All Hail the Conquering Heroes! [OPEN]

((Takes place several hours after the conclusion of this))

They survived. More than that, it seemed as if they actually won; the Ohm had successfully been driven away from their location. The fight hadn't been easy, which one could easily tell just by looking at the Quarter as it docked in back in Stacy's Hangar.

It had a number of dents, dings, and scorch marks where the Ohm had made their presence felt. Thankfully, there was no obvious serious damage. Still, though every crew member who went out was coming back, one had to wonder about their condition, particularly since they sent ahead a request for medics to be on standby.

But now that the ship was fully docked, and the main hatch opened, it was time to find out.

"What? No- I mean, the touching isn't the problem," he said, turning toward her. "I just. Zoe does that, when I'm piloting. It just reminded me."

Eva spoke the same kind of body language that married people talked to each other with. He supposed she was missing her other half, too.

"Ah." She should have figured. Wash using the present tense for his wife at least means she's probably just repodded, not dead. "I'm sure she'd be impressed by you today. Unless she's like my husband and would be working herself into a panic making sure you're okay."

That surprised Wash into a laugh. "Zoe? Panic? She may get a little alarmed when her gun jams but no, she's steadier than I am. Don't... really know how she's going to feel about the uniform bit, myself. Zoe's more of the sneaky not-uniform type. But she always likes to watch me show off."

She would think the giant robot was cool in a very seventh-grade boy kind of way, but she indulged him about the dinosaurs. It would be fine.

It's good to see Wash laugh despite chill the battle's left them with. "Oh? One of those calm-under-pressure types? I wouldn't worry, it's a nice uniform. Just...bright."

"General even said at one point she wished it weren't so green, but we use what we have on hand." He shrugged. "Zoe must have worn one at some point when she fought in the war, I bet it was less flashy though."

He nudge Eva with his elbow. "So? You got to see me punch something with a giant robot. How's that for cool?"

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-05-05 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
"But green's the best color. It's the color of life. I'd consider painting my room that color except Cassie might give me hurt looks and 'inconspicuous' sighs if she comes back and I've remodeled her house," Eva says, mock-offended. "Your wife's a veteran?"

She snickers and nudges him back. "Pretty cool. I still say it needs to be wielding swords."

"She fought in the Unification War," Wash said. "With the Browncoats - the Alliance decided all the border planets needed to be Alliance. The Browncoats didn't like that idea much." It was still a little strange to have to explain things like that, but Kaylee and Jayne - and now Inara, he reminded himself - were the only people aboard who knew what he was talking about when he said 'Browncoat.'

"I guess it's not so surprising that after the Browncoats lost, Zoe and the Captain picked up Serenity and were on their crooked way."

Eva smirks, some part of her sympathizing with the stubborn underdog who wouldn't take defeat for an acceptable answer. "I can see the virtue in that. And how did you fall in?"

"They needed a pilot, I needed work. Apparently some of the other folks who freelance in the 'verse were singing my praises, and I... well, I liked the view." He grinned. Even though Zoe hadn't given him the time of day for months, it worked out in the end. "Pretty soon we got married. Mal hated it, but he came around eventually. After some shooting. And some torture. High-stress situations, you know, get people to see things in a different light."

Wash was shrugging the battle off like he shrugged off the rest of the bumps Serenity's crew ran over in the black. He'd talk to Kaylee about maybe putting the Quarter a little higher on her list.

The edge of her lip twitches just a little at the mention of torture, but she keeps smiling anyway. "Nothing like a little pressure to bring people together. My sister never got over me marrying an anglophone, but maybe if I'd dragged her into the war, run a few guerrilla raids with her, she'd have seen the light."

For the most part, Eva's already over it, with the glaring exception of the psychic wave. That'll take a few days to process. Until she has some time alone, she's just going to pretend it never happened.

"I think in the end I had more issues with the Captain than he had issues with us being married," Wash admitted. "He and Zoe fought in the war together, they go way back."

He paused for a second. "Sorry, here I am doing nothing but babbling about Zoe and I bet you're tired. Where do you live?"

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"Over at Cassie's house in The City. I usually take the train to get there," she says. "And don't bother apologizing. You've had an interesting life and I don't mind hearing about it. Although if you'd rather save it for around the water cooler I'd understand."

"All the way in the city is a long way to walk," Wash said. "Especially after the day we've just had."

With all the injuries and the damage to the Quarter, there hadn't been time to rest after the battle. Wash felt dead on his feet and he was willing to bet Eva felt the same way. "You're welcome to bunk in Serenity for the night. Shepherd's room is open."

Well, most of the rooms were open, but Mal's bunk was Mal's and Wash didn't know what the Tams might have in their room.

[identity profile] vissernone.livejournal.com 2011-05-08 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
"I'd like that. I've seen Serenity, she seems to be a sturdy little ship." And she is tired, mentally and physically. Besides, staying in the Hangar puts her closer to the tubes so she can pop on down to the Med Bay if she gets any updates on Marco.

"Great!" Wash said, brightening. "Come on, I'll show you where you can sleep. The Quarter's in Engineering's hands now anyway."

Serenity needed people to fill the rooms. She was too empty now, even with the four of them - and come to think of it, Wash hadn't seen Jayne around in weeks. Wash turned his steps toward Serenity, whistling a little. He wasn't very good at carrying a tune.
