How long had it been since Negi could truly cut loose? It had been quite a long time and Chamo and Barry were looking out for one another.

Stepping into the sensoriums, Negi looked over at the recreation of the Gravekeeper's Palace floating overhead. He could remember most of it, from regaining his memories of the attack that ruined the magical world and earth in a simultaneous blow, but stepping forward was Fate, the pale haired boy giving him a silent look.

The pair stared at each other for a long moment, and then seconds later, exploded into energy. Fists crashed against each others cheeks in a cross-counter as they skidded backwards.

"Come, Negi. Show me your plan." intoned Fate.

Negi grinned as his form changed, invoking his most powerful ability. His hair fanned out and became a long pink swathe of hair as his body glowed in a brilliant pink light as he shot forward, Fate coming to meet him in a devastating blow. The sound of violence could DEFINITELY be heard from behind the door in the sensorium, as the pair rained blow after blow down in a dizzying volley.

Just as he'd thought, but... "Why's that? It seemed effective enough!"

"The base ability is called Magica Erebea, Black Magic. The actual technique itself is incredibly self destructive if not mastered." pointed out Negi. "And just slamming a high ancient spell into myself doesn't just work."

Black Magic? If it required an underlying spell to use... "Oh, I think I understand. Since you're relying on external energies rather than internal you need a bridging medium to convert it, is that it?"

Negi nodded. "Yeah, the spell eats away at the spirit, and can drive a user into a frenzied state at worst, at best becoming something of less than a real monster. I managed to master it a while ago, but the damage has been done."

"Dangerous indeed." He kept his tone neutral, though he wasn't going to ever claim he approved. He assumed 'lessons learned', though, and wouldn't say anything on that note. "Out of curiosity, since you're clearly proficient in martial arts, are you able to tap your internal energies at all?"

"Only the fundamentals. Back in my world, chi and magic don't work very well on the same level, since it can normally interact poorly with one another. Asuna, my student and friend from home on this ship has a S-ranked ability the same level as mine called Kanka which fuses the two energies together," explained Negi.

"They're separate?"

That explained a lot!

"No wonder you need a bridging spell, then."

Negi nodded at that. "Yeah. Only the best combat mages could do it with ease. I'm still a long ways away from it."

"What happens if you hit countermagic, though? I'd think that'd be even worse to deal with, in that form."

He shifted his shoulders a little, acutely aware of the weight of the sword on his back.

Negi shrugged. "I haven't actually seen that happen anywhere else to be honest. The ability to counter magic or negate it in an anti-magic field is only native to Asuna actually. It's an exceptionally rare power. As for any magic thrown at me, I can absorb it and turn it against the opponent. That's the real power of it. Chi, magic, whatever."

Morgan lifted one hand and made a beckoning gesture. "Toss something reasonable at me. You've got a better command of the elements than I do, clearly, so don't go overboard with this one, but I want to see what you think of this."

Negi nodded, stepping a few feet back as magic swirled into a silent incantation. "Three arrows of light!"

The triple arrow attack launched out in long streams towards Morgan.

Light? Well, he had expected lightning, but that made very little difference. He made a circling gesture with his hand, a figure eight -- or rather an taiji-- then, focused, fed a precise measure of yang into the yin of the light, dispersing the arrows.

That wasn't too far from the underpinnings of Taijiquan, by the way.

"Any practitioner of 'magick', or willworking, on my world could do that if they'd studied the proper way," he said, lowering his hand.

Negi had to applaud at that. "I see! Does it work for anti-army spells or anything bigger than a person though?"

He nodded, but qualified, "That goes back to training. I can only manipulate force on a small scale, so I couldn't really hope to counter such a large one. What I could do it perform antimagick, which makes all magic harder to perform, and thus makes those large spells more difficult and less potent. That's more costly, though."

Morgan tapped the hilt of his sword with a grin. "Of course, I can cheat."

"Ah. It would be nice to learn at least, though back home we counter force with force, and well, some of it gets really powerful. The one I specialize in, hits an area of at least a few hundred meters. When I first used it, I tested an incomplete version of it and slagged half a floating rock that stood about a hundred meters or so." said Negi, already going into professor mode, thinking about how to incorporate it into his style.

"Ah, but that's what I did. Darkness to counter light. It just didn't show, because I fed the chi directly into the arrows, rather than summoning arrows of my own." Which he... supposed he could do, but it would be awkward and not at his usual style.

"Hmm... fundamental forces don't work like that in my world. It just mixes and creates an explosion," remarked Negi. "Like you could technically counter like water with lightning or fire with ice, but it becomes moot at a certain level of power."

"That would complicate things." Philosophical differences... Truth be told, he had no real idea how to explain countermagick according to a Hermetic paradigm. Nor was he about to try any further than he had! "At that level, though, there's always Primium, if you can get your hands on it."

"It sounds like something I'd like to research into, since I enjoy that more than fighting," admitted Negi, finally depowering and that shine of pink vanishing to replace itself with normal colors. "Maybe I could give a demonstration of how big a high ancient spell works for my world?"

"Sure, and I'll give you a demonstration in turn," he said with an eager grin. "Toss it my way. THIS I can do without any more training that how to strike a decent blow."

"Ooogh, you sure? Okay."

Going through the ones he knew, and settling on a fairly basic high ancient that he could throw at the other mage because goddamn he wasn't going to throw a thousand thunderbolts at him, Negi jogged several meters away and held up a hand. Rastel. Raskil Magister!

On cue, Negi swung his arm down at him, and a powerful blast of lightning arced downwards at Morgan.

One hand on the hilt of his sword, he watched the incantation, listening to its rhythm. He didn't come anywhere close to understanding the Greek, but by its tempo and pacing, he could judge when the spell was coming.

As the lightning descended, he drew his sword and in the same motion, cut. Its dull gold blade flashed a muted reflection as the Primium weapon struck the lightning. The sword's composition was more fundamental, more real, than anything else; more real even than the magic of the spell. The blade cut the heart out of the magic, leaving nothing but aimless tatters to quickly scatter.

That was impressive, to be able to cut through a high ancient spell like that. Negi realized then he had a lot to learn. "That was quite the feat," he remarked. "I've never seen anyone do that before, even if I kept it at a fairly mid-range power. You must have had a great teacher."

"I can't take credit for that one, it's all the sword." He lightly flipped the weapon up in the air, balancing it by the point in his cupped hand. Which was fairly ludicrous considering it was a hand-and-a-half bastard sword. "The metal it's made of is probably the most incredible stuff in the universe. This was a gift to me, from a very dear friend."
