boys (and girls) and their toys | the sensoriums [closed]

[Closed to the mechanics and engineers who are going to be involved in the Great Rogue Upgrade project. see this com post.]

The sensoriums had been set to look like an empty hangar in which a couple X-Wings sat. Tycho had no idea what else the engineers would need for their initial planing phase, but he figured whatever it was, they could tell the sensorium to create it themselves.

He conjured himself up a crate to sit on, and scrolled through some squadron numbers on his datapad as he waited for everyone to arrive.

"'Course you did." She wasn't going to argue, manly pride and all that.

Ship tips, however, she could definitely provide. "What exactly would you like to learn, then?"

Dean rubbed the back of his neck, "Uh, start with the basics. I bet the engine part's probably about the same. It's the other differences I'm wondering about."

"Basics it is, then. Engine's a bit different, but there're enough similarities I don't think you'd have a problem."

She led him around the X-Wing, pointing out things he might need to know for today, other things to be on the look out for--compatibility with other parts, strength of some bits over others--and anything else that might come up while checking things over.

Dean listened closely, making mental notes. Occasionally he ask specifics of one part or another. His brain taking it apart, and figuring how it pieces together again and works.

He was a different kind of learner than Jamie. Caught on quicker on more of the tech, maybe, but he was also a lot quieter about it than the Scotsman. Jamie had questions aplenty, no matter what they were looking at, but if Dean had more questions than what he asked he didn't share them. A quieter kind of instruction, this.

Dean was more about focusing on details, and what he really needed to know. He didn't care about the history or anything like that. Just how it works, and how to fix it when it isn't working.

So some of his few questions were about, what about if this valve was off, or what if this gear came loose?

That was probably a good part of why this was more technical speech than anything else. Jamie wanted to know the whys and hows of everything.

Kaylee's answers were as precise as the questions. You'd lose power to that back thruster without the valve control, or gum up the entire thing if that gear popped out. If it wasn't a needed part, so much the better, and Kaylee spent enough time pointing out things that could probably be taken out completely as well.

Dean nodded, and made more mental notes. He wasn't as stupid as what people usually suspected or thought of him. It's just he didn't give a flying crap to anything he didn't consider important. Why school sucked for him. Most of it, he felt he wouldn't need or use while hunting so why the hell bother?

But this was all important so he was making an effort to get it down and get it right.

Kaylee didn't believe it to be complicated at all, but plenty of others did, so she was careful to make sure he was satisfied with everything she explained. There would probably be more questions later, when they were actually working, and that was expected. Not everyone was so easily adapted to new machines as Kaylee was, after all. Part of the reason she was here.
