In Which the Overlord Dislikes What He Sees [Open]

In roaming the ship, out of an increased sense of irritation and impatience, Zetta had discovered someplace new to him.

Most of the murals and paintings and sculptures in the place, disturbing though they might be to a mortal mind, gave the Overlord no pause whatsoever. In his thousands of years, he had seen the death of worlds, the descent into madness of some truly great minds, the greatest depravities of the Netherworlds, and Mickey in a feather boa. These 'alarming' sculptures couldn't dare disturb the mental integrity of the Overlord! Hyaaa ha ha ha ha!

...What DID shock him, though, was the statues beneath a giant head-sculpture thing. Two of them, in fact: the first an obstinate Overlord, arms crossed and looking stubborn, his back to the second; the second a woman walking away, stoic despite tears.

"What the... What the HELL is THIS crap?!" Zetta demanded of the room in general and the cosmos at large.

"It's a pity you weren't born a demon," Zetta said. "You'd have made a damn good one."

Ruffnut bit back a uncharacteristically snarky remark about childhoods being over rated. She'd had a decent one as far as she was concerned.

And as if following er train of thought there was the statue once again shifting to become little kid Ruffnut riding a sheep through the fields of Birk, unaware that a rat sized Dragon was sneaking up on them.

"Aww, its a cute lil' Ruffnut!" Hit girl said half mockingly. "And apparently there are baby dragons too?"

That was news to her. "Wish I could ride a sheep," she muttered darkly.

"What, did you think dragons just hatched fully-grown?" Zetta said. "And what the hell is so great about sheep? They stink and they're not even that good eatin'."

"Actually that's a Terrible Terror. That's as big as any of them get." But she also knew that was no reason to underestimate them. "And sheep are awesome...dumb as anything but still cool." She protested.

"What do they do?" Hit Girl asked, looking surprised. "I mean, Terrible Terror? They look like the cats of the dragon world."

Abruptly the statue shifted. Apparently it seemed inclined to show off scenes from childhood at the moment, because there's a Zetta that looks to be six years old or so (in other words, about 600 years old), standing in front of a powerful demon and regal demoness.

"Huh," Zetta said.

Ruffnut grunted acknowledging the shift, "The Terrible Terror sneaks into your house and wrecks the place looking for food to steal. It's claws and teeth are like knives and it has fire too." She explained with a fond smile remembering the last time one had latched onto her brother's face.

"So its like some kind of fucked up Wolverine," Hit Girl said, which actually was pretty scary.

"Hey, who are those guys?" Hit Girl asked about the two unknown demons.

"Mom and Dad," Zetta said simply enough. Who knew that demons had the same terms as normal humans?

"I uh...see the resemblance?" Ruffnut offered hopefully. This was the first time she realized she had no real idea about Zetta's past while he knew most of her incredibly short story.

"Not me," Hit Girl said truthfully. "Of course, I never knew that demons had parents to begin with. It'd help if you would mention them from time to time!"

Of course, the statue would shift and show a slightly off kilter picture of her mother. Hit Girl blinked, then shrugged.

"What kind of weird family reunion thing is this?" she said. "I don't know why its showing that, I never knew my mom."

"Why should I mention them? They've been dead for something like twenty-five thousand years. What, did you think demons just appeared out of nowhere? How else would we get more demons except by having kids?" Then, as the statue shifted, he added, "It's weirder imagining YOU with a mom."

"How should we know how demons are made. I never met any demons back home and She didn't have any in her world." Ruff jerked a thumb at Mindy as if he wouldn't know who she meant.

"Yeah. For all I know, some other demon juts makes more, or lays them from evil eggs or something," Hit Girl said.

She looked nonplussed, although she did feel a slight twinge at the comment. "Yeah, I guess it is huh?"

"No, we're living beings too! And we're not birds! Why would you even think that?" Zetta was completely oblivious of that twinge. Hadn't meant a damn thing to him, after all.

"Again, not sure how demons work." Ruffnut rolled her eyes.

"And you!" Ruffnut whirled on Mindy getting worked up, "What the hell is that? Of coarse you have a mom. Why wouldn't you? It'd be weird if you didn't."

"I still don't like this statue." She finished as the Statue shifted to show Ruffnut and Tuffnut fighting over a shield.

Actually, imagining a baby demon hatching out of an egg was just funny to her, not to mention Zetta's reaction, but she kept that to herself.

"Well I wouldn't be human if I didn't have a mom," she said, shrugging. "I'm just saying I don't know anything about her: she died before I even got to see her. If she was around, I might be different, I guess."

A little sad maybe, that she didn't really know anything about her.

"I dunno, watching your memories are pretty funny," she added, grinning.

"Demons... aren't that different from humans in a lot of ways," Zetta said thoughtfully.

"Vikings are better." Ruffnut retorted with really nothing to compare to.

"You guys are both really full of yourselves," Hit Girl said, laughing. "But hey, if anything, that's what it takes to make a great Overlord, right? A whole lot of boasting, and a shitload of kick ass. So the way I figure, we're all pretty awesome, right?"

Zetta looked sidelong at the girls for a long moment with a frown. Clearly, the Overlord was thinking something rather important.

But he chose to approach it indirectly.

"When this is all over, you two still wanna be my apprentices, right?"

"Well yeah why not?" Ruffnut answered without thinking about it, "Gonna see this through till the end and be my own legend."

"Well that's a stupid question," Hit Girl said. "We said we would until we became Overlord's all our own, right? No reason not to see that through."

She grinned in Ruffnut's direction. "About time you started seeing that all your own, Ruffnut."

Zetta paused a moment, then said, "If you really want to see it through, there's a good chance you'll need to sacrifice your humanity. Or at least a good chunk of it."
