It wasn't so much that he'd been slammed into a bookcase that was the problem. It hadn't even been that hard.

Okay, that was a lie, it'd been pretty hard, but the real problem was he'd also had his head slammed into a mirror, possibly against a table (that was hazy), and Jerry Stenson's fists, respectively, and while he'd had all that attended to after the mission, he'd only allowed as much fussing over him was necessary to get back on his feet again. As such, his noggin had still been a little tender when he'd been so unceremoniously slammed into a bookcase. And then, if you went even further back, he'd been concussed something fierce several times since being on the ship, and then even further back, in the fight with a giant dragon, and these things tended to be cumulative.

"Anyone in here?"

"I hit my head a little earlier. Got a head ache, and I'm feeling kind of woozy, which--given the fact I've hit my head more times and in more ways than most people even have the creativity to even think of, I was a little worried I might have hit it too hard."

He frowned.

"After the mission, they said I had a mild concussion and they fixed me up, but it was still a little tender to start with before I got slammed into a bookcase."

"Please, have a seat." James gestured to one of the beds. "I'm Dr. James Howard. Can you tell me your name?"

Hiccup climbed up onto the bed. (Oh, how he hated the beds here, especially after having been stuck in one for more than a month).

"Hiccup."

Either he really was concussed and that was paraphasia or his name was just that nonsensical.

"Hiccup?" Well, this ship was odd. He pulled out his holo charts to check for anyone with the name Hiccup. Good thing he checked, too.

"Hiccup Haddock, correct? Can you tell me where you are?"

"Medbay, on the ship."

James took out the scanner (oh yeah, that thing) and let it run the equivalent of a systems check on Hiccup's head.

"And how were you slammed into the bookcase?"

"...Magic?"

He could just be bullshitting or that could be the actual reason.

(Hint: the latter).

James spoke in the calm, even tone that soothed so many of his patients (and raiders, and scavengers, etc.) "I need to know more information so I can properly treat you. I'm not sure if you are aware of doctor-patient confidentiality. While the information of how you were injured will be on your medical record, I cannot tell anyone the information unless you allow me to. I can't discuss with anyone why you were here or what treatment you received unless they are your legal guardian. Unless someone is in danger, I cannot reveal anything we talk about here." He paused. "Now, would you like to tell me more about what happened?"

"I'm pretty sure it was magic," Hiccup repeated. "It picked me up and tossed me into a bookcase."

A pause.

"I chose a really bad time to be assertive."

"I see." James took a moment to analyze the scanner. "You have a mild concussion. I'd like you to stay here for a few hours in case it gets any worse. I'd like you do a physical examination as well. Just follow a few simple commands. Following my fingers with your eyes, walking to the other end of the room, that sort of thing. Is that all right?"

"Yeah, I think I can do that. I'm not that dizzy."
