Outsiders Training, Spectators Welcome [Please wait for appropriate sub-threads]

Slobo stood back with Superbike and surveyed his work. On a street in the city, he had rigged a PA system with speakers from Outsider's Plaza. Static would probably be unhappy with that, but it's worth it. On either end of the street a red line is drawn in spray-paint. Everything was set, now he made the call and waited.

"Yeah, friends don't let friends live without a good ass kicking." Right, sure motto to live by.

So maybe she should just--

"What? Oh, no, nothing really official or anything. Katara had mentioned maybe the group hanging out afterward. But yeah, nothing really serious or anything."

Damnit, Katara beat him to the punch. Why should this surprise him?

"Right, right, group things... I was gonna ask if you, y'know, wanted to go out...or something... But, ifyou'redoingsomethingwithKatarathat'sokaytoo."

Despite working up the courage, Virgil Ovid Hawkins will always be just a geek. And geeks don't handle a lot of thing well. Like curve-balls. They do odd things, like start to talk really fast in an effort to backtrack.

"You mean go out, like a date out?" Ok, important thing to clarify here, she wasn't sure if he liked her like that because..well..come on...he never even once grabbed her or made a move. Usually the only guys who did that were married or gay and she didn't see a ring.

"Well, yeah, actually. Um, but if you don't want to, that's totally cool."

Way to go, Virg. Give her a nice, easy out.

"No!" She rushed the answer.

"I mean no 'I don't not want'...god this is turning into some stupid 80's sitcom script." Her fist slammed into her thigh, the pain giving her a bit more clarity and focus, daddy dearest was right about some things at least.

"I mean I'd like to go out, on a date, with you."

He was shocked. 'Yes' was about as far from the response he expected as he could get. Laughing, sure. Her trying to kill him, not unusual. But 'yes'? That was a new one.

"R-really? Alright then! We'll, uh...have to figure something out, then." He grinned; a grin he hadn't had for quite a while.

Okay, so maybe he hasn't thought all of this through yet.

"Yeah Really...this wasn't like a bet or something..was it?"

Rose looked around suddenly to see if someone was watching them, if so someone would be in a here-to-for unknown world of pain.

But he was grinning, a happy looking kinda grin, so maybe it was on the level.

"Don't worry about anything fancy, I get the feeling neither of us are exactly John Hughes material."

"A bet? Not that I know of..." Now he was going to get paranoid about Katara and Slobo placing bets on whether or not they could talk him into doing this. It didn't seem like something she'd do, but Slobo.. He could see Slobo doing it.

"Anyway, I get the feeling that fancy would just get real uncomfortable real fast around here, anyway. I was thinking something like a nice fly around the ship; When I agreed to do the repairs, Stacy put a pretty good map in my head, and the views from the sky are...well, you'll just have to see 'em to believe 'em."

"Fly? I'm good, but I tend to suffer from you know, gravity." Rose chuckled a bit, flying was fine for some but it gave her the willies a bit. If he was proposing they fly he was going to have to deal with her hanging on for dear life.

Static pulled his disk out of his pocket. "What, you think I don't know that?" He unfurled and dropped it,letting it hover just above the ground. "I can fit both of us on the disk, and carry you easily. Plus, with the metal in your boots, you won't have to worry about falling off; magnetics are my friend." He grinned.

"And before you say anything, I have done this before. The flying someone thing, I mean."

"Yeah, just don't say you weren't warned if I leave nails marks in your shoulders."

"Cause of hanging on I mean." Hastily she mimed hanging onto his shoulders, though why her usual sexual humor was not in full force was a wonder. Usually she would be making every suggestive comment in the book rather than shying away even from inadvertent ones.

[identity profile] static-shock68.livejournal.com 2009-11-24 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Static snickered. Not at the comment, but her reaction to realizing what she'd said. "Wow, Rose, nice cover. But I think that even you'd have some trouble biting through this jacket." he patted his leather coat. It was worn in and durable, despite a few bullet holes and the occasional slash he'd had to sew up.

"...with your nails, I mean." He chuckled again. There wasn't really any sexual joke there, but it seemed appropriate anyway.

Yeah this was going great. Why was it talking to a nice guy was like a verbal minefield? "Yeah, it's a cool coat."

Cool coat. Even Rose rolled her eye at that, one hand irritably fussing over her hair for want of something to do.

"Can I just say something? Virg, you know me, you know what I am like. How I joke and the way I talk. For some fucked up reason I'm getting tongue tied and worried about every little comment I make because..." Oh this was gonna be as smooth as the coat thing.

"Because you are a nice guy, a good guy. And I don't want to drive you off by being me."

He paused for a minute to look at her. To really look at her. She was nervous as all hell, just like he was, like one wrong move could blow the whole thing up before they'd even started. And he sighed.

"Stop. Just...stop. Rose, I do know you. Not as well as I'd like, but yeah; I know the jokes, the drinking, the smoking, all of it. It's you. Part of who you are. Just like my wise-assery, bearing burdens that aren't mine and taking blame for things that weren't my responsibility are part of who I am. I know." He sighed again, smiled, and stepped closer to her.

"And I wouldn't have asked if I didn't like you already. You're not gonna drive me off by being who you've always been. Just be...you."

Of course, he wasn't really taking his own advice, and was probably cocking the whole thing up with his ability to randomly break into speeches, but hey, you work with what you've got.

Well yay for unique talents.

Rose relaxed and smiled, her hand stroking his cheek before that smile turned slightly sly. "Well then, you won't be too shocked if I get a bit handsy during dodge ball here."

Ok, stage 2:awkward discussions, over.

Static returned the smirk. "I'd be more shocked if you didn't. But, c'mon; Slo's gonna get started soon. We'd better get over there." Static put an arm around her shoulder and started to lead her over towards Slobo, who was preparing to explain the rules.
