Sleep Is Good

After everything that happened, Negi was finally running out of gas.

Stumbling into the Masaki Household, he barely made it to the living room as he fell over, clutching a throw pillow as he grumbled. Chamo and Barry were already in the corner sleeping as his pactio cards spilled out all over the floor.

Sleep time was good.

Aqua was running on her last Curaga spell of the battle, trembling slightly from the overuse of magic. She was just as ready to sleep as Negi was, though she wanted something to drink before going to bed.

She took out a box of different flavored hot cocoa powders she'd managed to get during shore leave and began to heat some water. She'd filled a cup with peppermint cocoa when she saw Negi stumble in. Deciding he could use it too, she refilled her kettle and gently walked over to him.

"Do you want some hot chocolate before you fall asleep? It might at least get you as far as the couch."

"Mmmghh," replied Negi, waving his arm. "I would like that a lot..."

He was really tired after burning all of his magic, and he leaned down against the pillow. "I need something to warm myself too I'll bet."

"That's probably for the best," Aqua agreed, going over to get a second cup. "What flavor? I have regular, peppermint, caramel, and raspberry."

"Peppermint would be nice," replied Negi with a groggy sounding noise.

Aqua poured another packet of peppermint cocoa into a cup and added water before stirring it. Then, grabbing two blankets, she came over to sit by Negi with their cocoa.

"Here, this should warm us up."

With a sharp groan, he sat up fully, accepting his cocoa as he leaned up against Aqua. "Thanks," he said with a light sigh, sipping it.

Aqua spread out one of the blankets over him while keeping the other for herself.

"It was a hard fight out there. We all need our rest."

"I know. I was running on a lot of high levels of power." He yawned. "I'm... surprised I hadn't passed out yet..."

Aqua smiled. "Sounds like you're almost there, though."

"Just about," yawned Negi, sipping a little hot chocolate, letting it warm his body all the way through. "I'm really running on empty."

"That's because you used so much of your power," Aqua said. She'd noticed it immediately--all of her years of training made it obvious to her. "You've got a lot of power, but you need to be sure you don't throw all of it out there. Keep some in reserve, or you'll feel it later."

Negi chuckled at that as he continued to sip his chocolate. "I guess so. The others always said that I'm bad at expending all my power in a single go..."

"That's one of the things about mastering your powers so young," Aqua said, nodding. "It always feels like there are lessons you should have learned."

"I hear that. There's some days I wish I was still behind a desk to be honest," admitted Negi.

"And I wish I were still training instead of being a Master," Aqua confessed. "But if we're adult enough to be trusted like this, we have to learn from our mistakes."

"Yeah. We just grew up really fast I suppose." His head dipped and he almost fell asleep, but snapped awake just in time so he wouldn't fall into his drink.

Aqua held back a laugh and took his cup. "I'd better take that before you spill it. Try and get onto the couch, at least."

Negi nodded, already spaced to hell as he leaned over and with a plop, fell into Aqua's lap.

Aqua was surprised at how quickly he collapsed on her, but she soon smiled. It was a lot like when Ven fell asleep on them after a long day of training.

She picked him up and placed him on the couch, putting the blanket over him.
