Relax: Unconscious land is starting to get to you. [Open]

She hadn't kept track of the days much anymore. She did know that when she tried to sleep though, it wasnt a nice fitful sleep. She hadnt expected as much to begin with, considering she hadn't had that kind of sleep since being here, but somehow, her dreams had gotten progressively worse. Now there would be glimpses of things, bits and pieces of a memeory she was only starting to unravel, a secret fear she had that would make her feel apprehensive and uneasy when she woke up. She alwaus seemed to wake up the same way too: with a start, tears running down her cheeks. She couldn't figure out why she would wake up like that in the first place, but she would somehow get the feeling that she was forgetting something, and for a moment, there was an air of somebody she cared about sharing her pain.

It was a memory she grasped at, almost had then lost again.

This time, she just sat up, wiping her face and taking an exasperated breath. Not much had changed: they'd gotten a new person is the brig, who was just as likely to be here a long time like anyone else. Besides, Katara was curious as to who were the new arrivals on the ship: would they be anyone she knew?

Katara shook her head. "If it were up to me, I'd be giving them the puppy eyes and begging to be let out, but that would mean saying something dumb like 'I'm just a kid, I didn't know better.' I have some level of pride...its just really, really bored right now. And dont let either of them do anything stupid if you can help it. Zuko's on security, its good for him."

Katara blinked,. "Wait, what?!"

"Yeah. I understand."

Mai isn't very vocal, but she does get having pride. She does have her own and she's not about to compromise it for just anyone. She arched a brow at Katara's outburst, "...you remind me of Zuko sometimes. You go charging into something because you think it's the 'right thing to do'. And then you get in trouble."

"Oh." Well, at least that made sense, and it wasn't a quality Katara minded sharing with Zuko.

"Some things are worth getting in trouble for. This could have been better thought out, but its just who I am. I don't just wait for things to become bigger problems anymore if I can help it."

"And a lot of things aren't," she retorts. There's a bit of bitterness in her voice - although really, she's gotten over it by now.

"The only problem with that is that you don't think about the people you're leaving behind."

Katara bristled a little at the reprimand. Really, if it wasn't hearing the disappointment in Captain Picard's voice or Damion's sermons or being told she was stupid, it was somebody telling her that she wasn't thinking about people.

"And some are! Do you really think its easy to do something like this if it doesn't have the best interest of other people here? Do you think I do it because I want to play hero? Has it ever occurred to you the whole reason for doing something like this to begin with is because OF someone left behind?!"

Because she thought about him all right. There wasn't a time that she didn't really think about him.

"I think you think you're a hero and it's your job to fix the world. Just like Zuko."

Mai shrugged, "...I don't really get it. Just don't get yourself killed, OK? I mean... I'd do it for someone I cared about."

She paused, then glanced down at Katara, "I'd do it for Zuko. But that's it."

Katara opened her mouth to say something, then closed it again. Though she wouldn;t admit it, Mai had a point: she did have a tendency to try and "fix" the world, just like Zuko. There was no point in pretending otherwise.

"Well...maybe you're right about that. But I wouldn't have to if the world wasnt so messed up to begin with."

Katara lookeda almost insulted. "I don't intend on dying anytime soon. There are people that need me. And I don't need to tell you who I'd do it for. I'm pretty sure you already know."

"Just because you don't intend on dying doesn't mean you won't," Mai pointed out in reply. She paused, a playful smirk threatening to actually show up on her face.

"You mean aside from everyone you consider a friend? Yeah, I know. And I understand that, at least."

"It'll take a herd of Sabertooth Moose-lion's to make that happen," Katara insisted, returning the smile. "I don't go down that easy."

Katara stuck out her tongue at that. "It's not my fault I'm friendly! But yeah, I understand what you mean too. Even if you don;t care as much about the people on the ship, there is still Zuko."

"Mmhm."

She didn't sound like she believed her, but then again, it was Mai.

"There is Zuko," she admitted, "...the idiot."

That last part was affectionate, really.

That was okay. Katara preferred to show what she could do when the time was right anyway.

"I missed Zuko," Katara admitted. "He's such a moody guy, but when you get to know him, he's really loyal, and would back you in a fight."

She could definitely hear affection.

"He will. It's what he does," Mai nodded, "...so I'm trying to make sure he doesn't die on this stupid ship."

"We all will," Katara said. "You, me and Sokka. And we'll make sure you're protected too. We have to look out for each other on this stupid ship, don;t we? If not, who else will?"

Mai snorted, "I don't need protection."

Katara gave a snort of her own. "That's because you don't DO anything. But how long do you think that will last when you have Zuko for a boyfriend?"

Mai retorted, "Yeah, because it wasn't like I wasn't doing anything when I was fighting you and the Avatar."

"Well then, yeah, of course you were. I'm talking about now, while we're here on the ship. There's a lot of really neat things to find out, and if you think about it, we're in a place where we can find out about other people's worlds and technology. Think of what we can do with that information if we get into a really tight spot."

Mai shrugged, "I don't care. I just want to get home safely. And I want to make sure Zuko gets home safely. This technology, this... stuff. It doesn't matter."

"But that's the point," Katara said. "If we don't learn about this stuff, all this technology, there's no way we're going to go home, let alone survive here. I mean, you've met some of the people here, right? If whatever brought us here brought those guys too, how are we going to defeat it? Even I know my waterbending won't be enough, and I'm a master at it."

"Everyone else seems pretty capable of handling it. Let them go get killed over it."

Mai shrugged again. Logic!

Katara sighed. "Mai, please try. I really care about Zuko, you knwo that, but I care about you too. I don't want anything happening to either of you. There are things here I know we haven't seen. At least make an attempt."

Mai paused for a moment, "...I'm going to help out. But that doesn't mean I care about anyone outside of Zuko, you, or your brother."

Look, Katara, you got her to admit something.

"I understand," Katara said, smiling. She knew Mai admitting like that in the first place was a big thing, and that she would not want to really talk about it, just acknowledge it.

"At least its something."
