Buy a Little Mercy [Open; Potentially Graphic Material]
Less than an hour after the ship leaves Agrestic's orbit, an announcement is broadcast throughout Stacy.
|| Attention, crew. Your crewmates, Howard Bassem and Charles Merriman, have been apprehended attempting to desert. They will now be given Punishment. According to established guidelines, you are all requested to report to the Observation to witness the Punishment. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly suggested. This will serve as a reminder of the consequences of treason and desertion. ||
On the observation deck, Archon Yavek, Archite Rekkti, two other Daligig and a handful of Kessek soldiers stand outside a spherical force field. Inside the bubble, Orc and Howard are suspended by tentacles looping around their wrists. Orc's ceased thrashing around and struggling against his restraints; rust-colored fissures have developed around his shoulders and forearms from the strain, but now he simply hangs there, looking defeated. Howard's nose is bleeding, and every time a drop falls to the bottom of the forcefield there's a small sizzle. He's weeping and begging the Daligig with every plea possible, but they act as if they aren't listening. Instead, they wait for an audience.

Barbara pointed a finger at Howard but her gaze was fixed, "that young man is one of the bravest, most valiant people I've ever met. In the short time I've been awake, he has done more for this ship than any of you! He deserves to go and make a life away from Stacey and away from the Daligig."

One of the Kessek chime in. "Bravery is nothing without duty."

It was just like the war on Earth, the one her father died in. All the poor were sent to the front while the rich sat at the back giving orders and signing forms. Barbara folded her arms. If looks could kill, her scathing scowl might have put down small battalions on its own.
"You haven't cared about anyone on this ship before. Why are you starting now? Do you take pleasure from this-this harming of young life?" she growled up at them.

Yavek waves a hand. "Her dissent doesn't threaten us. Let her say her piece, trivial as it is."
He turns back to her. "You have no idea what the Daligig have sacrificed, what I have sacrificed, for this war effort. And what I would be willing to lay down my life for. You may speak your mind about fighting our battles for us but you would be completely incorrect."
Not that he or the Kessek lifted a finger against SHODAN or the robots when they attacked.

"What have you sacrificed?" she asked threateningly, "what have you laied your life down for? Correct me, because I'm certain that your efforts have little to do with the crew's - the ones for fight for you without reward or thanks - survival on board the ship! Let alone off it."

That's a total lie. They have been repairing damage, but they haven't been doing it with the best interest of the crew in mind.
"I am leading a war against beings that can destroy entire worlds. I have been raised since birth to fight. Don't forget that."
no subject
"You've been raised since birth to give commands as though you have the right to control lives and decide what's right. This this not right! If anything you're going to encourage your enemies to strike against you with unfair acts such as this. This is utterly shameful, and if I had the option, I would never work under you or anyone else like you. You're a disgrace to anything good left in this universe."
