Meet and Greet Part Deux: The Socialing

The new people will find themselves ushered out of Obs Deck, so it can be shot down to the planet again, to pick the crew up. Eventually, the crew members on the mission are brought back up, and the doors open to let the two groups meet.

The newbies are likely not expecting their new crew-mates to come back bearing presents--which some of them are.

[ooc: This time anyone can post in. REMEMBER TO TAG OTHER PEOPLE, THO. This is set after the mission so mission peoples can meet the newbies. Latecomer newbies, if you want, you can just tag your guys into this one to make things easier.]

"Aye, the tentacles are a bit..." Jamie trails off, distracted by the forked tongue. He realizes after a moment that he's probably being quite rude and should probably stop staring at it, and gives Rei a sheepish look by way of apology.

"Um. Anyway," he says, sort of picking up where he left off. "I don't think it's the same girl, although she sounds new as well. I'm no familiar with accents from the Colonies...er. I mean the Amer...that U.S. place ye mentioned."

Rei noticed Jaime staring, and closed his mouth. You'd think after freaking out dozens of people throughout time and space, he'd be more careful about those small, non-human things. But then again, he was so used to the features, like his pointed ears, that he could barely remember a time without them.

"'She sounds new'? Well, if people are new to you, you must have been around here for a while. Or at least before the people I saw coming out of pods when I first woke up. How long have people been on this ship-thingymajig?" It would be good to have reference, and see how long he'd be around. Though, considering he couldn't feel his normal connection to the Guardians, he'd be unable to time travel. Which meant he'd be stuck for a while.

...Wait a minute, what was that last bit? "Colonies? Who the heck still calls them the Colonies anymore?" It was starting to dawn on Rei - that Invisible guy he'd met when he woke up seemed to be from the future, post 24th Century if he was a human in a different galaxy. So, maybe there were people from the past, too. "Eh, senhor McCrimmon," he said, trying to be polite about this, "what year where you born, if you don't mind my asking?"

He'd noticed the ears, but has seen a few people on board with at least similar looking appendages. The tongue was just...unexpected. "Sorry," he says, still sheepish. "I didna mean to stare."

As for how long people have been here? He thought someone might have said something about it...but, unfortunately, he can't remember. He shrugs. "Time's...a wee bit strange, here. I know there's people who have been here longer than I have, and I know I've been to five or so of these greeting things since I arrived. One of the older crew members or command staff might be able to give ye a better idea."

Jamie is suddenly very interested in his feet. He really has to stop using the word 'Colonies'. It tends to give things away. "I'd rather not say," he starts, then reconsiders somewhat. "Have ye heard of Culloden?"

[identity profile] watchwith3hands.livejournal.com 2010-01-13 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, staring is fine, just as long as you don't accuse me of being a witch or the devil or something and try to throw me in a lake to see if I float," he replied with a shrug. "Really, it's happened before, and now I'm re-hee-ally careful whenever I'm in Germany around the 15th Century. Why couldn't everyone have just listened to Charlemagne?"

He was starting to ramble, and he knew it. This wasn't the kind of thing he needed to be telling strangers, but he was separated from the Guardians, and that made him nervous. And when he got nervous, he got wordy.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm down a bit. "Culloden, Culloden, Culloden," he said the word a few times, letting it roll around in his head. He had to really think about it - after all, he'd been traveling space and time for almost ten years, and, even if he could only remember four of them, there was a lot of history stored in his brain. "Culloden, no, don't think... wait, no, it's familiar. Hmmm... oh, yeah, it's a town in Scotland, right? Didn't some sort of battle take place there? I think... I think Puck took me to some sort of memorial there when we were visiting the 1990s. I don't really remember that much from the trip, but I guess that's what I got for having my Great Britain tour guide be an Irishman from the 24th century."

Rei really wasn't sure if any of that would make sense to Jaime. His talk of time travel tended to confuse people. And usually got him written off as crazy.

"I've no doused ye with holy water yet, have I?" Jamie may be joking - or he may not. It's really hard to tell with the current expression on his face.

It lightens, though, as he can tell that Rei is rambling, and he doesn't want to make the man any more nervous than he already seems to be. "There's stranger here on Stacy, so I woulda worry about it."

At least he knows a little about Culloden, which is more than most people have when Jamie mentioned it. He looks a little strange when Rei mentions the memorial, but it's not because of the time travel. "They...still remember? That far from the battle?"

There's a wellspring of emotion that threatens to come out from hearing that, and it's a visible effort to stuff it back down. He clears his throat. "And aye, it was in 1746. I was about 17 or so at the time." He looks maybe around 20 now.

There's a thoughtful look he gives Rei after that as he mentally goes through the dates that were mentioned. "So did ye actually meet Charlemagne when ye were time traveling?"

[identity profile] watchwith3hands.livejournal.com 2010-01-14 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Hey, I'm Catholic, if holy water did anything to me, I'd be a crispy cinder already."

Rei could tell Jaime was trying to hide some emotions. He did that enough to recognize it. But he wouldn't push anything. There was enough information there for Rei to infer that the man had actually seen the battle. And battles were never a pretty thing.

"Well, yeah, battles tend to get remembered, or at least important ones, I guess," Rei tried to be gentle saying that. Best not to accidentally push any buttons. "Heh, though, some get remembered in weird ways. Like, Battle of Marathon is remembered with a foot race, what's up with that?" He couldn't help but grin. Oh, he knew the reason, but it was still pretty weird to him.

"Mmm, nah, haven't gotten to meet him. It'd be hard to communicate with him, really. I don't know Latin or Frankish or whatever he spoke. Though, my friend is fluent in Latin, maybe she could help me out..." he paused for a moment, taking a good look at Jaime. "...You know, you're taking all of my talk about time travel really well."

Jamie smiles a little at the mention of the Battle of Marathon, but doesn't directly respond to the question. He's not really willing to pursue that particular subject further, it seems.

However, he does comment off-handedly, "It's a lot easier to talk to people when ye travel in something that translates in your head for ye."

Rei gets a considering sort of look as Jamie weighs how much more he wants to say in regards to the subject. Finally, he does add, "And I may have a wee idea what you're talking about."

[identity profile] watchwith3hands.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Wait, wait, wait, hold up," Rei said, holding his hands up and furrowing his brow. "Let me see if I heard this right. You travel in something that translates for you. Okay, maybe aliens really did build the pyramids or something and my dear Egyptian lady hasn't told me yet, but... that sounds like some really, really good technology for the eighteenth century."

He was starting to get really curious about the Scotsman. He narrowed his eyes, and adopted a rather serious tone that he didn't use often. "What kind of idea?"
bonnypiperlad: (solemn)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-15 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Aye, well." Jamie shrugs. "It's not my technology, now is it? It's the Doctor's."

He frowns at the tone, and straightens up a little from his slump. Serious tones never bode well. He looks around cautiously to make sure no-one can overhead, then lowers his voice and says, "About time travel. I know it can be done."

Which, really, someone from the 18th century should not know about.

[identity profile] watchwith3hands.livejournal.com 2010-01-15 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Rei really wasn't about to say which time period should know about time travel or not. After all, the others he knew were from ancient Egypt and future Ireland, respectively. Hell, he himself was from the eighties. No, what surprised him was that normal humans weren't supposed to know about time travel.

"Who told you?" Rei said sternly, narrowing his eyes. He practically hissed it. "You're not a Guardian - there are no changes on you. So one of us had to tell you. Who told you about time travel?"
bonnypiperlad: (hrmph)

[personal profile] bonnypiperlad 2010-01-16 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Guardian?" Jamie is utterly confused for a moment. "What are ye talking about? Nobody told me. I wouldna have believed them if they did."

There's a visible tensing of his body, then, and he shifts forward in his seat as he fixes Rei with a similarly narrow-eyed look. "I don't think I care much for your tone. What business is it of yours if I know about time travel?"

[identity profile] watchwith3hands.livejournal.com 2010-01-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Rei sighed, leaning back and relaxing a bit. "It wasn't any of us. Good." He said quietly.

"I'm... sorry. That was rude of me. I try not to make a habit of making an ass of myself, but it happens sometimes." He quickly debated whether or not to tell Jaime anymore then that, but he was severed from his powers, so what difference would it make? Besides, an explanation would be polite. "See, my job, literally, is to keep time going smoothly, because I'm not a part of any timeline. I'm what's called a Guardian of Time. There are only six of us at the most at any given moment. And normal, mortal humans aren't supposed to know about us. Or time travel in general, outside of fiction."

"Aye, well." Jamie is still sounding somewhat prickly, but he manages to refrain from saying something insulting in return. The explanation gives him time to cool down a little, and he starts to look rather less like he's about to start a fight and more just generally cranky. Even that begins to ease up as he listens further.

"Most people don't know about time travel where I'm from, either," he admits. "At best, people would have thought ye to be mad. More people believe in it here, but there's not too many of us that actually have." He's lowered his voice a little without realizing it. "Traveled in time, that is, not just taken from different times and places in different universes."
