A Really Bad Week

There was something different about the tavern. Typically, the mood in it was cheerful, almost homey; for the past few days, however, it had been... solemn.

It could have been blamed on a number of things. Because of the recent strike against GLaDOS, people were remembering those that had been repodded, and Hisk, the previous helper, was among that group. Kawalsky, Cassie, and two of the people in the pods had been killed. And lastly, though it was public knowledge by that point that Hiccup and Rose had been hurt, it wasn't yet known exactly what had happened or how bad it was.

Kang knew, though.

All of that combined equaled a somewhat mopey draconian behind the bar.

Kang looked down at the wood of the bar, "It burst out of Hiccup's stomach. I was there. I saw it. He survived the immediate surgery, but it caused internal damage that puts him in a very delicate situation."

Zuko takes the news standing up, at least.

Still, his already pale face goes a little more wan, and he leans most of his weight on the bartop.

"Will you . . . when . . . if he recovers enough to have visitors . . . how long, do you think?"

He really doesn't know where to begin with this.

"You can visit now. He's just not conscious," Kang shook his head. "He... doesn't look so good, though."

Zuko snorts.

"What's the point of visiting if he's not conscious?"

Zuko can't guilt an unconscious person into getting better soon because they're making their sifu wait, dammit.

Kang fixed Zuko with a glare, "Doesn't hurt to check on the kid, and it's not right to leave him alone."

Zuko sighs.

Well, he doesn't so much sigh as he breathes deeply. Whose patience is he trying to save, anyway?

"I . . . wouldn't have anything to say."

"You don't have to say anything," Kang shrugged. "What's your name, by the way? I don't think we've met before."

"Zuko. Prince of the Fire Nation. Hiccup is my student."

Normally he rattles off his title with more of an attempt at regality. Right now, he's too knocked off center to be prideful.

"I read your council posts. So I know who you are already. I'm sorry we're meeting under these conditions."

"Well met," Kang nodded his head respectfully. Titles didn't mean much of anything on Stacy, but that didn't mean that they should be forgotten.

"I am, too. It's never just one bad thing that happens; it's always several at once."
