Free Hugs, anyone~?

Too much doom and gloom on the ship? Easily fixed, if you ask this mechanic.

There is a table in the mess hall, carefully set up just inside one of the doors, with a small sign on top reading, "Free Hugs!" Next to the sign, looking as smiley as she possibly can, sits Kaylee, ready to hug anyone and everyone who walks through the door.

Non-huggers beware, even you are in danger of some cheering up today.

"You people with your optimism." It made her think of Sasami, always trying to look at the better side of things even though things could be bleak. "But if it helps, I suppose its doing more good than harm."

"It would be a great day when people didn't need such optimism and could concentrate on the greater things at large. But that day may be a long time coming, so I suppose in your way, you do a service to the ship."

Alessa looked at the girl. "Was this your power in your world?"

"You try to help the people on the ship by appealing to their emotional side. To do this, you are a mix of naivete and optimism in the face of poor odds. I have a...person that I know that is like that too. She gave me a hug upon a mutual agreement of companionship."

It was still strange to think about.

"Preparing for the worst is the way we protect the things that are precious," Alessa said. "This is my perspective. The world can be a very ugly place, wherever it is, and things will seek to crush what is beautiful and pure. While I can understand someone existing to give the point if view of staying positive, those who are negative are so because they feel they have something to lose. It may be losing that thing is the last bit of real feeling they have."

Which was more than she wished to say, but Alessa was not a lying demon.
