Buy a Little Mercy [Open; Potentially Graphic Material]
Less than an hour after the ship leaves Agrestic's orbit, an announcement is broadcast throughout Stacy.
|| Attention, crew. Your crewmates, Howard Bassem and Charles Merriman, have been apprehended attempting to desert. They will now be given Punishment. According to established guidelines, you are all requested to report to the Observation to witness the Punishment. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly suggested. This will serve as a reminder of the consequences of treason and desertion. ||
On the observation deck, Archon Yavek, Archite Rekkti, two other Daligig and a handful of Kessek soldiers stand outside a spherical force field. Inside the bubble, Orc and Howard are suspended by tentacles looping around their wrists. Orc's ceased thrashing around and struggling against his restraints; rust-colored fissures have developed around his shoulders and forearms from the strain, but now he simply hangs there, looking defeated. Howard's nose is bleeding, and every time a drop falls to the bottom of the forcefield there's a small sizzle. He's weeping and begging the Daligig with every plea possible, but they act as if they aren't listening. Instead, they wait for an audience.

Re: AFTERMATH
It takes Howard a few seconds longer than usual to figure out what Zouichi's saying, and a few seconds longer than that to actually respond. His mind's elsewhere. His mind's still dangling up there preparing to be tortured and hasn't yet caught up to his body.
"Didn't you hear, I won the package vacation deal with extra awful?"
Code: 'Okay enough to joke, thank jesus for your healing factor because you scared me there, man'.
Re: AFTERMATH
"Sounds like a raw deal." He gave Howard an awkward smile. "Guess that means we can't remodel your room."
Then, more seriously: "They had no right to do what they did." You know, just in case Howard was going to start in on the stop-endangering-yourself thing.
Re: AFTERMATH
Howard will save the lectures on not shooting the guy with superhuman bodyguards for later. Don't worry, Zou, they're coming. "I wouldn't have tried to go if I knew all this..."
He's not really thinking about it in terms of rights, what's fair and what isn't. Just the facts. There's no escape from the ship, they're trapped, Stacy may lie for them but they're definitely trapped and outmanned by the Kessek.
Re: AFTERMATH
"Yeah, well, you couldn't have known they'd throw a fit like that." He paused, trying to test out his left arm. "Think maybe... they were looking for an excuse. That Yavek guy, anyway."
They might be trapped -- maybe. But as far as Zouichi was concerned, they'd proven that the Daligig, as well as the Kessek, could be injured. Or killed. Even with the ship's interference, he'd managed to land a hit on Yavek.
They weren't invincible. There was hope.
Re: AFTERMATH
There, no more blood. Just your clear
monochromaticface, Zou! Howard stops short of trying to get drying blood out of Zou's hair and crams his shaking hands into his pocket instead."That was a good shot, though. The one you took." A self-preserving person would have aimed for the Kessek, but that's never really been Zou's style. Zou's more of a "shoot who you want dead" type, not a "shoot the person who can take you down fastest" type.
Re: AFTERMATH
If you want to shoot the general, shoot the general!"Thanks. Figured that the Kessek weren't expecting it. Kind of expecting them to shield him with their bodies, what with the whole bodyguard thing. Would have saved me some trouble." And softened them up a little for some follow-up attacks.
Well. Maybe they weren't that dedicated to their job or something. Who knew?

Re: AFTERMATH
It was only a matter of time.
