Meet and Greet Part Deux: The Socialing

The new people will find themselves ushered out of Obs Deck, so it can be shot down to the planet again, to pick the crew up. Eventually, the crew members on the mission are brought back up, and the doors open to let the two groups meet.

The newbies are likely not expecting their new crew-mates to come back bearing presents--which some of them are.

[ooc: This time anyone can post in. REMEMBER TO TAG OTHER PEOPLE, THO. This is set after the mission so mission peoples can meet the newbies. Latecomer newbies, if you want, you can just tag your guys into this one to make things easier.]

Jamie says noncommittally, "Aye, he could have." He thinks it's maybe best to not get into the whole men being better than women argument with Katara. It's possible that Katara's brother might just be being protective - he's never met the man, so he couldn't say. Besides, it saves the inevitable argument that would wind up happening when Jamie says something that is sexist.

He nods in agreement to her statement about Luthor, but doesn't say anything else on the subject, having seen him around the room. He'll make his own observations before he draws any further conclusions about the man.

He smiles a little at the sigh. "I thought he might have been, from what ye are saying." If he had a little sister, he might have felt the same way. "In that case, it explains a lot." He hesitates for a moment, about to ask about her playing mom, but settles back and simply lets the statement end there. Hopefully Katara won't pick up on the hesitation.

"Yeah, he could," Katara said, casting a stern eye to what Jamie isn't saying. He seem,s a little quite about that, and she wondered if that might be because Jamie might agree with Sokka. But she hoped that wasn't the case: Jamie seemed like such a sweet boy, she couldn't believe he would believe in dumb comparisons like that.

He also seemed a bit quiet about Luthor, and Katara wondered if that might not be a difference between the two of them: Katara was not one to keep her mouth shut, and Jamie tried not to raise a fuss. That might make Jamie better liked, and maybe Katara couldn't blame him. After all, HE had never had to get locked up by security, or be scolded by Leon or be told off by Paco.

But at this point, Katara is DEFINITELY noticing that Jamie is saying very little, and now she wasn't going to let that slide. "What is it taht you;re not saying, Jamie? You seem awfully quiet."

Well, Jamie tries to keep quiet - it doesn't necessarily mean that he's always successful. Especially if he gives into to his impulses. He did threaten to punch Luis in the face, after all.

And it doesn't help when the other person is good at picking up what he's not saying. He grimaces a little as he realizes Katara's gotten at least an inkling that he's trying to keep from saying something stupid.

"Och, it's just..." Well, maybe if he chooses one of the things to talk about, he can let the others slide. And Luthor, all things considered, may actually be the safest of the topics. It's certainly the least personal.

"There's something about Lex Luthor that bothers me," he admits. "I'm just not sure what it is."

No good Jamie: you're painfully obvious. Even if Katara hadn't had Bene Gesserit training to learn when people are hiding things, she's still very observant, and knew that she was going to corner Jamie a moment and ask him why he was avoiding the issue. For now though, she was at least going to answer one of Jamie's queries.

"Lex Luthor's a shrewd man," Katara said. "He has secrets and he's very sure of himself. He has a plan for things if they go wrong, so that it goes in his favor. In other words, Luthor has got a plan B and even a plan C if he needs one. I never forgot what happened at the Bridge. That's just a part of who he is."

And that said, she turned her stern eyes to him. "And why are you avoiding what I'm asking you?"
bonnypiperlad: (seriously?)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-18 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not going to be able to get out of this, is he? Jamie sighs, then takes a deep breath and turns to face Katara. "Because I didna particularly want to upset ye, that's why." Or get into a fight with her, depending on which way the conversation went.

He looks out at the room, and gestures. "Look, people are having a good time. We should be enjoying ourselves, and proud of what we did. Do ye really want me to go into something that'll ruin that?"

Well, more than the talk of the Nightmare King did, but that's a little different.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara crossed her arms. "And what exactly do you think you have to tell me that is going to get me upset? Do you think I shouldn't go to Sheeana to train because she's a girl? Do you have a problem with strong women? If you don't tell me what you have a problem with, I'm going to keep guessing,a nd the more I get the more annoyed I'm going to get."

Katara put her hands on her hips. "If you don't tell me, I'm just going to wonder what it is hide from me."

"Aye, well, what I was going to say was in regards to what ye said about being a mother to your brother. I was thinking that maybe it might not be the best subject to bring up." Because, sometimes, when someone is trying to mother someone else that actually isn't their child, it's because the actual mother isn't there.

Jamie folds his arms against his chest as well. "And since ye aren't going to let this rest, I might as well tell ye I do think there are some things men are better at than women."

He lets that sink in, then says, "But before ye bite my head off over it, ye should also know that I've been already been told I come from a verra backwards time and that I should know better."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Katara had no idea what Jamie was talking about there. "What are you talking about? I know that I'm a mother to him, I had to be. Mom was gone, so, it really wasn't an is..."

But she dies stop short when she hears that, and the glare coming from Katara was enough to quail even Combustion man. "Oh really? Well, since your5 world is so very backwards, why don't you enlighten me? I'd really like to know all the things a man can do better than a woman. Please go on."
bonnypiperlad: (not happy)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
This is exactly why he didn't want to say anything. But no, Katara had to push. And Jamie is not quailed easily. "For one thing, we don't press the issue when someone is making it clear that they don't wish to talk about something."

He glares right back. "I was raised completely differently than ye were. I come from a place where men went out to fight, and women stayed home to raise the bairns - and there's no such thing as superpowers or bending or any of that. I'm not saying that's the only way. I've seen that now. I've met plenty of strong women in my day." And there's been plenty of times when he's needed their help, but that's very hard for him to admit.

"It's not easy to change overnight, Katara. I'm trying, whether or not ye believe me."

Jamie shakes his head, expression more than a little frustrated. "Ye know what? I'm not going try and justify myself to ye. Ye can deal with what I am or ye cannot. If ye can't, I'm sorry."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Katara was surprised, and her anger started to lose some of its momentum. "Sometimes things do need to be mentioned. If my friend has a certain point of view, I'd still like to know why. You'll have to forgive me if its pushy, but I prefer the truth to beating around the bush."

Here though, she met Jamie's gaze. "Just because there is bending in my world doesn't mean its any more open about letting men and women mixing. My tribe was only a little less sexist, I mentioned that with Sokka. To get where I am now, I had to fight for it, challenge the person that would be my teacher. If I didn't, the only skill I'd have now would be healing. I wanted to fight, pure and simple, because that is what my people raised us to be, all of us."

She sighed. "But I also know when to back off too. You're my friend, and you've never treated me with disrespect, so I shouldn't react as hostile now. I did ask. For that, I'm sorry. It's just a sensitive subject for me. If people want to fight for this they care about, I think they should, male or female."

Jamie hadn't realized Katara had come from a similar society - at least, in terms of how women are treated - and he is also surprised. "Sokka?" he interjects. The name isn't familiar at first, then he figures it out. "Och, he'd be your brother." He shuts up after that and listens to the rest of the explanation.

Afterwards, he says quietly, "Ye don't have to apologize. I didna realize that your tribe was like that. If ye had to fight to get where ye were, I do see why someone like me would cause a strong reaction."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-19 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Katara offers an embarrassed smile. "Yeah, I guess I never mentioned his name before. He's not that hard to spot actually: he has a bit of a wolf tail haircut, and is wearing blue like me. He has the same skin tone too."

Katara shook her head. "But you aren't 'someone' like you, you're Jamie, and you are right: if you're trying to overcome that, It won't help to have me yelling at you for it. I guess I'm still learning to get over some of the things that happening other people's worlds. It's a lot to get used to."

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-20 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
"That's not completely true." Jamie states, frankly. "It does help, if I did say something that was offensive to ye. Like ye said, sometimes things do need to be mentioned."

He gives her a smile back and adds. "There's a lot of things to learn about people on here. Everyone has different..." he tries to think of a word that would work, then gives up. "Everything, aye? It's enough to make your head swim."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-20 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"I usually like to know just what my good friends think about me," Katara said, "but I can see that there are certain things that are better left unsaid. But if its anything that you think is important, please tell me, okay Jamie?"

Katara laughed. "You don't have to tell me that! I'm the kind of person who likes to talk to everyone, and sometimes that means that I learn about things that I'd never even experienced in my world before. Its not really a bad thing though, just something to get used to. Magic, technology, different species of people. That's a lot to be asked for any of us."
bonnypiperlad: (smile)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-21 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
He nods. "Aye, Katara. If it's important, I will definitely tell ye. And I hope ye will do that same." There's a small grin that appears then. "Not that I don't think ye wouldn't. Ye aren't afraid to speak your mind at all."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Thank you," Katara said, smiling kindly. "I consider you a close friend on the ship Jamie, I wouldn't really like it if we were fighting with each other long. It wouldn't feel right."

Katara smiled. "My best feature and my greatest flaw, I'm sure Sheeana would say."
bonnypiperlad: (talking)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-21 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
"No, it wouldn't," Jamie agrees. "I don't like fighting with my friends either, and ye are a friend, so." He shrugs and gives her a smile, then wrinkles his nose at the last comment.

"I'm not sure that it's such a bad flaw, no matter what Sheeana says."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
She was glad that she had made herself clear with Jamie, and she knew that evens he had things that she needed to work on.

"It's not so much that its bad, but that I have to watch how I use it at times. It's not like I don't know I lack in certain disciplines, but it helps to have your teacher's words in your head, so you make those mistakes less."
bonnypiperlad: (hrmph2)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-22 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
A rather wry expression appears on Jamie's face. "Aye. I think I know what ye mean. It doesna always help, but every once in awhile ye listen to that wee voice in your head." He may not be as successful at it as Katara, but he knows a little bit about certain people and their advice.

He glances down at the still-partially filled bag he is carrying, and gives Katara a rather apologetic smile. "It's been good to talk to ye - and thank ye again for the present. I'll play for ye sometime, aye? But I should see about finding the other people I have presents for."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-22 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, it does," Katara replied. "I don't think anybody on this ship are free of mistakes, despite their best interest. There are going to be times where we just lose focus and make the wrong decision. The thing is, if that's going to happen, I'd rather it be misunderstandings where we can work things out later."

"Of course," Katara said, smiling. "I'll leave you be. You're sure to be a busy man. Hope to see you soon, Jamie!"
bonnypiperlad: (So...)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-22 09:23 am (UTC)(link)
Jamie shook his head at the 'busy man' comment, but he's smiling. He lifts his arm and gives Katara a wave. "I'm sure I will see ye soon, Katara. Merry Christmas!"

He slips into the crowd and is soon gone from sight.
