"Listening to others, considering well what they say" (Part 3: Maingate Hotel)

The Maingate Hotel was pretty extravagant, and an entire section of it had been eked out for the crew's use during their stay. They had several suites, three communal areas, a conference room, their own kitchen with a chef on call if they required her.

They were all teleported from the main teleport pad of the hotel into the conference room, which was a large enough room to be able to hold a group their size and had plenty of chairs arranged in a circular pattern so they could mostly all face each other or whoever was in the middle of the room.

Everyone had to settle down so they were all able to talk, and the meeting itself would have to be carefully controlled so they wouldn't all talk over each other. But they were up for the task, right?

"Stigma, huh? Kind of hard to believe. You look and act like an ordinary human." So much so, in fact, that it was rather difficult to tell the difference at all.

He frowned a little at Jr.'s last cryptic statement. "...history lessons? Does your world have past issues with cloned humans?"

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-06-27 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, we are humans. But the name U.R.T.V. still apparently gives people the shivers." Stupid, really, while meanwhile his father had simply come back to head the Zohar Project, being a bigger, much more dangerous threat to everyone.

"Mostly from a legal standpoint. But for us specifically, it was more because of the war we got sent into. Same thing goes for the Realians," ... and there was also that whole Miltian Conflict thing when it came to the Realians going berserk. It was the same reason the U.R.T.V.s were side-eyed. "and victims of Life Recycling sort of get the crap end of things, too."

"U.R.T.V.?" Zouichi tilted his head slightly to the side. "But it's not your fault that your father created you for the purpose he did."

"I wasn't aware that the Realians of your world attacked anyone. Was there any reason? A malfunction, perhaps? Or was it in protest?" On Zouichi's Earth, Synthetic Humans weren't really common enough to mount a wide-spanning protest. Those that were violently uncooperative would probably have never made it out of production.

"And what is Life Recycling?"

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-06-28 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
"U-DO Retro Virus, it's the reason we were made - to fight against something called U-DO back in my world. Of course, things didn't exactly go to plan, then." And oh what an understatement. Jr. always had the guilt hanging over him of what happened that night. When he found out what really would have happened if they had continued their mission.

"That was when the Realians went berserk, too. But it wasn't their fault. One of the primary organizations involved in the war had a device that made them all lose control. It's why it's illegal now, to do anything to them that could alter their personalities." Of course, the Song of Nephilim didn't just make the Realians go crazy. Leave a human within its range for long enough, and they'd end up the same way.

"Life Recycling is mostly what it sounds like. Recycling the dead and turning them into cyborgs, taking away all of their rights and registering them as weapons. 'Recycling' was also a term used to blanket clones and other kinds of genetic modifications. It's not legal to do anymore, either, but there are a whole lot of people still alive who were victims of it. The Species Preservation Act was made as a foil to it, because humans were becoming biologically weak as a result of too many Life Recycling acts. The support headquarters for it is on our Foundation, since we have a lot of people like that living there because of the discrimination they get. Of course, the law says discrimination against them is illegal, but you know how that goes."

So apparently, Jr. was a lot more like himself than Zouichi had thought. Although it sounded like something had gone seriously awry with his father's plan.

"I see. And I assume they were treated with suspicion afterward by non-Realians, even taking into account that they weren't responsible for their actions?" After all, it was only human -- fearing and hating something you didn't understand, even if it acted with no malice. "Some Synthetic Humans have preprogrammed personalities. However, the personalities of those created for work involving any delicacy, such as those of my generation, cannot be easily created out of whole cloth. So we were raised, rather than programmed. Although they did create us with certain personality biases."

"...Taking parts from dead humans? How was that ever seen as ethical? And why would they use people to create cyborgs, instead of creating wholly artificial constructs, anyway?"

Zouichi shook his head. "I think in many ways, your future was further along in its biotechnology development than mine. Most of the humans on Earth were unmodified, and there were very few clones." He hesitated. "Of course, there were also people in power who went to all kinds of lengths to preserve their lives, far beyond the length of the normal human lifespan. That's what caused the problem on my world in the first place."

"But yes, I think I understand why a Foundation like yours would be welcome. Legislation against discrimination doesn't actually prevent it from happening. It only acts to punish the perpetrator -- provided they're caught."

"Of course they were. Realian rights are still fiercely debated back home because of that incident all that time ago." He waved a hand as he spoke. Realians were everywhere, though. Especially on his ship, so at least things had ... calmed, since the war, if only slightly.

"They usually reuse people who had signed up to be organ donors and things like that." At least, that had been the case with Ziggy. "And you got me there. The same question can pretty much be applied to everything else that wasn't born the same way a human is. Are you guys still only on Earth? Because technologically we've been ... away from, it for a while, now."

Jr. couldn't help but give Zouichi a twisted smile after that, though. "Lifespan extension we've got, too. That's what dad did for who knows how long?" Along with the smile, however, Jr. felt a small twist of his stomach as he said that. Gaignun had been part of that plan.

"Hmm. All because of that one incident. Although I'm sure distrust existed beforehand. Are all Realians combat-oriented? Or are there civilians as well?"

Zouichi paused for a long moment before answering Jr.'s question; it was a bit of a complicated one to answer. "...There was a time when humans were beginning more ambitious explorations into space. For example, there was a thriving space colony on Mars... at least, until N5S drastically altered the course of scientific exploration. It wiped out all life on Mars and set some of the most influential research and development companies in the direction of harnessing the power of the virus instead, in order to pursue 'immortality'.

"If you don't mind me asking, is there some reason why you left Earth? I talked to another crew member whose version of Earth simply became too polluted and stripped of resources to continue to inhabit."

He gave Jr. a rather humorless smile at the mention of life extension. "Maybe Ildraniath is right. Living too long makes you a little... strange."

Understatement of the year.

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-06-30 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Jr. shook his head. "No, there are different Realians, like the 100-Series Observational types. Those are the ones we see a lot more of on the Durandal and on the Foundation."

He nodded along slowly, listening to Zouichi talk. All for the sake of immortality. It was why his father had done those terrible things, it had been the first of many catalysts that drove Albedo insane, even though ironically enough Albedo had wanted to die.

He wondered how he should explain it. If Zouichi was on a different version of Earth, though ... it might not be so bad. The things he spoke about were definitely not things Jr. had ever read his his story books. "Mainly? Because that's where all races in the universe tend to go, isn't it? Grow and evolve, and then spread out. But it kinda ... disappeared, after that."

[identity profile] zouichi.livejournal.com 2011-06-30 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
He nodded. "That's true of Synthetic Humans as well, although obviously I was geared toward combat."

Maybe if his own Earth hadn't essentially be doomed before he'd been picked up, Zouichi would have been a little more concerned about hearing that. "Your Earth... disappeared? How?"

[identity profile] carrieswar.livejournal.com 2011-06-30 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Probably the result of a space-time anomaly or something," he replied. "It's happened to other planets and regions and space before."

Zouichi frowned a little. "How does your society manage to survive if you need to worry about planets going missing? Do you know what causes it?"
