Training Day

As per the Chief's message, it was training time. Everyone who signed up for training (or was signed up by someone else) was ordered to an open square in the City.

Yes, the City, instead of the sensoriums. That meant that any weapons used would be real. And every bit of damage that they dealt would be real. As would the injuries. Though there didn't seem to be any weapons around, and there were no targets set up.

Interesting, that.

Anyway, in the square was the Chief of Security, who was busy marking off names of people who arrived early or on time. Anyone who figured that they could skip out, though, there is now an unhappy seven foot fully armed and armored Spartan hunting you down.

((ooc: READ THIS BEFORE TAGGING. EDIT: But the first subthread "Early/on time arrivals" is now open for tagging. Training has now begun!))

While she wasn't one for fighting of any kind herself, Kaylee did feel it was important to give whoever was training a nice little boost in morale. She settled herself onto one of the benches and took immediately to tossing encouraging smiles to anyone who looked any king of nervous.

Support. Everyone on Stacy was a team, after all, and team members needed to support one another.

Fletcher was sitting next to Kaylee, watching to make sure everyone was okay but especially Russel.

He looked up, a little surprised when she sat down next to him.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
Finally looking away from those in-training long enough to see who she was sitting next to, Kaylee couldn't help but grin.

"How's it goin', Fletcher? Settled in alright yet?"

He smiled a little and nodded, holding back a deep yawn. "I guess so..." He didn't really have any choice but to. "Um, what about you, Kaylee?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
None of them really had the choice of it, but at least Fletcher didn't seem too bad off. "Yeah, 'M doin' pretty good with it. Got a ship to stay in, and a couple of my crew members're here, too, so I can't complain too much, right? Speakin' of," she added thoughtfully, "didja ever find who you were lookin' for?"
greennotgold: (Honest smile)

[personal profile] greennotgold 2010-01-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Ah..." His smile got a little sadder, but he nodded. "I found one of them. My big brother. No one else so far, though..." He looked down, hands folded on his lap. "I'm glad you found your friends."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Big brothers're just as good as anybody," Kaylee assured him. "Sometimes even better." She hoped some more of his folks were down there and ready to hatch. Kids shouldn't have to feel so low.

[personal profile] greennotgold 2010-01-24 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah. I'm glad he's here." If it had to be anyone, there was no one better than Russel.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fletcher seemed at least somewhat pleased with it, and that was good enough for Kaylee. "Have you had a trip to the sensoriums yet?"
greennotgold: (Awwww)

[personal profile] greennotgold 2010-01-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
He swung his legs idly as he answered. His feet didn't quite reach the floor. "Uh-huh, a couple times. But it's kind of weird in there, so... I don't know if I like it." Little did he know he was speaking to a woman who knew spaceships far better than he.

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Guess it might take some gettin' used to." Especially the fact that the room tended to shift whenever your mind did. The stable, if somewhat disgusting, environment of Stacy herself was probably much better to try and focus on.
greennotgold: (Curious)

[personal profile] greennotgold 2010-01-26 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm... all of it does." He looked down at the training ground for a moment before continuing. "You know, we-- we don't even have flying machines where I'm from. Let alone spaceships."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-26 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Really?" Kaylee couldn't really think of a world without all of that tech herself. Apparently there were quite a few on the ship who didn't know all that much about the ships, though. "Must be a whole new experience for ya, then..." She tried a more upbeat approach toward it, "But think of all the things you can learn from it."

And Kaylee was now getting one such smile for herself from an auburn-haired girl already sitting in observation. "Hi! I think we've spoken over the comms - Kaylee, right?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaylee recognized the voice more than the face. It was hard to misplace the cheer, especially given the fact that this was one of the few people on the ship who had actually had some form of happy thing to say. "That'd be me. It's Nanoha, right?"

[personal profile] starlightace 2010-01-24 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yep!" She nodded pleasantly. "So what brings you here? Just watching for the fun of it?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Having someone around that smiled and gave off such enthusiastic energy was refreshing, Kaylee decided. "Figured I'd come out and give everybody workin' a bit of moral support. Least I can do, seein' as I ain't much of a fighter myself. How 'bout you?"
starlightace: (Stand By)

[personal profile] starlightace 2010-01-24 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nanoha would certainly concur, Kaylee - it was nice to be around cheerful people. "That's really nice of you to do! I'm here because ... well, I was a combat instructor back home, so I'm kind of curious to see how they're going to be teaching everyone."

"Also," Nanoha indicated the blonde nine-year-old with the mismatched eyes with a point of her finger, "I wanted to come see how my daughter was doing with everyone else. Maybe that's a bit overbearing, though..."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's the least I can do, really. Sometimes, with this sorta thing, it's nice for 'em to have somebody backin' 'em up. Even if they don't know 'em," Kaylee laughed.

Following Nanoha's finger, Kaylee spotted the little girl. "Cute lil thing, ain't she?" Kaylee observed. "'M sure she likes havin' you 'round, though. Seems like it'd be comforting, havin' your ma right there."
starlightace: (Raging Heart Stand By)

[personal profile] starlightace 2010-01-24 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's true, it is. I'm sure they'll appreciate it."

"She sure is! Her name's Vivio." Nanoha's smile softened a bit, becoming more warm and subdued than brilliantly cheerful. "She has both of us, actually. Fate and I were so glad to see her safe, you know?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Even better," Kaylee confirmed. It'd be nice enough if her own parents were around. She could only guess how hard it would be on a nine-year-old if she was all alone. At least she had Mal here, and Inara. Kaylee was grateful for that much. "Still waitin' on whoever else might be poppin' out, myself, but I'm glad enough to have some of my crew here. It's a big comfort."
starlightace: (n_n)

[personal profile] starlightace 2010-01-24 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"It is," She'd tried not to show it, but she'd been so terrified that she and Fate would never see Vivio again... she didn't want to think about a world in which they were separated for good. Nanoha looked out at Vivio and then back at Kaylee, her smile brightening again. "I can imagine! It's always wonderful to have people you know and care about. What sort of crew were you?"

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-24 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Really, it was nice to see someone so cheerful, Kaylee couldn't help but think it again. She was normally plenty cheerful herself, but there was just something about having someone to bounce it off of that amplified it that much more. "It really is. Wouldn't trade any one of 'em for the world. We were a transport crew, planet to planet. Small, maybe, but I don't think there's a body in the 'verse who was ever so lucky to have a crew or ship like mine."
starlightace: (Sunset)

[personal profile] starlightace 2010-01-25 07:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"It sounds like they were more of a family to you than just a crew - which makes sense if you spent so much time on the ship together." Nanoha's gaze returned to the training. "Who else is here? Maybe I know them, too."

[identity profile] voiceofserenity.livejournal.com 2010-01-25 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"One of the best kinds of family I could ever ask for." And it was true. Kaylee wouldn't trade a single one of them for the world. "Well, right now it's just three of us. Malcolm Reynolds, who's the captain, and Inara Serra."
