Department Meeting [Mainly for Security, but OPEN to everyone]

Leon had called for a full staff meeting for the Security team, though it was also open to whoever else wanted to attend. He had gone easy on his group since the Bridge mission, mostly giving them time to rest, recover, and deal with the things they've all been told. But now it was time to start moving forward again.

The meeting was being held in the Precinct, in one of the larger conference rooms. He gave time for people to file in and sit down where they would. Once everyone was settled, he addressed the group.

"First of all, thank you all for coming. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Special Agent Leon S. Kennedy, from the United States Strategic Command, and current Chief of Security here about Transmigration 9.

"A couple of weeks ago, we all learned some startling information. That our worlds were gone, destroyed by the Ohm, and we're all that remains. That we've been chosen to travel across the multiverse to fight the Ohm, save what remains, and possibly restore what was lost.

"All of that may or may not be true, and we have people working to verify that one way or another. The only thing we know for sure is that, unfortunately, we're all stuck here for a while.

"Because of that, there'll be a few changes around here, most of which you'll hear straight from the Captain and the Commanding Officers in the coming days. As for this department in specific...

"Security was formed with the intent to be the first line of defense for this crew; to protect them from any threats on this ship, and sometimes to protect them from each other. That hasn't changed, and never will. How we operate is going to change, however.

"For the most part, we've taken a defensive posture, waiting for something to go wrong before we deal with it. But a Fix on Fail strategy isn't going to work anymore. Now, before you get started, no, we are not going to start hunting down and locking up crew members who may be a problem someday maybe." He wanted to be clear on that point, particularly with a crew as prone to kneejerk reactions as this one. "But, acid spitting roaches, one of which was crossbred with an Ohm; a variety of class 4 viral and biological weapons, all gathered in a failed experiment to create a biological weapon to annihilate the Ohm; the Nightmare King trapped in Escherville; HAL 9000; the Yeerks... these are all threats that originated on board. Things that were left behind when the previous crew abandoned ship.

"We need to find out what else they left behind; what other experiments they had going that have been left unattended for God knows how long. To that end, we need to root through every section of this ship, search it from stem to stern to locate and deal with these problems. We'll also be working with Engineering and Neuropathy to locate threats and malicious programs in the computer systems.

"In addition, we're also going to be expanding our duties to become a full blown Emergency Services Unit. We have to be able to deal with everything from heated arguments and hazmat spills to heart attacks and hull breaches. Some people here would be better suited for certain tasks than others, but everyone will crosstrained in a number of disciplines. I don't want to be caught short handed because we only had a few people trained to handle, say, hazmat spills, happened to be on an away mission, or were busy running through a maze, looking for cake.

"As for dealing with the crew themselves, Stacy has generally handled that, but we do have a bit more leeway now. We can interfere physically in conflicts between crew members without worrying about violations, provided you're not using excessive force. If you feel the behavior of a crew member has warranted something more than just a violation, you can haul them down to the brig where they can sit and cool off for a day or two, and any other additional penalties will be handed down by senior command, if necessary." Because that whole trial thing worked out ever so well last time.

"We have a lot of work to do, people. None of us want to be stuck here, but so long as we are, we need to make sure everyone stays as safe as possible."

"Yes, there is, Ms. Takamachi. Come on in, have a seat." This conversation was probably going to take a minute or two.

She smiled as she entered, closing it behind her. "Please, call me Nanoha - everyone else does."

Nanoha sat where she could, looking the security officer in the eyes. "How can I help you?"

All pleasantness aside, Leon thought it was best to get right to the point.

"What do you know so far about the thing in Escherville?"

She closed her eyes for a moment, recalling what she'd learned. "It's supposedly an ancient evil that has been referred to as a 'dark god,' and is currently being held back and imprisoned by the combined efforts of the Seer who contacted several crew members about a month ago, and a young boy - the incarnation of powerful elemental forces - named Aang, though their powers are weakening."

"When it awakes," she continued, "it will attempt to divide the crew and turn us against ourselves by playing on what we fear, and I was warned to prepare people to stand together against just that sort of thing. Beyond that, Roxie Schreiber is currently working on efforts to combat it when it appears, and we believe it will manifest itself both in the physical realm and in a spiritual astral one, where it must be attacked simultaneously."

"Other than that," Nanoha paused, "We're trying to learn as much as we can while we still have time."

Well, she had been a bit more informed than he was, but that was the purpose of this meeting. He wanted to make sure they were both on the same page.

"Have you been able to locate Aang?"

She shook her head. "Not yet. I'm not one of those whose powers extend to the astral plane, but I understand that there's considerable interference there."

Which, itself, may be a clue to Aang's location.

"Alright. This is still more your territory than mine, but I'll need you to keep me updated, and let me know if there's anything my department can do to help. We don't have a whole lot of time left to try to stop this 'Nightmare King' before he breaks through."

"Of course I will." Nanoha paused for a moment. "To be honest, I'm not sure if we can. From what I'm understanding, he'll only become vulnerable after breaking through - as it stands, whatever's sealing him away is keeping him from being harmed. We're probably better off using our time to prepare."

She certainly had a point there, however... "Point, but if we can find out what's holding him back, we might be able to strengthen that to keep him locked away." It's worth a look, at least.

"That's true," she nodded. "And even if all we can do is buy ourselves more time to prepare, it might be worth it. But the weakening of his prison seems to be almost inevitable, and anything we can do may only delay it."

Nanoha's nose wrinkled as she frowned. "I'm concerned that the seal might break when we're busy with something else - say, the zombie attack. Even if we're prepared to deal with it on our own, it could be a lot worse if it happened at the right time. Once we understand the seal more... we might even be better off breaking it ourselves."

"Besides," she sighed. "I'm concerned for the boy's wellbeing. I don't like the idea of just leaving him there."

"I'm worried about the boy too." Which is why he wants to find him. "But for now we still need to deal with this from a number of angles until we find one that works." Which is the beauty of having a staff at your disposal.

"Of course," Nanoha agreed. "I didn't mean to suggest otherwise. I'd spoken with Roxie about an operation of hers intended to learn more about what we're up against - I'll see if she's ready to get moving with that. Information might be the biggest key here."

"But in the meantime... we should start preparing. Everyone needs to be ready to face their fears. That should be our first priority, no matter what else we're doing."

"Alright, like I said, keep me posted. I'll do what I can to help prepare the crew, but facing their fears isn't something I can do a great deal about. If you or your team have any suggestions on how we can be a bigger help, don't hesitate to let me know."

"I think we should tell them what we may be facing. Better to have them know about it than to not, don't you think?"

Nanoha tilted her head to the side, looking slightly sheepish. "I will, but... before I can, I think we're going to need a better understanding of just what we're up against. I'll get everyone working on this right away."

"Yes, we should. And you can make the announcement at your discretion, but you should give Command a heads-up beforehand." Since that was going to cause problems.

Leon nodded his head. "I'll let you get back to your work, then."

"Right. I'll prepare a short presentation to the Command staff with everything I told you here, just to make sure they all know what we're up against."

She managed a small smile. "Thanks - I'll let you know as soon as I have more ... do you mind if I call you Leon, by the way?"

He offered her a small smile in return. Well, not really a smile, but his usual :| expression quirked up a bit.

"Not at all, Nanoha."

"Great! I've always preferred first names, myself." At his almost-smile, her own grew a bit bigger. "Is there anything else you needed from me?"

He was about to say no, when one thing did enter his mind.

"Actually... yes. You wanted to be one of the first to get the memories of your lost universe restored by Stacy, right?"

The smile dimmed. It was true, she did - she wanted to know, because knowing would make it easier to help others with the same thing. But at the same time, the thought did unnerve her a bit.

Not enough to dissuade her, though. Nanoha nodded. "Yes, that's true. I'd rather know what happened, given the choice."

Leon wanted to know as well, but he only wanted to know if it was the truth. This ship had a nasty habit of screwing with minds as it is.

"Dr. Grey is going to be overseeing that, mostly to make sure everything goes smoothly." And to be on hand just in case everything doesn't go quite smoothly. "You should talk to her when you're ready."

Nanoha nodded in confirmation. "All right, I will." There was a moment's pause. "To be honest, I'm a little nervous."

"That's understandable." She wasn't the only one, after all. And there was a lot to consider in that decision.

"Do you think you'll be able to handle it?"

She didn't hesitate for even a second before replying, "Absolutely. I'll be able to handle it - don't worry, I won't let it affect my work, either."

He was quiet for a moment, where he didn't voice any further concern.

"Very well." He gave her a firm nod. "Best of luck to you."
