If You Need a Doctor, I'll Examine Every Inch of You [Phys Evals; Open]

Ever since the medical briefing on the comms, the medical bay staff has been preparing for an influx of appointments for physical evaluations, as well as a few walk-ins. After that, the hunt will be on for those who've been skipping such appointments.

A few of the staff members are going about their regular duties, expecting patients or simply biding time at the coffee machine until they're called on.

Ugh, this was going to be annoying. She had met Howard before though, and since he was at least as cynical as she was and had actually told her he'd keep things confidential, he was her best bet.

So he'll probably find Mindy Macready in a hoodie right now, looking fairly antisocial right now.

Howard doesn't blame her even a little. He enjoyed his physical evaluation about as much as locker rooms in high school, which is to say, not at all. So he's not going to try and push Mindy's buttons any.

"You know the drill. Lungs, joints, heart, blood cultures if you want them, urine test if you want it, eyes, ears, mouth, scanners and paperwork."

Oh there was a lot more to it than that. In fact, it was because of that reason Mindy had NEVER had a physical evaluation. The moment someone saw the strain her body went through, there would be investigation and then Daddy would be taken away from her. So this would likely be her first physical evaluation since she was probably nine.

"Screw it, I'll take them all," Mindy said. "It's sort of been a long time since I had one thoroughly. But it has to be only one person, and I can;t really have anyone else knowing about it, all right?"

"I have to leave failsafe information in case I die and you need medical care, but that access only goes live if I'm confirmed dead. So as long as I'm living, me and you are the only ones who know anything."

He hands her a form with the requisite age, gender, name information for her to fill out.

Mindy sighed. "I guess that's fair, but do me a favor and try to stay alive, will you? I'm not trying to have to deal with some other fussy ass doctors if you croak. I sorta like you."

Ah paperwork. She rolled her eyes and started to fill it out as quickly as she could: all in script, as her father insisted on her writing as sophisticated as she could.

"Don't worry, staying alive is pretty much on the top of my list." It's not because he has any soft spot for Mindy. She's a kid. He's really not a fan of kids, no matter how capable they are.

"Nice writing." Howard takes the form back. Basic human. Awesome. Makes his life way easier. "Okay, hold out your arm, I'm taking your blood pressure."

And knowing that would, strangely enough, be all right with her. She was frankly sick of the whole "aww, isn't she pwecious" bullshit from some of the people she knew back home. If they had an inkling of what real kids were like, let alone HER, they'd be changing their tune but quick.

"Thanks. Gotta hold onto something while we're on the floating mommy ship, right?"

Her lip trembled. "B-but I'm afraid of needles. It'll hurt!"

Wait for it...

Howard rolls his eyes at her. "First things first, tough deal. You put up with needles." No cutesy eyes on him, Mindy. His soul is too black and shriveled to fall for that crap. Besides, he knows all about the non-pwecious parts of kids.

"Second things second, it's a blood pressure cuff. Needles come later, for the cultures." He wraps it around her upper arm and starts to inflate it.

Mindy snickered. "I'm just fucking with you. I don't care about needles. It'd be kinda pathetic if I did though, don't you think? With all the near death experiences and attacks by robots, and I'm scared of a sterilized sharp thing that will last all of seven seconds."

It was pretty dumb when you thought about it.

She extended her arm for the cuff. "Go ahead."

"You'd be surprised how many people throw a fit over needles around here. You'd think we'd have better priorities, I mean, seriously." He puffs up the cuff and holds the stethoscope over the crook over her elbow, then writes a number down on the form. "You're a bit high for a kid."

"Like I said, there are a lot more important things to worry about than getting picked by something sharp," she said. Oh right, blood pressure. "I manage a cafe: it tends to get pretty involved, and I have to cook a lot. Maybe that's the cause."

Or maybe that's complete crap she's saying until the physical examination happens.

Howard gives her a 'do you think I'm that stupid?' look. "Girl, you got to get better at your bullshit. No one's blood pressure shoots up that high just by managing a cafe. Don't be dumb."

He gets the little flashlight out. "Okay, eyes, ears and mouth. Open up."

"In that case give me a minute to come up with a better bullshit explanation," Mindy shot back, not being able to help but smile. Thank god it was Howard: if she'd had a friend back home, she'd prefer it to be someone like him. But they would get to the real culprit of her blood pressure later.

She opened her mouth willingly. At least dad had made sure she kept good hygiene.

Howard peeks in. "Did you ever have your teeth broken or something?"

Have her teeth broken? Well, chipped at the most. No one actually had broken any yet, and if it ever DID happen...well, they would be losing appendages accordingly, assuming she let them live.

"Nah, just a chip or two," she said. "Pretty good about keeping them intact."

"One of them back there's chipped. How'd that happen?" Howard moves over to check inside her ears with the flashlight.

Mindy wracked her brain. "Bike spill when dad took the training wheels off. Guess I wasn't as ready as I thought, you know? Hit the curb pretty hard."

Granted, she actually DID do that, but it had nothing to do with a chipped tooth. No, that belonged exclusively to a very dead Frank D'Amico.

Howard squints into his little ear-checker-thingery. "You have scarring on the inside of your ears. Do you shoot guns?"

"Scarring on the inside of..." Shit. "No, dad does...did, whatever. But I'd go with him to the shooting range, and even when he wasn't, he'd hunt. You can't wear headphones all the time."

"Your dad fires rifles right next to your head?" Howard waves his hand about a food next to Mindy's head, approximating about where the gun would have to be.

"Yes?" Mindy said, sighing. "Look, its not that important, with the gun thing is it? I mean, its not gonna hurt me in the long run or anything, dad's not on the ship. What else do we have to check on?"

"I'm just noting anything weird I come across, is all." Howard checks her eyes. He walks around to behind her. "Okay, I promise I'm not a creep or anything, and if you'd rather have Sakura do this that's fine, but I need you to lift up the back of your shirt."

And this was where things weren't going to really be able to be covered up at all. Aside from Howard, she didn't want ANYONE to know what was going on, and at least this Howard guy didn't seem like a blabbermouth.

"I'm not that shy," she said, but of course, it wasn't the naked back that had bothered her at all. No, it was, when lifting the shirt, the set of scrapes and faded scars that were present there. One was recent acquired from the robot attack, and there were fading bruises from the Overlord's wrath.

She leads an active lifestyle?

"...Whoa."

Howard uses his stethoscope to listen to her lungs. It's a courtesy. He's giving her enough time to think up a watertight excuse. "Breathe deep."

Yeah, that was just about the reaction she was expecting. She could probably come up with some lie about this, but honestly, there had been a reason she chose Howard. She could be honest by being vague, and that was just about all he would need, right?

She did what he asked for the moment though, breathing in to see how her lungs were working.
