politeness back into the conversation. "Kaylee Frye."

Oh. This again. Adrastos understood why people did this, but it had not gotten any easier to explain since he met Stephen. "I am Adrastos," he said. He didn't offer his hand.

Right, not everybody shook hands. Kaylee just keeps on smiling, pulling her hand back to shove it in her pocket. "Nice to meet you then, Adrastos."

And not everyone could. But at least he didn't have to deal with the issues of being an AI. He remembered what he was supposed to say to that. "It is nice to meet you as well, Kaylee."

Yeah, there's that too. "So are you one of our newest pod-pops, or have I just missed seein' ya around before? I do spend a lot of my time down in Engineerin', so it's possible..."

"I am... newly awakened." Adrastos didn't mention that he hadn't gone through the pod-pop like everyone else. He wasn't nearly as forthcoming with information as he expected everyone else to be. "You are an engineer?"

"Good to be out of the slime, ain't it?" Not that the plant suits are much better. "'M a mechanic more'n an engineer, but yeah."

"I did not go through that." He said it before he could consider what he was saying. "What do you work on?"

"You didn't?" Kaylee cocks her head to one side. "How'd you manage that one?" Some folks are just lucky, maybe.

"Work on space ships, mostly. Engines and the like. Back home I worked with my daddy in his shop, and got hired later on as sole mechanic of a transport ship by the name of Serenity."

"I woke up. I did not go through the pod-pop." Adrastos had simply found himself activated after an unknown period of time dormant. "How long have you been here?

"What is there to work on on this ship?"

"It's hard to say, really. Lose track of time on a boat like this, but it's gotta be nearin' six months, if not past that." A longer time than she thought she'd be here, at least.

"There're plenty of things. Repairs, keepin' Stacy in good condition, fixin' her up after some of the problems we've had in the past. The ships down in the cargo bay need lookin' after, too."

"You awakened normally?" Adrastos knew the answer; everyone went through the pod-pops, it seemed, unless they were an AI like him.

"What problems have there been?"

"Lucky as I am? Sure did." Not her favorite experience on Stacy either.

"Nightmare King was the most recent. Got to the point where the nightmares we were havin' took actual shape on the ship, and that didn't help in keepin' the ship straightened out at all, especially down in the city. There've been others, too, but our main problem starters were the pirates that attacked Stacy 'fore we were awake. Killed her original crew, damaged her up pretty good. Got our work cut out for us, there--we're still tryin' to figure out what's wrong in some places."

Ah, if that's the case, she'll loop him with Simon lol.

Oh my God there's a Simon here. O_O I'm not sure if Adrastos should meet him or stay far, far away.

I need more 'seriously confused' icons. The one isn't cutting it. :/

I feel that way with smile-icons for Kaylee, and they already make up half her icons...

Kaylee ALWAYS needs more smile icons. :D

My thoughs exactly. Eat up icon space like nothing else, though. XD

Because Kaylee smiles more than anything. So she needs more smile icons. See the cycle? XD

The funniest part of that? She only smiles twice in the entire BDM.

Wait, seriously? She's such a nice and friendly person.
