Buy a Little Mercy [Open; Potentially Graphic Material]

Less than an hour after the ship leaves Agrestic's orbit, an announcement is broadcast throughout Stacy.

|| Attention, crew. Your crewmates, Howard Bassem and Charles Merriman, have been apprehended attempting to desert. They will now be given Punishment. According to established guidelines, you are all requested to report to the Observation to witness the Punishment. Attendance is not mandatory, but highly suggested. This will serve as a reminder of the consequences of treason and desertion. ||

On the observation deck, Archon Yavek, Archite Rekkti, two other Daligig and a handful of Kessek soldiers stand outside a spherical force field. Inside the bubble, Orc and Howard are suspended by tentacles looping around their wrists. Orc's ceased thrashing around and struggling against his restraints; rust-colored fissures have developed around his shoulders and forearms from the strain, but now he simply hangs there, looking defeated. Howard's nose is bleeding, and every time a drop falls to the bottom of the forcefield there's a small sizzle. He's weeping and begging the Daligig with every plea possible, but they act as if they aren't listening. Instead, they wait for an audience.

"They do not," she spat matching his glare with a look of utter disgust, "they're two frightened children trying to keep themselves alive for longer than what they were expecting after all they've lived through. But you wouldn't know that, would you? You know all the little facts and figures you gather with all of your ridiculous systems and technology, but if you ran this ship like a proper captain, you'd have compassion for those that do your dirty work, and then you'd learn a lot more."

Barbara pointed a finger at Howard but her gaze was fixed, "that young man is one of the bravest, most valiant people I've ever met. In the short time I've been awake, he has done more for this ship than any of you! He deserves to go and make a life away from Stacey and away from the Daligig."

"Why would I pretend to captain this ship when you have your little government all set up to undermine me?" Yavek's voice is full of disdain. "This is standard procedure for treachery. It doesn't matter what he's done for the ship if he's willing to jeopardize our entire cause for his own sake."

One of the Kessek chime in. "Bravery is nothing without duty."

"Duty?!" she eyed daggers at both the Daligig and the Kessek which chimed in "He has served on your ship, did your silly little tasks and fought in this stupid war FOR you because you're too full of your own self importance to fight for yourself!"

It was just like the war on Earth, the one her father died in. All the poor were sent to the front while the rich sat at the back giving orders and signing forms. Barbara folded her arms. If looks could kill, her scathing scowl might have put down small battalions on its own.

"You haven't cared about anyone on this ship before. Why are you starting now? Do you take pleasure from this-this harming of young life?" she growled up at them.

"Should I remove her?" a Kessek asks Yavek.

Yavek waves a hand. "Her dissent doesn't threaten us. Let her say her piece, trivial as it is."

He turns back to her. "You have no idea what the Daligig have sacrificed, what I have sacrificed, for this war effort. And what I would be willing to lay down my life for. You may speak your mind about fighting our battles for us but you would be completely incorrect."

Not that he or the Kessek lifted a finger against SHODAN or the robots when they attacked.

Barbara watched the Kessek - as intimidating as they were - and turned back to Archon.

"What have you sacrificed?" she asked threateningly, "what have you laied your life down for? Correct me, because I'm certain that your efforts have little to do with the crew's - the ones for fight for you without reward or thanks - survival on board the ship! Let alone off it."

"I have greater concerns than the coordination of this little ship. If you didn't notice, we have been repairing the damage here as a favor to you."

That's a total lie. They have been repairing damage, but they haven't been doing it with the best interest of the crew in mind.

"I am leading a war against beings that can destroy entire worlds. I have been raised since birth to fight. Don't forget that."

"Maybe if you did concern yourself more with this little ship, it'd run better and we wouldn't have surprise attacks of clones or androids." Not that she was around for any of that but she knew about it. She certainly know how little the Daligig did to help.

"You've been raised since birth to give commands as though you have the right to control lives and decide what's right. This this not right! If anything you're going to encourage your enemies to strike against you with unfair acts such as this. This is utterly shameful, and if I had the option, I would never work under you or anyone else like you. You're a disgrace to anything good left in this universe."

"When it comes to a mighty war effort against an enemy that would slaughter us wholesale, I do retain the right to control your lives. Do not delude yourself otherwise." Yavek shakes his head. "We are done with this conversation. You have no valuable input here."

Barbara folded her arms and glared. "This is not over until you release the children."
