I have to admit, it's getting better

Asuka felt ecstatic. She'd gone down to the hangar in the dim hope that she might be able to find her Eva. It had taken her a while, of drifting through the multitude of vehicles, hoping to catch a glance of a familiar shade of red. And she had. When she'd seen it, she'd let out a whoop of joy and pushed off of the wall, shooting up to it's shoulder (the zero-g had taken her a while to get used to, though).

It was locked in place, staring out over the hangar. She settled on the shoulder with a grin, legs dangling as she leaned against it's neck. For some reason, it's presence just made her feel better. Safer. Like she could handle everything that was being tossed at her. She almost wanted to crawl inside it just now, but her plugsuits were stashed back in her new (admittedly spartan) room.Besides, now she was invincible. She had her Eva. When she was in it, nothing could stop her.

Nothing at all.

"But... calligraphy?" Asuka grumbled, "That's so boring!"

"That's the point," Luly says, raising a finger. "If it's something you don't want to do, you have to focus more to be able to do it well."

"But, it's... ugh," Asuka sighed, tapping her toe against the side of 02's neck, "...I guess. Doesn't mean I have to like it."

"That's the spirit," Luly says amiably, and reaches to pat Asuka's back lightly. "If you can come up with another activity you think would be more practical--and I don't mean that you'd like it more--feel free to run it by me."

Asuka let herself float and gave Luly a hopeful glance, "...playing the violin?"

"Do you already know how to play?" Luly asks, watching Asuka float.

Asuka glanced to one side, "...maybe."

Luly grins ('gotcha, weasel' says her expression). "It should be something you don't already know how to do, too."

Asuka grumped, "...does it have to be? I still don't want to do stupid calligraphy! I didn't even need to learn how to do those stupid Japanese characters by hand when I moved to Japan!"

"You're into music... Have you ever played the drums?"

Asuka blinked, "Not really. I've never done percussion. But how hard could it be?"

Answer: very.

"All right. I think we've got something." Luly mostly (but not entirely) manages to suppress a wicked grin at Asuka's question. "Do you have any other stuff already on your schedule?"

Asuka shook her head, "No, not really. I've mostly just been practicing on the pistol range and trying to stay out of the way after that whole... thing... with the zombies."

She waved a hand dismissively, "Not like anyone on this ship cares about me anyway."

"Hey, that's not true. It would look bad for me if one of my students got into trouble." Luly grins, as if to say: now you've got me, at least.

"Yeah, I bet it would," Asuka shot back, "I'll try not to inconvenience you."

"Y'know, you have a knack for taking things the wrong way," Luly says, rolling her eyes a little. "I was trying to get you to cheer up. Kids nowadays, oiiii..." She makes an over-exaggerated 'oh, my poor head' motion.

"I'm not a kid!" Asuka retorts, "And I can take care of myself if I have to!"

"Okay. A guy shows up right now right behind you with a gun, and he wants to shoot you. What do you do?"

"Disarm him, duh."

"Hnn, okay."

She takes hold of Asuka's shoulders and turns her around gently in midair, then pokes her in the back. "Show me."

Asuka's apparently learned something from her self-defense courses, because she turns her head, then follows with her hips the rest of her body, trying to shift the "gun's" point of aim away from her. She follows up by grasping the underside of the barrel with both hands, pushing up, followed by a quick yank back down. She steps into luly, trying to force the "barrel" vertical as she lashes out with a kick aimed at Luly's kneed.

There's one difficulty with all that... techniques made for use in a gravity well don't always translate so easily to zero-G, and as Asuka twists Luly twists with her, pulling herself up to neatly avoid the kick. She shoves her hand in towards Asuka's head—

"Bang!" Her finger pokes the girl's nose.

Asuka's eyes widened in surprise and then she dropped her arms, folding them across her chest as she sulked, drifting.

"...cheater."

"In a real fight, there's no such thing as cheating. There's just 'won' or 'lost'." Luly grins wickedly. "If you don't 'cheat', somebody else will."

"It's not cheating when I do it!" Asuka managed a smirk.
