Second Life -- Welcome to Fairplay [Stage 1]

It had been the usual mission briefing, not that any of them remembered it. The crew knew they were gone and had no idea when they'd be back, and likely wouldn't attempt rescue for quite some time, especially with Stacy considering the mission "ongoing."

They had no idea when they'd be back, either, namely because they never remembered being on the ship in the first place.

It was home. It had always been home.

Welcome to Fairplay, Iowa, folks, happiest little town in the Midwest.

"So cold, so very, very cold." Peter muttered, as he entered, rubbing his arms for warmth.

"Hey Nanoha, please tell me you've got warm fudge brownies." he said, barely registering Corrine's presence.

"If you insist," Nanoha agreed after a moment's pause. "There's nothing wrong with being here though, is there?"

And then she looked up as the bell above the door signified a new customer - one she recognized. "Oh, Peter! I think Mom has some in the oven right about now. Can you wait five minutes?"

Corinne shook her head quickly. No, there wasn't, but...

"I need to be sure that I don't overindulge," she admitted, stepping off to the side to await her order.

Ah---there was Peter Pyro. Wasn't Nanoha worried that he was going to burn down the bakery? She flashed him a strained smile, because it wouldn't be becoming of a cheerleader to openly shun someone.

"It was cold out there, wasn't it?" she asked. She was a little suspicious. A little.

"You're a saint Nanoha." Peter replied to the first question..

"Yeah, well, middle of Dec- Hang on. Cheerleader. Talking to me. Don't you guys generally ignore my existence at best and run away screaming at worst?" He said, a little bitterly.

Uh-oh. This didn't seem good. Nanoha excused herself as she ducked into the back room with the ovens to check on the baked goods - this felt like something she shouldn't be watching.

Corinne watched Nanoha go, drawing in a sharp breath. This was trouble.

"Yes..." was all she could say. The energy to tell him to scram wasn't quite there tonight---no one would believe him, but what if he blabbed? "But I shouldn't leave without what I paid for, and I'm not..."

Not cruel? Well, isn't that what she's supposed to say?

"...afraid," she finished oddly.

"If you weren't at least a little afraid of me, you wouldn't be suspicious." Peter pointed out. "And trust me, I learned to pick up on that kinda thing a long time ago."

His voice took on a serious tone, with a note pleading buried deep within it. "You can't tell anyone I was here, by the way. I mean, I don't really care what your friends think about me, but I will not let the Takamachi's bakery suffer just because they're some of the few people in this town that don't treat me like crap."

Corinne felt a surge of guilt. Yes, she felt this way. She was supposed to act this way. But no one else was watching her now, it was just her own conscience, and she had her own reputation to worry about...

"I won't tell anyone," she agreed easily, perhaps more subdued than expected, "if you do not tell them that I was here either."

That lack of word-of-mouth was sad for the Takamachis, but the town was small enough that people knew where to shop anyway.
