Elections

The time had finally come.

The Constitution had been ratified, and campaigns had been run, and now it was time for elections to finally take place on the ship.

The Obs Deck had been set up as an impromptu voting area, relying on simple paper ballots since no one could be sure that Stacy wouldn't try to interfere if they had used a digital medium. As many hand-made voting booths as could be made for the occasion stood in the Obs Deck, waiting for everyone to come and cast their votes.

Everyone milled about Obs, either waiting or making their way from having just done so. Regardless, the air in the room was somewhat tense as everyone waited until the final vote was cast and the ship's new leadership was chosen.

[ooc: This post is just for people to get together  and talk before/after voting. To actually cast your characters' votes, go here!]

Nathan had voted. One way or another things would change once the votes were counted. He hadn't felt like this since that election night back in New York. He tried to run his campaign as best as he could, reaching out to people. Just like he had been reaching, trying to lend a hand where he could. Even if it was just being a face and a voice to the newly woken who needed a friendly face and answers. Still he couldn't help feeling some sense of accomplishment. They had a constitution, and now an election. People were coming together finally after all those early days of bickering and squabbling. He remember how Cybil struggled with the position, trying to deal as best as she could. He couldn't remember the others who had, but had a feeling, they had their own struggles.

And now they were facing their biggest challenge of all. Now that they knew what they were up against. And whoever lead, they would have to be ready.

He felt he was, and glanced around at the others milling, giving a nod and greeting to any who traded eye contact with him.

He really wished for the good old days of CNN with its charts, graphs, and polling data. Just to get an idea how the winds were turning.

After voting for captain, Euphie wasn't sure where to go next. She supposed she'd just wait here and see how things turned out, but for now she moved away from the voting boxes to leave a clear path for others.

Spying Nathan out of the corner of one eye, she turned and smiled at him. "Hello! Have you voted, Mr. Petrelli?"

Nathan nodded, and smiled back, "Hello, and yes I have. Uh, which title would you prefer again? Lady Brittania?"

She turned slightly red for a minute, and shook her head. "Oh, no, just Euphie is all right. My title has given me experience in politics, but here it doesn't really mean much of anything." She'd only mentioned it to illustrate that experience; there wasn't much point in running for the Council if she pretended to be just an ordinary high-school girl.

"Euphie it is then," Nathan remarked, still with an easy smile. "It still speaks of experience, which I think does have bearing or should on votes. Still popularity is a powerful factor in people's minds."

"I think that people will vote based on what's right, though," she said, sounding sure of herself. Because she was. Whether or not she was the right person for the job, people would surely know better than to vote based on popularity.

"Can only hope so. I've been in races like this before. A lot of times it comes down to money and popularity, and with the limit on currency still around here... well."

Nathan sighed, "You should have seen how it was around here in the earlier months. So much bickering and infighting at times. Cooler heads have prevailed mostly, but then we thought we still had a home to get back to. And the Ohm was mostly a matter of rumors."

Politics 101

[identity profile] bluebrassmonkey.livejournal.com 2010-07-21 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Renne had little exposure to the world of politics and had, thus far, none at all in the ways of governing a populace.

Thus, with the news of something called an election traveling by word of mouth, Renne finds himself here amid the throng of life-forms, paper he can't make use of and a concept utterly foreign to him. Still, he understands enough of social interaction to get that large groups do need some type of governance. It is this understanding alone that brings him in with a string of questions in his mind and he doesn't hesitate to begin finding answers.

If anything, he refuses to be simply a name and statistic.

"Eee? Wha-t this be?"

Nehaalista was fairly amazed by the act of voting. At home, there was nobility on councils and in positions of power. It was much the same for the Draenei as it was the natural (and unnatural) races of Azeroth.

Her leg felt much better than it had, and she bounced her hoof against the meaty flooring as she waited to hear. She'd voted already (what a novel concept!) but to get an idea of what was going on, she had chosen to stick around and listen.

Well, listen and polish a ruby that was the size and shape of an egg. What a lucky prospecting find that had been! She wondered what to do with it as she polished it. Perhaps putting it in a silvery net and dangling it from something would be a good idea. Even if it was a bit heavy as far as humans' feelings about that sort of thing went.
