Archaeology, Natural Disasters and You [Closed]

The trip down revealed that Taleen was going to be of several things, none of which were pleasant. Arid, pale with a light dusting of red from the rocks, and yellow-white grass that extended in plains all the way towards far off mountains . There was a giant gash in the land near the orb landing area, which resolved itself into a massive canyon as the party drew closer. Spider webbing out across the top of the canyon were signs that a civilization had once flourished here. Traces of broken pillars and half submerged buildings, as well as what looked like a downed ship that had embedded itself in a massive building. There was no movement visible amongst the ruins now. As the dry wind blew through the stonework, it would became clear that they were walking into a mass graveyard.

Not somewhere you'd want to spend your vacation.

For some people, this was going to be a field day.

According to the scans and what little records they had, there hasn't been a sentient being around for hundreds of years. The majority of native wildlife had moved out of the area, seeking refuge. The land looked dead already. In the sky above, several specks of light twinkled in the sky, growing bigger with each passing hour. In a few days, it will be raining fire.

He raises an eyebrow at her. He's had people point out his less desirable character traits plenty of times, but 'uptight' doesn't come up often. "You were here to offer your aid by going on about how you rock at poleaxes?"

"I suppose in a way, yes. If you wanted me to move something for you or to take you anywhere, I could be of service. Archeology is still a concept new to me, I would rather watch than participate full for now."

She pointed to some mountains far away from them.

"I could take us there if you'd like a better vintage point."

He squints at the mountains in the distance. "How do you mean take us there? You mean like boom, teleport? Are you going to call up Falkor?"

"Well I can-" she stopped mid-sentence, regarding him curiously. "Who is Falkor?"

"Do they not have the 80's in your magical kingdom?"

"80's what exactly?"

Gee thanks for confusing her even more, bro.

"80's fashion and movies, duh."

This conversation will go nowhere fast, but Howard likes that it's now Sofia asking the questions and being off-balance.

"I know nothing of these 80's fashions. And movies are a concept I know because of my stay on the ship." Really, we're talking hidden village girl. "You could perhaps enlighten me on the subject later."

"Maybe. But don't expect me to buy you dinner beforehand." He glances back at those mountains. "Not sure I want to leave the site, actually. We'd mostly see the big structures, and no offense but I got no interest in hauling those back to ship, even if you could lift them."

Now you're just speaking another language. "Where I come from, the food is shared between all of us. I don't see why you'd have to buy me dinner, considering there is more than sufficient food on board."

"Big structures have a tenancy to hide some of the more integrate treasures that their architects want to keep hidden." She would know, she's done a lot of that back at home and all the dungeons. "There doesn't seem to be as many enemies hidden in them as in my world either."

That just gets a glare out of Howard. "Well, good for you. It's not always like that with food."

He considers that, rubbing his fingertips together. "What kind of treasures? Magic? Because gold and jewels aren't much use on Stacy."

"I know," she replied back, not at all offended. "There were winters that were quite harsh with our supplies."

She looks over to the hills.

"I would not know, but in my world, caverns hid a lot of artifacts, both magical and healing. Sometimes left by other travelers to aid the ones later. Sometimes, probably monsters hording away their hard-earned treasure. I am quite unsure what this world could offer."

"That's stupid. Why hide stuff you might need later for someone who probably will never pay you back? You'd get more use out of burning it for firewood than leaving it laying out."

The idea of hoarding perks him up a bit, but the idea of monsters, not so much. "You heard there's wild animals in the woods, right?"

"I suppose it might sound strange, but traveling around the world were I used to come from, it is sort of a way for merchants to survive going from one place to another." Adventurers were weird, what could she say.

"Is there?" she asks, not sure if he thinks she knows about them, or simply thinking that her statement meant she thought there were monsters there. "I can easily deal with them, if need be."

"They just go out on blind faith that someone will have left goodies out for them? That the dumbest thing I've ever heard." Howard gives Sofia a masterful eyebrow raise.

"You sound pretty confident. What if these wild animals shoot acid?"
