Heavens On Fire [Open]
Setsuna had stayed, and once again observed the training session of Starfighter Command, but declined to participate. While he had taken time to observe everyone's performance, and had his red Haro record the entire exercise, his attention had been mostly focused on Blade Squad. No surprise there, since they were mobile suit pilots. Like himself.
No. Not like me, he thought to himself.
He was on the bridge of the simulated Quarter right now, and had commandeered one of the various consoles. His Haro was connected to one of them, and was playing back part of Blade Squad's performance in the exercise.
As a team, they did fine, though something was missing in the way they operated. What that was, however, was something Setsuna couldn't quite put his finger on. Perhaps it was just this false environment they were in.
Still, something about this didn't sit right with him, so he reviewed the footage, and largely ignored the goings on around him. Maybe if he watched it long enough, he'd be able to figure out
((Free threading, mostly for Starfighter Command pilots, but everyone is welcome. See the ooc post here.))

His eyes widened as he saw the knee coming. To Kira's credit, though, his reaction time was inhumanly fast - even as Setsuna's suit aimed a kick at the railgun on his hip, sending him spinning, the other railgun was already folding out for a point-blank shot from the hip. Literally.
Whether it hit or not, Kira engaged the thrusters at maximum velocity, clenching his muscles against the G-forces as he put some difference between the two of them.
no subject
It hit on the outside of his suit's thigh. It was enough to force him to back off momentarily, but no sooner than had Kira peeled of, Setsuna was in full pursuit. He switched his swords into rifle mode, and started firing after Kira.
"If that's what you believe, then all the power in the world means nothing! You'll never change anything!"
no subject
"That's wrong, too! My power lets me change things, but that isn't all! None of us can just change something on our own!"
no subject
Setsuna didn't know what surprised him more. Suddenly having all of the DRAGOONS to deal with, or what Kira just said. Against that much firepower, though, he was forced to back off, keep some distance, and play defense. He started weaving and circling around the Strike Freedom, trying to avoid getting surrounded and sandwiched by the DRAGOONS, and looked for an opening.
"You actually believe that?"
Look, a line of dialogue that didn't end with an exclamation point.no subject
Time to take this into Full Burst. He fired.
Taste the rainbow, Setsuna.

He put a GN field, but he knew there was no way it was going to hold up against that kind of barrage for long.
"Haro!"
"DEPLOYING MISSILES! DEPLOYING MISSILES!"
The missile launchers on the 0 Raiser opened up, and eight GN-micro-missiles were fired off, followed by another wave of eight, then a third. All of them were guided missiles, most of which were targeting the DRAGOONs, but a few were headed for Kira.
no subject
The DRAGOONs docked home on his wings, and he engaged the reverse thrusters, flying away from the missiles to buy some time even as he took aim with both beam rifles. He couldn't afford to lose his drones, but if this meant the salvo was all headed for him, then he had an easy way of getting rid of them.
He fired with the beam rifles and the particle cannon, sweeping an arc across space, detonating as many of the projectiles as he could.
no subject
But if he was shooting at the missiles, that meant he wasn't shooting at Setsuna.
All the missiles went up in a series of bright explosions, but through the blasts, the 00 Raiser came rocketing right through.
He fired off several shots from one of his swords as he approached, the other still in blade mode, about to strike.
no subject
He drew his sword again, jetting in the direction of Setsuna's non-blade side. If the other pilot wanted to slash him, he'd have to turn to follow - and in the meantime that might leave him open for Kira to get a good cut in at one of his guns to disarm him.
no subject
This is Setsuna F. Seiei; there is no such thing as a non-blade side. He didn't switch the gun back into sword mode, instead going for the third mode, Beam Saber.
With the tap of a button, a sustained, pointed beam came out of the barrel of the rifle. With the longer reach on it, he was already in range, and slashed at the Strike Freedom.
That suit didn't need two arms, as far as Setsuna was concerned.
no subject
You could have two of them.
The other beam shield flared up to block Setsuna's strike and protect the Freedom's other arm, but this time, Kira didn't counterattack right away. No, he wanted to see what Setsuna would do next. With two beam shields, he could protect himself from both sides... and he didn't need the Freedom's hands to counterattack.
no subject
Setsuna didn't back off, but he didn't try to press his attack much further. He remained with his blades against Kira's shields, still turning over Kira's comments from earlier in his mind.
"Your power. Your sword. Your shield. A Gundam is a tool that you need to forge whatever future you want."
no subject
Of course, even with both arms otherwise engaged... he still had the particle cannon in the suit's chest. See that cannon? It's sparking to life, Setsuna. Might want to get out of there quick.
"...But none of us can bring about true change with just pure power alone!"
Kira fired. Even at this point blank range, he was angled just precisely so that the shot would hit high, taking off the other mobile suit's main cameras but avoiding the cockpit.
no subject
There was a bright flash, but no impact, no explosion, no debris... and no 00 Raiser anywhere in sight. Just a bright mess of GN particles.
"Then without your suit", Setsuna's voice suddenly came across the comms, "you're nothing. Which is all the more reason you should never have it."
But where was-- oh, wait, he's--- how'd he get over there? And what's that bright light?
no subject
He gripped the controls, bracing himself for something new - he hadn't seen anything like this from the other pilot before. But he could argue back. "That's not true! Without someone to wield it well, a sword is useless."
"Other people have strengths that are different from mine, that I'll never have! Those other people can help me change things - and I'll lend them this strength to make it happen!"
Whatever Setsuna was up to, he'd be ready. The DRAGOONs launched again, ready to create a hopefully-impenetrable field of fire the moment the other pilot was in range.
no subject
Oh, he was already in range, and closing in at a speed of holy shit.
"A sword is a meaningless tool, something that can be handled by anyone. Gundam has a purpose, a meaning to its existence!"
((New Music to fight by))

If he didn't do something, then at this rate...

Kira exhaled, letting his body relax for one crucial moment, and the familiar light burst behind his eyes. Suddenly, the world around him became infinitely sharper and more clear - and though Setsuna was still moving blindingly fast, he wasn't too fast to react to anymore.
The Freedom's full arsenal swung to bear.
no subject
"The meaning to my existence... to our existence... is us!"
Another full burst salvo. This time, the DRAGOONs didn't stop after just one shot, swarming around Setsuna with a maze of laser fire.
no subject
Setsuna's voice suddenly cut through the sound of the battle, and right into Kira's mind.
The eradication of war through force. To accept that contradiction, to fight for peace in the most literal sense, is what it means to be part of Celestial Being
It wasn't just straight ahead speed that he had. His Gundam moved from left to right, changing direction so quickly and so sharply, one had to wonder how the G-forces didn't reduce his insides to liquid.
He managed to weave in close, but had to back off as the field of fire became so narrow he might not have been able to dodge. He dropped down sharply, then aimed up and fired off a particle beam that covered a wide enough area such that a few of the DRAGOON's were in its path.
His speed wasn't the only thing that was increased at the moment.
no subject
Another flash as Setsuna unleashed his blast - and while Kira was able to maneuver two of the DRAGOONs out of the way of the shot, a third was destroyed. He gritted his teeth again - he couldn't afford to just lose them like that.
This power... what was this power? Why hadn't he used it before? Was it on a time limit? Could he hope to outlast it and stay alive?
Kira fired again, trying to box Setsuna into a square he couldn't dodge from.
no subject
Setsuna could see that Kira was trying to box him in, and strangely, he made no attempt to break out of it. Instead, he moved through the field of fire, evading and dodging while advancing on the Strike Freedom, swords at the ready, and advancing on the point where he wouldn't be able to dodge anymore.
Those who are on the front lines, who have the will, the determination, the audacity, and the power within them to change the world; those who fight for a world free of all war, to cut out the darkness and twistedness that lies in the heart of a flawed society, who fight to tear apart that which doesn't work, who fight to clear a path so that all humanity can reform itself; and who do it not for the sake of gathering power for themselves, for their country, or for a God who doesn't exist, but for the sake of their own souls, and for the future we all share... They are the Gundam Meisters.
no subject
Don't most people fight for that? Nobody wants to fight and kill and die... noone fights a war because they want to fight a war! What makes you think you're special like that?
The only thing that separates us from them is the power we hold in our hands!
no subject
The personification of that ideal, the physical embodiment of the eradication of war, that is Gundam.
Setsuna made his plan painfully obvious. He stopped trying to dodge as he got closer, and pointed his sword straight at the cockpit of the Strike Freedom, and he was making a beeline right towards it. He started taking several hits to his suit on the way, but powered right through each, not slowing down at all.
Either you or him, Kira. One of you isn't walking away from this alive.
no subject
A suicide charge? Kira'd seen that before. He'd done that before - he'd have to time this just right. But if there was one advantage his SEED gave him, it was perfect timing. Setsuna came closer, closer, impossibly fast...
...the Freedom juked hard to the side, cutting it so close that Setsuna's sword actually cut into the chest armor as he passed (rather than an impaling blow). Kira used the opportunity to slice down at the other mobile suit, at one of those strange glowing engines - hoping to take it clean off.
