Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

"Um... Skillset?" It wasn't exactly a term she had heard before, even though she thought she could guess the meaning. And the smirk raised her caution a bit.

[identity profile] twelvevoltman.livejournal.com 2009-10-02 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, you know, strengths, job experience, reasons you'd be abducted by aliens with an agenda involving warfare."

If it helps, the smirk is an affable one! She's just from Boston. Lol, Boston.

"For example, I once built my own brain, so I can see where I stand out on a 'To Abduct' list."

"You... built your own brain." She paused at that. "Right. Well. I'm an FBI agent. Other than that..." She left the thought hanging, not actually saying the lie. There was a world of reasons for her to be kidnapped. And this wasn't even the first time.

He taps the side of his skull. "Cyborg."

It happens!

"Other than that, a lot of confidential and-or belief-defying things you're not ready to tell a near-complete stranger, even one who professes to being a walking abnormality? Of course, this is just me guessing."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
"If there was anything, yes, you wouldn't have clearance for it. But in my experience, not everyone who claims to be a walking abnormality actually is one." Despite the fact that it was her experience, and part of her actually believed him.

[identity profile] twelvevoltman.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
"I can tell you're not from a version of Earth where I'm alive. If you were, you'd already know I'm a walking abnormality. Not just how much, but enough to go 'Hey, it's that guy! You know, the one who's been on the cover of GQ on account of how devastatingly handsome he is along with being the most brilliant motherfucker ever to live.'"

He continues to grin, half-smug, half self-effacing.

"That first part might be an exaggeration, but the brilliant motherfucker bit is true. Here, I'm just Co-head of Engineering. Did you get your Omnicom yet?"

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
"So I've gone away again." She didn't direct the comment at him, but more or less at the situation. A slightly hysterical look crept into her face.

"No, I haven't gotten that yet. Would it even make sense if you told me what it was? Or what agency, or company, or whatever runs this place is? Because if you're Co-head of Engineering, that would mean there are other departments. And if there are other departments, there must be some level or organization here. Which would point to a leader or set of leaders." It was several jumps in logic, and she knew that. But the more she talked and figured out, the more she could rationalize the situation. At least, that was the hope.

[identity profile] twelvevoltman.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
"Slow down, agent, I hate to disappoint you." He holds up his hands. "Engineering Department is pretty much 'the people who started building things in the Special Weapons wing and got official about it once we were all settled down enough to do some organization.' The only thing we had back at the start in the way of leaders was Cybil Bennet, who named Billy and myself co-heads because everybody else who wanted the position was being a dickweed about it. Cybil has since abdicated captainship to Jean-Luc Picard."

He waits to see how she'll react to that. Especially the "Picard" part.

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
"Special Weapons wing turned into the Engineering Department." Why did everything seem to point back to using science as a weapon? "And Cybil Bennet semi-organized you. But then she turned that over to... Jean-Luc Picard." She would have been a bit more concerned if she hadn't already met someone back home who thought he was Spock. "You don't happen to have any connections to Massive Dynamic, do you?" Since after all, all roads seemed to lead to that company, some way, some how.

"No. I worked for DARPA."

He prefers science for defense, but - yeah.

"Look, you've got a lot of questions, and me, I'd love to answer them, but we're all short on answers. Even the ship brains."

There's a small device like a PDA or a handheld computer in his hand, and he holds it out for her inspection.

"Brainy, Billy Cranston and I designed these for shipwide communication. They're omnicoms. Think of them as internet that only applies to everyone else on Stacy. I'm pretty sure Billy's handing them out over there -" he gestures towards the kid - "so if you could use something to record your thoughts and questions on, get your hands on one. I can't guarantee that your entries won't be hacked if you private them - too many brilliant motherfuckers on this ship - but I can guarantee I'll know who did it."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-03 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
She just thought for a minute. "So... We don't know what's really going on here. That's what you're saying. That we're all in the dark. Even the people like you." There was a small pause. "Well, thank you very much for your help. I'll be sure to ask you if something goes wrong with the omnicom, Mr. Gentry."

[identity profile] twelvevoltman.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Pretty much. We can surmise that something went pretty wrong with the crew before us, and that the crew had some hand in assessing certain early abductees, but seeing as how none of the crew are around for us to question, we're mostly stuck going on the few records left that have missed Stacy's confidentiality wipe."

He pauses a moment before reaching out to put her hand on her shoulder. "Hey. If you're freaked out, don't feel like you need to hide it from everybody around you. We all flip out from time to time."

[identity profile] fbisincenine.livejournal.com 2009-10-04 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Olivia gave a small smile that flickered before hiding again. "Thanks. I'll... I think I'll be alright. Just as soon as I get some work to do, I'll be fine. After all, there's no reason for me not to do my job just because I'm not at home." And if she had work she would have a reasonable excuse for the few hours of sleep she would inevitably get. It was the status quo these days.
