Fleeting Memories [open]

It was dark in the sensoriums late at night, as a small figure sat curled up on a couch and watching the television. On it played a view as a handsome man laughed with the shorter one using the "camera". There wasn't much light in the room, but a hand dipped into the half-empty bucket of double chocolate fudge and peanut butter ice cream.

Ne ne, Kazami-kun, look at that! chirped the happy Rein on the end of the "camera".

Rein let out a strangled choking sob and she weeped, dropping her spoon and burying her face in her hands.

"K-kazami... kun..."

Thanks goodness you didn't mention the sex: Mindy would have been weirded out by that.

"But that stupid ship repodded him. I was told that back a few years, the ship would make you forget that you even knew him: can you imagine that? I'm not saying what happened to you didn't suck, but this guy, he gave you memories. They aren't going to die, or waste away, they belong to you. So if he had a say, he'd come back to you, and you'll know that in your heart...or whatever."

God, she was bad at this.

She nodded. "So I heard. Besides, think of it this way: he didn't die, he wasn't just ripped from you. It's possible that Stacy could bring him back. It's happened with some of these people here, right?"

It was hope, but sometimes that hope was fulfilled. "And hell, somebody loved you. That's pretty cool."

"Yeah," Mindy said. "So seriously, I hope you feel better about that in time. It won't go away, but you'll feel a little better in time."

She paused. "Besides...its better to have someone like you on the ship all cheerful and shit. It makes us grumpy, socially awkward people easier to deal with."
