Winter Wonderland: Southern Tribe Style

She thought it would be impossible at first: the idea of keeping the area around the Outsider's hotel that cold, and keeping snow on the ground with just the use of water? It sounded crazy, and Katara had been wondered if she was skilled enough to do it. It was why she and Sokka hadn't had their Southern Water Tribe thing: it would have just been re-imagined in the Sensorium, and in a way that was almost cheating. The real experience, ice cold water and all, needed to be had, and there were certainly enough people on Trans 9 who could have used a little playtime.

That was, of course, before she had time to think. In time, she was beginning to see that where she had failed was really in her own confidence level: she could see her limitations, and didn't go further than what she could do. The longer she did that though, was more time she realized she had to be trained in other ways, if water wasn't available. It was hard to think about, but she had to be ruthless in her ability to be able to take down a person if she needed. This kind of fighting, though, felt much like murder. So after the Yeerk incident, she made a promise to never raise a hand against a person in that way, like her anger towards Jet or Zuko in the past. To do that would edge closer to that place, and she needed to remember the true goal: standing against the Ohm.

That said, she learned a great deal of other things, like how to super extend her breath, how to manipulate her body much more than she had before, and how to strengthen your feel of "wave" so much your arms were hardly ever tired. Now she found that this was possible, all that was needed was the water. With Stacey's approval, this happened.

And so Katara got to work, bobbing and weaving, guiding the water to solid water, using force to create that into powdered snow. It was work that would have severely diminished her in the past, but now it was simply a joy to be bending again, to have her element all around her instead of just contained in a small pouch, and she let loose. The snow was an interesting sensation, it was like shaping ice and then shaking it between her fingers: it littered the ground all around the Outsider's backspace, and she was glad that they had that backspace to begin with. She figured that once this was over, the water would bee used for the sauna, so she figured one last bit of fun would be a good thing.

"Okay!" She said after awhile, looking around her. "Now hopefully people will come!"

"When its love why wouldn't I?" Katara said, glaring, but actually feeling a little amused, she couldn't help it. She and the Overlord were so very different, yet they were still able to talk and laugh. "It's not my fault you swear off all the good thing just to laugh and be all Overlordy!"

"You have a really weird definition of good if you think love beats laughing and being Overlordy," Zetta said proudly. HE had his priorities straight after all. "Why the hell would anyone want to sit around being all looooooooovey when there's a huge universe out there just waiting to be dominated?"

"Some people like to have connections with others, and its a lot better than going around and organizing everyone. Besides, dominating stuff is not my idea of fun, not when I could have meaningful time with someone, thank you!"

"Hmph. Overrated," Zetta snorted. "What good are people? There's no room for that sort of thing in the life of an Overlord! All I have are those not quite as strong as me, and those much weaker than me!"

"Well I happen to try to like people, whether they're stronger or weaker than I am. I don't know how it is for an Overlord, but there are some people that mean something different than others, that's all. Certain people are just...special."

"Ha! The only person that's special is the person stronger than me! And that's no one!"

The only real question is: is Zetta lying, or that self-delusional? Because he proved his own statement false even as he spoke, just by virtue of doing it.

Katara rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say Overlord. One day, somebody WILL catch your interest, and then you'll know what I'm talking about."

"Hmph! It'll never happen!" The book adopted a distant, haughty look. "I've had girls fling themselves at my feet before, professing their undying love. Not for THIS Overlord!"

Though his expression cracks just a bit at the memory.

"No, of course not. When it happens to you, you'll be the one feeling it, not just hers. And don't you act like its never happened either: I can tell you're not telling me something. I was trained by my teacher to notice these things."

"Th-there's nothing to notice!" Zetta sputtered, crappy as usual at lying.

"Oh come on," Katara said, looking surprisingly smug at Overlord Zetta. "I'm an idealist, not naive. You must have had someone special back in you world!"

"No I didn't! There was never anyone! I'm an Overlord! I only have rivals! And apprentices! Who didn't confess their love to me!"

It's easy to imagine Zetta quite literally just digging himself in deeper. He might as well have a shovel.

"Oh sure, and you didn't give yourself away at all," Katara teased. "Overlord's don't believe in love my butt! So who was she?"

"There wasn't anyone!" Zetta was working himself into the one of those indignant squawkings, where his voice was about an octave higher. "Salome confessed her love to me! I didn't want anything to do with that crap!"

"So Salome was her name huh?" Hey, he got to tease her enough, it was only right that she was able to do the same when she had the chance. "She sounds pretty nice! What was she like? Was she your old apprentice?"

"She isn't anything! She's dead to me! She left of her own free will!"

Only one of those was the truth, and a crooked truth it is. Also, congratulations, Katara: Zetta hasn't been this flustered in his entire time aboard the ship.

"So what you're saying is that she left you for some reason and it made you upset. Well that's understandable. Even if you're evil and all that, if someone you take the time to train goes away, it still stings a little."

Not that she expected him to admit that.

"Salome doesn't matter! She has nothing to do with anything! I prefer to be alone anyway! I'm an Overlord! I don't have TIME for things like that!"

Katara chuckled. "Oh come on Overlord Zetta, you're a book! Aside from training your students and figuring out a way to get your body back, what would you have time for?"

"Overlord... badass.... things!" Swing and a miss, Zetta. "If I HAD my body back, maybe I'd have some fun on the ship, but that's all it would be! Fun!"

Katara shook her head. "Whatever you say. I still think if you had your body, you might look for this former apprentice of yours, if only to see who she was doing."

"S-she's an Overlord now! If I went looking for her, it would be to defeat her! Not that she would even be a challenge to me! She wouldn't even be worth a booty call any more!"

...yes, the Overlord just said 'booty call'.

"Oh, so you're saying she done well for herself thanks to you! Well, I think you might miss her then! When you restore the worlds, why don't you go and see her sometime. You guys can catch up."

Again, using selective hearing. Boot call indeed.

"Maybe I won't let anyone wish her back, so people could stop--"

The Overlord stopped talking in the middle of his sentence, a look of horror slowly growing on his face as something he hadn't thought about. Something he'd worked hard NOT to think about.

Salome was dead.

The Ohm had killed her right along with everyone else.

"She's not important," he said, flatly. "She was just a girl. What matters is kicking the Ohm's ass. What matters is kicking the crap out of them."

Katara had noticed the look on his face: how could she not? He might have realized something he hadn't thought of before, and whatever that might be, she knew enough not to continue to make fun of the Overlord involving that girl Salome.

"Showing foresight isn't like you," she said, but is clearly teasing. But you're right. The major thing is taking care of the Ohm, whether we want to or not. Otherwise we're just sitting ducks."
