Karen was still a little nervous around Kang, and quiet, even after spending a couple of days with him, and he couldn't really blame her. At least she wasn't terrified of him anymore, and she wasn't all that difficult to watch over. He'd even managed to find a few things to help keep her entertained in Possessions (the Fairplay memories were definitely coming in handy in this case; he wouldn't have known what type of things human children typically liked to do otherwise).

He had duties at the tavern, though, and decided to bring her along with him. She'd offered to help him out, but there really wasn't anything a child as young as her could do, so he'd handed her some paper and crayons and set her up at a table next to the bar, asking her to draw some pictures for the tavern. That way, she was occupied and out of the way, and still felt that she was doing something to help.

He made sure to keep an eye on her as he went about his usual business, checking up on her every now and then to make sure she wasn't bored.

After the battles with super kids and Ohm fleets lately, a drink is exactly what Chase needs. He's not quite sure about the kid hovering around - but hey, Chase knows Hit Girl well enough by now to know even kids around here can have their uses.

"Hey Kang, when you get the chance, still want to talk to you. And if you got whiskey and anything on the grill, that wouldn't hurt my feelings none."

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-28 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Huh... with all the food supplies we bought, we have got to find you a cook, no question. For now, yeah, whiskey will do. Got some stuff back on XaXing you ought to try some time, but til someone can make more, I'm trying not to go through it too fast. I'll bring some by for you to try out though. Anyway... if you have some time, hit us with a couple shots and grab a chair."

"Yeah, I helped do the set up for his pens for them. Will be nice to occasionally be able to get some real food, cooked or not. Howard found me some SoCo down there too. And I picked up some stuff I might be able to use for training... which is what I wanted to run by you."

He makes sure they can see the kid, but makes sure she isn't likely to be able to overhear the conversation.

"I'm about to take the next steps with the trainees. Most of it has been conditioning and testing so far. I want to start some small unit tactics work with the people who've stuck it out. Not sure how familiar you are with small unit work in your military... but most of what we did at home was commando shit. Insertion, rescue and escort, demolitions, wet work."

He pauses, considering just how much he wants to trust the Draconian. "Back home, in doing that commando stuff, my wife and my ex were our cutters... hacking security, demolitions and bomb squadding, assassinations... we all did stealth ops, but any behind-the-lines crew needs a trained cutter. Since neither of ours have woken up... I got all the materials to train a new one back on XaXing. I don't want to make a lot of noise about it, not everyone here would approve of black ops I'm sure... but with your rank, you have to know how valuable it is. I wanted to get your permission to start training a new cutter. I think, otherwise, everything in training should be above board, and just as applicable to ground pounding as black ops."

"Then I'd tell you I didn't hear a word you just said, and you'd best repeat yourself at a better time and place. Just tell me where and when." he replies casually.

"I haven't said a word about what I bought to anyone else, and I won't. Everything else should pass basic tactics - next session, everyone who has stuck around is going to start learning clock drills, and working with a sniper. Got some real promising students."

He follows by downing a couple shots worth of his own whiskey, then nods. "You know it. Most of my work was with at most a 10 man squad. I can absolutely help with the combat skills, and will be interested to see your style for bigger groups. I've been putting people through the exercises and all. I think most of them are ready to start learning more. Couple of them have been really damned dedicated to it."

Healing factors are a bitch when trying to drink for cheap. Though he sticks with whiskey, he's showing no signs of slurring or losing alertness.
"Nokosi, Ronnae, Kaya, and especially Hit Girl have been going at the training like crazy. I'm going to be working on some advanced hand to hand with all of them. They've earned it. I also told Trudy I'd get a team trained to do escort drills ASAP so we have people who know how to escort injured pilots and the like."

"Kaya's had some definite teaching, and she's a hard worker. Ronnae is a lot more comfortable in a fight than out of it. I'm going to teach her taking point position and leading a small squad and see if it helps her confidence any. Given another 4 or 5 years of work and workouts, Hit Girl might be the best of them. If my wife were here, she'd want to adopt her. Only question I have with her is if she can learn to trust a squad enough to handle teamwork."

"She and I talked some about that. It was pretty bad, especially for someone her age. If she can learn teamwork and trust though, she's got a lot of potential. I'm going to be working with her a bunch."

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
"Hoping so. So, how long has it been since you did training, and what all did you cover?"

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
"Good deal. What kind of units did you usually work with back home?"

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 05:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Engineering, huh? Yeah, combat engineers have to be badasses. I bet Jack would love to hear all about building ballistae while under fire. He did a lot the same in the corps - bridges anyway. I think he preferred rocket launchers and tiger pits to trebuchets."

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, I kinda figured. From the sound of your tower thing though, your magic is probably more versatile than ours, which can stand in for technology just fine."

[identity profile] j-y-d.livejournal.com 2011-04-29 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh, no one I know needed to memorize spells either. My kind just sort of knows the things the spirits can teach us, but we have to convince them to teach them. The will-workers and the mummy I knew were sort of the same, but they both had a better range of magic than my kind usually gets."
