In the Shadow of the Valley

Summary: Veronica discover a slice of home out on the outer areas of the city.


Not too far off from Central Park, there is a fenced-in sandy area. The only noteworthy things here are some bunkers and vents, and a lot of graffiti on the bunker walls. The sand has footprints - ones that look a bit hurried, actually - that lead to one structure. The door is open - as is the second door inside, which leads to a long staircase, leading into an obviously military installation - quite abandoned, from the looks of things, save for the periodic sound of footsteps and clicking nails on the metal floors and grates.

There's someone here, that's for sure.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORSE

Veronica promptly stumbles back at the sudden change, quite visibly shocked. "...that, that is certainly something." Her words were a bit stilted - her instinct was to make a joke of some sort, but nothing was coming to mind at the moment.

He shifted back with a proud smile. "You bet! I'm kind of a super hero you know? fighting crime, saving lives. I mean...technically right now we're all heroes these days...sort of?" He shrugged not really sure if what he said made as much sense once it was out of his mouth then it had in his head.

There was a few moments of quiet as Veronica pondered the words the boy had said. "I... Guess so. I just woke up recently, still kinda trying to wrap my head around all this." She looks around the room, then folds her arms. "I've wanted to help people, but this wasn't quite what I had in mind..."

"No kidding." He laughed a little with a darker humor. "I don't remember signing up for intergalactic war but well...you gotta kinda roll with it. I mean it's not like we can do anything about it just now." He shrugged feeling like that was at least half zen and wise.

"Heh. Well, it's the scale that's most staggering... War like this is kind of a crazy concept when we only made it to the moon back home." Her head shakes a bit. "Still kinda feels like a dream."

[changelingdude]

"Oh wow, you guys are like...retro then." He grinned despite himself. "Where I come from we've gone way farther. Aliens and everything." He gave her a thumbs up. "If nothing else you can say you lived in exciting times huh? You're a part of history."

"Guess that's one way of putting it," she answers with a half-chuckle. She has no idea just how retro her world is, though...

"Guess so," she answers - she thought helping the Courier was big stuff, but that's a grain of sand compared to all this. "Just hope we're the ones writing it when it's all said and done, though."

[changelingdude]

"Of course we will." Beastboy grinned cheerfully as if he knew for sure. "We're the heroes after all. Saving the verse is what we do. We just hit some bumps every now and then."

That confidence was rather contagious. Veronica grins a bit. "We'll see what happens, I suppose."
