Li Shang is a very methodical man. He is conscientious and cautious, he is observant (just not enough to tell when a soldier is really a woman in men's clothing), and he knows not to just leap into things. Spontaneity is not really his strong suite.
So while Mulan had been talking to others on the ship and gathering information that way (all to be shared with him), Shang had been doing his own research. Asking questions of the ship-spirit, reading in the massive library-without-books. Shang has explored the ship itself (and of course, shared what he's found with her). He's listened to others speaking, watched them all.
After all, they had been thrown in a strange, otherworldly place, full of spirits and other spirit-creatures. From the start, there had been no telling how much of what they'd been told is actually true. He had wanted to determine some things on his own, make sure these strangers could be trusted, and just as much could be learned by watching and listening as asking. It was less likely for them to lie to them if they didn't know he had been listening in.
Between what he and Mulan have found, he thinks he has a solid understanding of the situation now. The grief he feels for the loss of his world--for the loss of China--that is something that had to be dealt with in private, as well. But now is a time for composure. Also, he doesn't quite trust what they've been told. Not yet.
However, the people in charge of this rather...disorganized group of individuals that calls itself a crew do seem trustworthy, and he has deigned it time to speak with them and see what he can offer to the crew.
For that reason, he walks into the Precinct, cape a-flarin', hand clutched regally on the hilt of his sword, and to the first person he sees there, he bows his head respectfully in greeting.
"Are you Commander Kirk? The ship-spirit directed me here when I asked to find him."

"Honorable sir, my name is Li Shang, and I request an audience with you or the crew's Captain, to offer my allegiance. I wish to serve this crew in whatever capacity I can."
no subject
"Captain James T. Kirk, acting first officer. Welcome aboard Mister Shang. We'd be glad to have you."
He pauses, setting aside his omnicomm and perching on the edge of his desk, "What skills do you bring to the table?"
no subject
"I am a captain of the Chinese Army, sir. After my--" He adjusts rather quickly after the slip, "--after the great General Li was killed in battle, and our army decimated, I became the field general of our remaining forces and led them to victory against the Huns. Later on, a cadre of my soldiers and I foiled an attempt on the life of the Emperor by the few Huns that had survived. Because of this, I now answer directly to the Emperor and am called on to serve where he directs me to. I am a skilled swordsman, archer, and have great skill with many other weapons, and am an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant. I was number one in my class at the military academy and am schooled extensively in military tactics. I also have extensive knowledge of military training techniques."
He lifts his head to meet Kirk eyes.
"Though my part was but a small one in determining their final actions on the battlefield, I have trained some of the finest soldiers in all of China. While I need to learn how to use the strange machines and new weapons I have seen on this ship, I am confident I can learn how to use them and adjust my knowledge of military tactics accordingly."
Bowing his head again, his eyes directed to the floor, he says, "I would be most honored if you could find a way that I could serve in the best interests of this crew."

He smiled warmly, "Regardless, that's quite an impressive resume."
Kirk didn't know all that much about Ancient Chinese history, but he knew a few small pieces.
"We'd be glad to have your assistance. You say you trained troops before? Well, I think you'd do well working with the head of our training department, Master Chief. We're not exactly using just bows and swords, but having everyone receive training in hand-to-hand combat techniques certainly wouldn't hurt."

"Uh, I'm kneeling because you're a commanding officer, and I'm making a request of you, sir."
If he was the Emperor, he'd be bowing way, way lower. But Shang stands up anyway, seemingly thrown by the lack of formality.
"Beyond hand-to-hand combat, I'm especially skilled at instilling discipline. "
While watching them, he has witnessed, shall we call them, shenanigans.
"I'll talk with this Chief about creating a proper training regimen."

He settles, clasping his hands behind his back as he listens to Shang and he can't help but nod in agreement, "That's one thing they do need. Desperately. Especially if we have to fight the Ohm."
Shenanigans? On this ship? Surely you jest.
"I'm sure he'll be glad to speak with you."
