Meet and Greet Part Deux: The Socialing

The new people will find themselves ushered out of Obs Deck, so it can be shot down to the planet again, to pick the crew up. Eventually, the crew members on the mission are brought back up, and the doors open to let the two groups meet.

The newbies are likely not expecting their new crew-mates to come back bearing presents--which some of them are.

[ooc: This time anyone can post in. REMEMBER TO TAG OTHER PEOPLE, THO. This is set after the mission so mission peoples can meet the newbies. Latecomer newbies, if you want, you can just tag your guys into this one to make things easier.]

"Miss Katara, are you all right?" Picard asked. The concern was obvious in his voice, and he set one hand on the girl's back uncertainly. He'd never been much good at cheering up children, but he was determined to try anyway.

Katara would have been slightly annoyed at being referred to as a kid, but she was also forgiving when it came to Jean Luc Picard. Despite being a very busy man, he also had a caring side to him. She had thought that after Worf's ceremony, he had a prominent father figure to him.

"I'm just getting over some home sickness Captain," Katara said. "I suppose it was all that snow and ice. I was just reminded I might never see all of them again."

Which, when she thought about it, was a little selfish. She was far from the only one who lost their world.

"I understand, Katara. I don't feel homesickness quite the same way others do, I imagine. I always have felt my home was here, among the stars and unknown. I do miss the Enterprise, terribly so, but ... there is a kinship between these stars and the others like them." He let his arm drop from Katara's back and smiled down at her.

"I know it might not help very much, but can I tell you something about home?"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
At this Katara smiled. "That's the advantage of having your sort of technology, Captain Picard. You can move out of your universe, onto the next adventure. For someone like me, the small little village at the Southern Pole is my home. It's the place that housed me and my family, and kept secret the fact that I was a waterbender."

Katara nodded. "I'd be delighted to here it Captain."

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 06:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know about that, Katara. Even in the days of sailing and sea travel, there were those who made their home among the waves, taking home with them in their travels.

"But home is something you can take with you. As much as your village may have been a home, you can still have one here, among us. You have friends and family here, who care for you and are proud to consider you their friend and family in turn. Homesickness will pass, but don't let a longing for the past blind you to the joys to be found in the present."

"I know there are people like that," Katara said, "But I'm sure they also might have lived a bit of their lives in sea too, or are at least used to living that way. I wish I were one of those people, but there will always be the memory of ice and snow that is my home. I doubt you could take that away from either me or my brother."

Here though, Katara smiled. "I actually agree with all of that. You'd be surprised, but I have actually made close friends, and even certain parent figures in some of the people here. I'm not saying I'm ungrateful, I'm actually really happy. I just can't ever completely forget where I'm from, and that a tradition of honored waterbending and family togetherness is now gone, thanks to the Ohm. And some of these other people...what will they do?"

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I don't know, Katara. I wish I had all the answers, but I don't. That's what makes working together so important."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara nodded. "I doubt anyone has all of the answers sir. If we really want them, we have to look for them ourselves. Otherwise, they were hardly worth asking to begin with."

She paused. "But there are some questions you might be able to answer for me sir. I know I just got off the ship, but that time off leave didn't make my mind sleepy. I'd like to know if there have been any more progress on the thing that's waking up in Escherville."

"None that I'm aware of," Picard replied, "though I am told the Magical Department is working on it." That felt really weird to say.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Katara looked a little grave here. "Sir, with all due respect, I really hope that the Magical Team knows what they're doing. I don't know if many people on the ship are aware of the danger that's coming to them. They aren't prepared. If you think that is all right, that the magic team has it all under control, I'll believe you. But if the Nightmare King attacks and we've underestimated him..."

Katara trailed off here. "I'm going to talk to Nanoha. I have to know what they're planning. The Outsiders need to be prepared too."

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2010-01-06 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
"Miss Katara, where I'm from, I barely accepted the concept of magic as anything but superstition. I'm afraid I'm the wrong person to talk to for an understanding of what the Magic Department is doing."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
"I see," Katara said, looking more concerned. "Magic does exist in my world, but I don't know how it will stack against the Nightmare King. I'm just hoping we don't have another casualty on our hands again. That and...you know I'm waiting for someone too."

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah, yes, Mister Aang. I do hope I approve of him," Picard said jokingly.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-07 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sir, with all due respect, unless he's changed much, which I doubt, Aang is a boy that is impossible NOT to love. Even with all of his strength and ability, he's the first to try and talk down a conflict. In some ways, I think Aang is a better person than I am."

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2010-01-08 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Then I look forward to meeting him!"

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2010-01-08 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Katara grinned. She wouldn't have told anyone, but Captain Picard was one of the people on her ship that was actually given respect by her personally.

"I'm sure you will. He's a wonderful man."
