It wasn't so much that he'd been slammed into a bookcase that was the problem. It hadn't even been that hard.
Okay, that was a lie, it'd been pretty hard, but the real problem was he'd also had his head slammed into a mirror, possibly against a table (that was hazy), and Jerry Stenson's fists, respectively, and while he'd had all that attended to after the mission, he'd only allowed as much fussing over him was necessary to get back on his feet again. As such, his noggin had still been a little tender when he'd been so unceremoniously slammed into a bookcase. And then, if you went even further back, he'd been concussed something fierce several times since being on the ship, and then even further back, in the fight with a giant dragon, and these things tended to be cumulative.
"Anyone in here?"

"Anyone in here?"

He frowned.
"After the mission, they said I had a mild concussion and they fixed me up, but it was still a little tender to start with before I got slammed into a bookcase."

"Hiccup."
Either he really was concussed and that was paraphasia or his name was just that nonsensical.
no subject
"Hiccup Haddock, correct? Can you tell me where you are?"

"And how were you slammed into the bookcase?"
no subject
He could just be bullshitting or that could be the actual reason.
(Hint: the latter).

A pause.
"I chose a really bad time to be assertive."

"What. Happened."
Sons-of-bitches voice was go.

"I'm just under observation because I hit my head again, and after getting concussed during the mission, the doctor was a little paranoid and wanted to keep me here for a few hours. He said it was only an issue because I've hit my head so many times, and did it really recently, and especially since the one time, between that and losing the leg I was out for a while, which meant that was a really bad one." He waved his hands in a gesture of finality. "That's all. Not a big deal."
Except for the part where he never told Kang he got concussed during the mission.

He snorted. "And then you expected me to keep your girlfriend occupied so that she wouldn't find out. She's going to gut you."
no subject
Seriously, Kang, he wasn't an idiot, and no he was not talking about what happened during the mission. Stop digging.
"And hey, I hit it again? And then came straight to the Medbay--despite it being my least favorite place ever. Got checked out, everything's fine, he just wants to keep an eye on me, your concern is noted and appreciated, as usual. So you don't have to bristle your scales and be all protective. Which is why I didn't want to tell you at all, because all that scale bristling can't be good for you, and I think it's safe to say I've already hit my making-Kang-worry quota."

Sighing, wings still moving somewhat restlessly, he sat down in a nearby chair. "Just let me know next time. I don't need to hear about the minor injuries, and I promise I won't coddle you. I already learned that lesson years ago. All I ask is that you let me know if something like this happens."

Smothering, Kang! You're smothering him!

Something about all this bothered him and he was having trouble putting it into words.
"I get hurt sometimes. Okay, fine, it happens. I'm not some great warrior or--or soldier, that can dodge bullets, so it happens. It's going to keep happening until I get better at this entire thing or get killed off first. It doesn't have to be a big deal every time, and while I appreciate your friendship and the fact that you've stuck by me when I was hurt really, really badly, I don't want there to be a big...to-do, every time it happens. I don't want my friends hovering over me, or worrying, or coddling me. Sometimes I just want to check into Medbay, get fixed up, and go about my business like it's not a big deal."
He finally put his finger on it.
"It's like you guys think I'm weak. Fragile. But sometimes a knock to the head is just a knock to the head. You get it fixed and go on with your day."
He threw up his hands.
"So, excuse me for just--wanting everyone to stay away while I chill out here for a few hours. I figured if I told you I was here, you'd...I don't know."
no subject
He muttered a curse. "I don't like the fact that you got hurt, but the main reason I'm pissed is because you lied to me. If you didn't want me to visit you while you were in here, you could have said so, and I wouldn't have argued."
no subject
Pfft, he was so fail.
Or...was he?
Because in all this, the subject of how he got hurt again never came up, and that was what he wanted all along.
"I'm sorry I lied. I just didn't want anyone to fuss. I'll be fine."
He settled back against his pillows.
"And next time I'll just be honest, okay?"
Problem solved, no questions, carry on.

If Hiccup really thought that question wasn't going to get asked...
