Buy a Little Mercy [Open; Potentially Graphic Material]
Less than an hour after the ship leaves Agrestic's orbit, an announcement is broadcast throughout Stacy.
|| Attention, crew. Your crewmates, Howard Bassem and Charles Merriman, have been apprehended attempting to desert. They will now be given Punishment. According to established guidelines, you are all requested to report to the Observation to witness the Punishment. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly suggested. This will serve as a reminder of the consequences of treason and desertion. ||
On the observation deck, Archon Yavek, Archite Rekkti, two other Daligig and a handful of Kessek soldiers stand outside a spherical force field. Inside the bubble, Orc and Howard are suspended by tentacles looping around their wrists. Orc's ceased thrashing around and struggling against his restraints; rust-colored fissures have developed around his shoulders and forearms from the strain, but now he simply hangs there, looking defeated. Howard's nose is bleeding, and every time a drop falls to the bottom of the forcefield there's a small sizzle. He's weeping and begging the Daligig with every plea possible, but they act as if they aren't listening. Instead, they wait for an audience.

Lash was almost pushing away at 'dirty monkies' lady so she could get a good look at Zouichi herself. With friends like these...
"You are soooo an idiot!" she told him. "Look at you! You need medical attention! I'm gonna push you there myself but first you have to tell me which part of you I can push or otherwise I'm gonna break something worse!" She was already tearing part of her coat (and her only coat, THANK YOU VERY MUCH) to make a sort of makeshift headband for that cut of his.
"Why is this ship filled with big heroic idiots?!"

Well. Somewhat. The point was that Lash should just leave him alone in a nice corner somewhere and he'd be totally fine. It didn't (yet) even occur to him to give Lash a little good-natured ribbing about actually caring about the well-being of other people.

"I have the situation under control. And I believe some form of stretcher would be best so his injuries aren't made worse by incompetent fumbling."
Being a wee bit possessive? Never.

"If someone hadn't tried to just up and attacked, he wouldn't be this hurt." If you listened closely you could almost hear Lash caring there. A little bit. Kinda. It's not like she did. Honestly. She may have tightened that piece of tissue around his head a little harder than intended.
"Besides, what's with you caring about how I end up carrying him anyway?"
Lash, you were officially an idiot.

Even if she did partially agree that he had been rather foolish. She turned to eye Lash.
"And I care because I don't want to see further harm done to him!"
There's no one naked here, Lash!
And Lash did have a point about the attacking-the-Daligig thing. It was just that with all that had happened and all they'd been through to help the Daligig with their personal vendetta, he hadn't been able to listen for one more second to Yavek yapping about responsibility and the greater good and why it was okay to torture teenagers who didn't even belong in the war in the first place. Well -- not without punching the man's face in, anyway. Nor could Zouichi help smiling a little now at the memory of Yavek howling in pain... closely followed by one of his Kessek bodyguards swooping in to carry him off like an oversized infant. Too bad the tentacle had stopped it from being a clean shot, but revenge was sweet.
Zouichi was startled at Ildraniath's sudden exclamation -- not only because she'd defended him to Lash, of all people, but because of the sudden declaration that she cared about his well-being. He knew she did care, of course, but she kept it closely guarded in public, so as not to leave an opening for those who might take advantage of that sentiment.
He wondered if she knew how much it meant to him to hear her say those words. Even in the heat of the moment.
But more importantly, it was his duty to make sure that people didn't become overly suspicious. Because he cared equally for her. For that reason, he raised a hand in surrender. "Lash, you're right. I should probably go to Medical. But we should also wait for a stretcher. I'm sure you're perfectly capable of moving me by yourself, but that's Medical's job."
Of course, this would mean he'd have to go to Medical, but sacrifices must be made.
NOT YET.
"Baw medical. Ffffiiine I'll go get your dumb stupid body a dumb stupid stretcher or something." It's not like she cared at all either! She just didn't want someone who was clearly valuable as a ship's crewman to be further harmed. Before she ran off, Lash leaned closely to Z's ear and whispered.
"I think she likes you." Somewhere, the world's small balloon was deflating. You'd have to forgive Lash she was pretty dumb with those things.
That done, she stood up again, and moved two of her fingers over her eyes before pointing then at Ildraniath. She was watching you. Then, the wunderkind ran off to find a stretcher and leaving the both of them alone.
Z had the best friends, didn't he.
Re: NOT YET.
"Thank you," he said quietly.
