Buy a Little Mercy [Open; Potentially Graphic Material]

Less than an hour after the ship leaves Agrestic's orbit, an announcement is broadcast throughout Stacy.

|| Attention, crew. Your crewmates, Howard Bassem and Charles Merriman, have been apprehended attempting to desert. They will now be given Punishment. According to established guidelines, you are all requested to report to the Observation to witness the Punishment. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly suggested. This will serve as a reminder of the consequences of treason and desertion. ||

On the observation deck, Archon Yavek, Archite Rekkti, two other Daligig and a handful of Kessek soldiers stand outside a spherical force field. Inside the bubble, Orc and Howard are suspended by tentacles looping around their wrists. Orc's ceased thrashing around and struggling against his restraints; rust-colored fissures have developed around his shoulders and forearms from the strain, but now he simply hangs there, looking defeated. Howard's nose is bleeding, and every time a drop falls to the bottom of the forcefield there's a small sizzle. He's weeping and begging the Daligig with every plea possible, but they act as if they aren't listening. Instead, they wait for an audience.

"There isn't?" He frowned. "What happened to rest of his race?"

"War, of course. There are some left, I should be fair, but the majority is gone." Once again, they'd come across a depressing topic and even though it seemed rather apt, given their situation, that wasn't the point of clearing their heads.

"Oh." He was quiet after that, thinking about a war wiping out most of a race of four-eyed centaurs.

"I'm glad you're here," he said after a while. And then stopped walking because he realised that might mean to Barbara like he was glad she was caught up in this mess. "Selfishly, I mean."

"It would be awful to do all of this alone," Barbara agreed and squeezed Ian's hand, "and I'm glad that it's you I'm stuck with, with all of these Doctors around." She smiled and let Ian's hand go to wrap her arms around herself.

Ian smiled back, hugged Barbara briefly, then kissed her on the cheek.

Barbara's eyebrows shot up in surprise at the gesture. He hadn't ever done that to her before. It took a bit of strength to not touch a hand to her cheek, as though the spot on her skin might feel like his lips.

She smiled and looked down at her feet. There was every chance she was reading too much into the little kiss, but she didn't mind. It was...nice. And it wouldn't be so bad if he did it again.

"You'll get sick of me after a while, I'm sure," Barbara said quietly, willing the tingling blush away from her cheeks.

She didn't immediately get upset about what he'd done, but then he had only kissed her on the cheek, which could be taken as a gesture of friendship if necessary. But he wasn't sure how far he could push it - he didn't want it to go horribly wrong and end up losing Barbara's friendship.

In the end he settled for putting a hand on her cheek and saying, "I won't," softly.

It was a confusing, yet wonderful situation to find herself in. And with Ian so blissfully close...she covered his hand with her own, a gesture of acceptance and togetherness, warmth and kindness. She could feel herself leaning forward, watching his beautiful blue eyes inch closer-

The footsteps of a passerby slapped her back to reality and she retreated two steps into her personal space, away from Ian, with a look as though she'd been caught doing something wrong. This entire thing was silly. Ian was her dearest friend and she'd nearly ruined that. His little kiss meant nothing and she was overreacting, or thinking about it too much. Which was kind of the same thing, really.

"I should see if I can find out anything about Howard's state." Cheeks burning red hot, Barbara tried to focus anywhere but the Ian.

Ian looked disappointed when she stepped back. He'd been sure she was about to kiss him and now she wanted to go. He wasn't sure what to do.

"All right," he said. "Let me know what you find out." They didn't need lots of people crowding Howard or the medics, so he wasn't going to go himself.

"I will, I promise," the corner of her mouth twitched like she might smile, but at his look, Barbara thought it best to simply leave and have a good long think about everything. She waved and awkwardly shuffled around the corner of a corridor, vacating the area as quickly as she could.
