Fleeting Memories [open]

It was dark in the sensoriums late at night, as a small figure sat curled up on a couch and watching the television. On it played a view as a handsome man laughed with the shorter one using the "camera". There wasn't much light in the room, but a hand dipped into the half-empty bucket of double chocolate fudge and peanut butter ice cream.

Ne ne, Kazami-kun, look at that! chirped the happy Rein on the end of the "camera".

Rein let out a strangled choking sob and she weeped, dropping her spoon and burying her face in her hands.

"K-kazami... kun..."

"Don't worry about it." Sonic said, hopping over to the couch and getting relaxed. "I take it you lost someone, huh?"

Rein nodded, rubbing her red eyes. "Kazami-kun. He... he was repodded. And I get the feeling I'll never see him again."

"He was The One." And with capital letters too.

Sonic let out a breath he didn't realize he was holding. It seemed like the same thing that Alessa might have went through when Shadow disappeared.

"Hey, you don't know that..." Sonic said, softly. "From what I understand, this ship is crazy. It does crazy things."

"But..." Rein had to nod at that moment. "I... yeah."

She wiped her tears and blew her nose again. "We met, the first day I was released from the pods. He didn't treat me like a child, and we got to talking. Eventually I asked him out and he said yes."

Rein curled up, holding her legs. "I loved him. So much. I told Hayate he was The One, the one I wanted to spend my life with." She hit a pillow with surprising force.

Sonic blinked as she hit the pillow. For a small girl, she hit hard! Recovering, the hedgehog tried to find the best words to console her. Knowing his luck, he'd say the wrong thing and be picking up his teeth!

"I know it's tough, but the best thing to keep doing is do what I do: keep running ahead. Nothing gets accomplished by wallowing in the past. Don't forget him, yet keep moving forward. We got a big journey ahead of us and we can't hold back because of something that happened."

Rein wiped her tears at that and nodded. "I know, and I get what you mean but it just feels hard to move on for a while. You date someone for a year or more and things like this happen."

She smiled sadly. "It just stings right now."

And this is probably why Sonic's glad he's not dating - this sort of thing happening.

"I know. And I know it'll hurt for awhile. But, in the end, it just might make you stronger." He reached over and ruffled the girl's hair. "You take as long as you need, though. You're not going to help anyone in this sort of rut!"

Rein sniffed and had to smile up at him. He was very... big brotherly, wasn't he? "T-thanks."

"Y'know, I don't think we got each others names officially," managed Rein. "I'm Rein. And you?"

Well, seeing as a lot of Sonic's companions were younger than him, it does make sense he acted this way!

"Name's Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog. I'd wish we'd met in a much better manner, but, eh..." he shrugged. "...life happens."

Rein nodded, a tiny smile appearing on her face. She hiccuped once, taking the water in front of herself and sucking down on the straw. "Yeah. I guess it helps that you came by."

Her stomach rumbled as she looked at the seemingly tasteless ice cream for now. "... I'm getting hungry. I always thought food helped ails but I guess maybe I need to actually cook something instead of binging on ice cream that had lost its taste after a while. D-do you have a recommendation?"

"Eh, unless you're in the mood for chili dogs...!" Sonic said, shrugging. He couldn't help but grin sheepishly at that.

Rein giggled softly. "After so much ice cream it sounds like a very good idea."
