Lirath - Ground Battle

After dropping off some of the crew at Balisair, it was time for the crew to set course for Lirath. The situation greeting them wasn't the most promising.

The cracked surface of the moon called Lirath was one of its most unmistakeable features. One of the three moons of the planet Kehoe, it had been terraformed and served as a settlement for a hundreds of different species, some humanoid, some not. Despite occasional class struggles, environmental issues, and speciesism blocking their way, the darker parts of Lirath's past were largely left behind, and an era of peace and tolerance had reigned for quite some time. The only problems they'd had recently were with a terrorist group whose cause for their actions had been a mystery, but they weren't tied to any particular species or social group and had been likened to a cult and had largely gone quiet in recent years.

Now the peace on the moon of Lirath had been shattered by the invasion of the Ohm.

The capital city had been destroyed. Now, all that was left of the peoples of Lirath was evacuating from one of its smaller cities, one known as Smyteval. A desert city, existing in a valley in between a rocky range of canyons and mountains, even though it was in the low ground, the natural channels of rock served as bottlenecks for any Ohm attacking from the ground.

GIA squadrons patrolled in space, locked in explosive warfare, protecting the Bleed-gate that had been activated to see the evacuated ships to the refugee world, and a shield created by massively-powerful shield generators extended around the city and up into the atmosphere, creating a shielded tunnel so ships could escape.

Word had come that there was a vital weapon to be deployed on Lirath, one that needed to be destroyed, hence why the Transmigration 9 had been called in. Given the diverse crew, and the ships that were in its hangar, there was at least someone or something on board that could blow the weapon up if it did show.

There was no sign of it yet. Right now, there was just chaos, streams of evacuees boarding ships, armies of Ohm engaged with GIA soldiers outside the shields, and forcefields that everyone hoped would hold out just a little bit longer.

The crew would be following Leon's orders but finding themselves fighting side-by-side with GIA platoons, full of various species that were currently all getting their asses kicked severely.

"Not going to happen!" Kaya called out, and she started to move in closer, starting to use her speed to aid her now. She took some more shots at some of the advancing Grunts, then aimed a few more shots at the Grenadiers. the more she thought about it though, the more it began to stay a question.

She drew her powers from the moon: Lirath itself WAS a moon. What would happen if she tried to bloodbend here? Would it be possible?

A torrent of Storm Bolter fire ripped into nearby Grunts as Cargn opened fire with the weapon strapped to his left wrist, the .75 caliber shells exploding on impact with Ohm flesh, tearing massive holes into each target.

"Let them take not one step further!" he called, slamming his Warding Staff into a Guard that rushed towards him, psychic energy arcing through the weapon to overload the creature's nervous system and cause its brain to explode.

"They shall claim no more from us!"

Things weren't going to be easy for the team. Not when Ohm that were out of their range of vision in various ways were moving together to hatch a counter-offensive on them.

Kaya's speed would be challenged by a group of Assassins that changed their position to target her. Their venom-coated claws ready to stab and slash at her when they got close enough. Only a few were actually visible, though. As the few that remained uncloaked chased Kaya, she'd find it difficult to focus on them alone. Others who were cloaked would suddenly spring from the sidelines, trying to catch her by surprise from the side or from ahead of her. There was something else waiting to attack her, too, once she got close enough to realize it was there...

There were a number of Ohm aiming toward Clark. Firebugs that stood far away from their area of attack, firing a spray of plasma whenever they thought they had good enough aim to possibly hit him when he was occupied by something else. Said occupying would be given to them by a couple of Tanks, flanked by a number of Grunts and Assassins. The smaller units would try to swarm Clark while the Tank would attempt to use its mass to charge him, all the while while the Firebugs continued their attacks on top of them.

Bombardiers swooped down above the entire group, both crew and Ohm alike, taking more care to aim for the crew, obvious, as they sent down barrages of acid to rain down on them.

Jr. was busy with another Ether attack, once again sending the earth beneath some Guards to crack, rise and send them stumbling to knock them off guard before he'd send some variation of an elemental attack (or even a shoot of his gun enchanted with one of the elemental Ethers) flying toward them. When the Bombardiers appeared though, he knew it would be a good idea to try and get them out of the way, even though Clark could easily fly up to counter them. But that was still one out of three that could actually fly, all tricks and acrobatics aside. He changed his focus of that line of attack on the air-borne Ohm.

[identity profile] itsaboutaction.livejournal.com 2011-08-13 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"Kaya, get...!" Clark attempted to shout, mere moments before the swarm of Ohm pounced on him. They knew he was the strongest of the bunch, and what better way to destroy morale than to attack that and take it out. His arms lashed out, striking away at the Assassins and Grunts attacking him as they tried to tear into him. As the Tank charging into got close, he broke free long enough to land a powerful punch into it, just barely stopping it cold.

It's strength... it's like Doomsday's! he thought. If that were the case, then...

Straining to lift it, Clark moved to lift the Tank over his head as the Bombardiers struck, using it as cover before launching it away.

Cargn focused his psychic energy through his Warding Staff, extending the barrier that emanated from it to surround those nearest to him as the Bombardier shots rained down on them. Once the barrage subsided, he opened fire on them with his Storm Bolter, shooting several of them out of the sky, watching them fall down to crush some of the oncoming Grunts.

"Take out their air support!" he called as he continued firing.

Not more than a block away the Vindicare set himself into position atop one of the taller rooftops, using the Spy suit's inbuilt camouflage systems to remain hidden as he unlimbered his rifle. Taking in the situation on the ground not far from him, taking stock of the situation at hand and the Firebugs in the distance that seemed rather intent on the group.

Within a moment he slid first a single potent hellfire round and had the first of a pair of firebugs in his sights. The sophisticated scopes of his Exitus rifle showing the target even a few miles off. Taking a few slow breaths to steady his aim for such a shot, to take out such a large target one needed to hit the right spot or have to waste further shots in the process. Once he was sure of the shot he did not hesitate to fire.

Even while the first deadly round was in the air a second was loaded as the second snapped into sights giving a slow breath before once more the potent round was loosed upon the enemy even as the first struck home.

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
One of the Firebugs went reeling at the impact, hitting the ground and not getting back up again. One of the others followed suit, but didn't go completely down just yet. Time was bought however, so those showers of acid ceased for a little while.

The Bombardiers went down a few in number after that last attack, but few still remained in the sky, their aim now at Cargn. They circled back, diving toward him though they stayed smell enough distance away from each other to not all get hit with one attack. Another drop of acidic bombs were let down on the group, while the Tank Clark threw landed roughly on the ground. But it was back up quickly, and charging at him again.

And from beneath Kaya's feet, a Devourer Worm suddenly lurched up from right under her.

Want some air support for that air support?

Even as they shot wildly through the sky at rapid speed, someone had spotted the bombadiers plaguing the group.

"Down there! Let's clear the skies, bud."

She was going to have even less time to gather herself when the assassins started in and now the plasma rifle was a shield as she started to use it to bat them away, her muscles already aching for a fighting style that was familiar. Swords wasn't an option, there were too many long ranged enemies coming, and she could even sense that there were some she couldn't see. So there was little reason to try and play it safe and precise, at least, not an a weapon she knew wasn't her specialty.

So her hand went straight to her pouch, and she took a moment to remember the lessons taught to her: the rapid, quick movement of the Bene Gesserit, the quick, striding movement of the sword fighhter, all becoming one with her bending. She had to feel out herself in this fight, use the little water she had expertly.

And the water became a whip, quick and deadly, and Kaya was back again, coming at her enemies as if she were wielding a flail: ranged, precise, and then the quickness of the Bene Gesserit warrior woman turned into her bending again. This was just using defense to become offense in a way again, a dance she had to use to its full potential if she wanted to survive. She wove through Assasins, not going for the kill but rather working herself around them until she had them stinging, and was still somehow darting out of Bombadier fire. She was sweating bullets but she knew just the momentary loss of focus, one wrong move, and the dance would end with her dead.

Of course, no one had imagined a devourer worm shaking things up, and seeing it coming at her feet she gave a bust of speed at the last moment, darting near a barricade of rocks, breathing hard.

She had to try blood bending NOW, because if it worked, if indeed being on this moon made a difference, it would change the tide of the battle.

So she concentrated on the worm, her arms outstretched, for the moment out of its view. If this worked, she knew what she had to do next, to at least minimalize the destruction they could face.

Toothless didn't need asking twice.

He banked sharply, folding his wings tight against his body as he dove. He kept his mouth shut until the approach, his teeth retracted as he prepared the blast, the heat growing, percolating in his body--

--then the dragon opened his maw, pupils narrowed into slits, and launched a blast of superheated fire, almost plasma, once, twice, more, to explode against the Bombardiers, flaring his wings to bank sideways as they made contact and sweeping away, a satisfied smile on his scaly face.

[identity profile] daemonomicon.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Using his Warding Staff once more, Cargn continued to defend against the incoming bombardment, though such constant use of this particular power began to put a strain on him.

However, as Hiccup and Toothless thankfully lessened the enemy flyers' numbers, it freed Cargn from having to protect himself, instead focusing on attacking.

"Focus fire on the Worm!" he called, as a powerful surge of psychic electricity arced from his hand to sear the flesh of the giant creature.

[identity profile] itsaboutaction.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
With a mighty flex of his muscles, Clark tossed off his attackers, sending them flying. His costume was already showing some signs of wear, but he didn't have time to worry about that. Between the Tank and the Devourer Worm, he had to make his choices count.

For the moment, it had to be the Tank. Rushing headlong, the Kryptonian met the Tank head on, a shockwave of sorts erupting as the two collided.

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Jr. focused on saving them at least a few moment's time from more of the semi-distance incomings. The added air support was a great help as well-- and didn't he meet that dragon once before? A focused, earth-based Ether attack raised the ground, knocking a Tank upward and backward, hopefully barreling into the other Ohm-forms that trailed behind it.

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The Ohm didn't take time to focus, they simply struck. The worm Kaya aimed for had luckily not seen her, but two Assassins did. And cloaked, shrouded against the background, they moved toward her with great speed, dangerous claws prepared to strike. Still a problem on their own, but the Bombardiers that chased her from the sky now changed targets, turning themselves around to bombard Hiccup and Toothless with claws when they were close and balls of acid when they weren't.

Some Guards rolled in to give more protection to the worms and other units Cargn and Clark aimed for. As well a line of Firebugs that shot distanced plasma blasts to the two of them. The closer enemies behind their protection attacked when they saw openings. Trying to confuse and catch the fighters off guard.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-08-14 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
There was no time, not even to try and check to see if the blood bending would work. There were just too many enemies swarming them, and one false move would take her out of this. She could already sense approaching Assassins even if she couldn't see them, and blindly attacking the air wasn't going to get the trick done. So she decided to try a tactic they'd least expect, which would give HER some time: she took the water whip, dropped to her knees and solidified enough of the whip around her so anyone approaching would trip up.

It was a temporary solution to one Kaya knew she would now have to solve with her strength, as bending was no longer an option that would stay. She rolled out of her hiding place now, grabbing at the guns she'd previously discarded and fired several blasts. Any assassin coming forward would now get the brunt of her Bene Gesserit training, which aimed to incapacitate an opponent by hitting its weakest points and rendering it weakened to pick off. She went at the assassins at full gusto, using every ounce of speed she could muster, pausing only to catch her breath when she attacked again, shooting, then bending when necessary. She was getting hit all right, but she made sure to stay just out of reach of those poisoned claws.

Jalith noted the effects of his previous shots, one down, one stunned for a moment. A moment that he would use to his advantage as his sights locked on the Devourer worm that had erupted in the midst of the party. The guards rolling in to divert fire were no protection from a Vindicare's bullet. One trained to kill with but a single shot from afar. After but a moment of training his sights on the Worm he saw his chance and fired, his silenced rifle giving but a cough as it spat a high-caliber cogitator guided round, capable of piercing even Astartes power armour as if it were butter.

[identity profile] daemonomicon.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Shouting out devotional prayers in High Gothic, Cargn advanced forward, knocking aside the Guards gathering near him like they were toys with his staff, occasionally letting out a burst of fire from his Storm Bolter to make sure some of them stayed down. It wasn't long before he made his way closer to the Devourer Worm.

With a yell, he raised his staff, slamming it down against the massive creature's skin. Focusing his psychic powers through the staff, he sent a massive jolt of psychic energy surging through the beast's nervous system. Against a lesser enemy, it would have simply caused their brain to explode, but against a larger creature like the Worm, it could still cause it a massive amount of pain, throwing it off enough for someone else to strike a telling blow.

[identity profile] itsaboutaction.livejournal.com 2011-08-15 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The Guards approaching Clark wouldn't have much to worry about, his fists taking them out before they got close. They were tiring him out. That's probably what they were gunning for.

With the Tank charging in once more, Clark charged at it once more, stopping it in its tracks. This time, however, he added in his heat vision, hoping to pierce the beast's hide and give others a spot to attack it.

[identity profile] ohm-nom-nom.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
The Assassins did leap back from Kaya's attack, but now knowing an obstruction was entirely possible, they'd just try to leap at her within the last few feet, limbs long and strong enough to spring them at her. Some fell to the ground, struck where she'd aim to shoot them, but more were making their way through the rubble. And quick on their legs, some of them spotted Cargn taking care of the worm, choosing to go after him as he focused.

The Tank fought against Clark's strength, pushing back against him even as his heat-vision seared it. But it didn't give in that easily, pushing its weight as hard as it could.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2011-08-16 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
Kaya had to think fast: they were already coming at them pretty quickly, and they were making their way toward her too. At this moment she was forgetting that she was hindered by lack of water on this moon, or the fact that there wasn't even time to see if she could blood bend. She DID at least have her water satchel, and so long as she had water there, she would use t to her advantage.

She used the water whip like a flail again, only this time she solidified the water upon impact, making it more like a stream of ice, and aiming now at vulnerable parts of them. Speed drove her to gather what water broke back to her hands again, and reuse the whip again and again, beating her attackers back. When there was enough distance she brought out the plasma rifle and shot at them again, trying to drive them farther away from the others.

[identity profile] i-saw-myself.livejournal.com 2011-08-18 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
The bombadiers would find their moving target was moving a little too fast for them to catch. Several small adjustments with the foot pedal of Toothless's rig allowed for several hairpin turns that allowed the pair to dodge the blasts and then they were gone, streaking away to strike somewhere else on the battlefield.
