Phase 4 - The Mastermind Behind it All?

Hal9000 had been defeated, but it isn't quite over yet. After the injured had been healed and Jaime Reyes had stopped blanking out, after they'd regrouped and got their stuff together, it was time to move on. Engineering and Neuropathy had yielded nothing fruitful.

They could, of course, just blow the ship to hell by messing with the engines, but that really didn't benefit them and they were already dead in space right now, the ship stopped in some random dimension. Neuropathy was locked down.

No, they had to make it to the bridge.

And this was one of the places on the way, a wide open area, sort of like a courtyard with something like a open-air cafe. A section tucked away was more like a lounge area, with a viewing window, like the one in Obs.

Here, someone was waiting for them, someone that had watched their every move.

He's not a very nice man. In fact...maybe they don't even have to go to the bridge. Maybe the one in control of it has come out to meet them.

[ooc: The old threads are still open, obvsly, but I'm trying to get everything up to keep things moving along.]

You people really frustrate the Chief sometimes.

"I'd like to clarify a couple of things," he says flatly.

"Firstly: Nobody is killing Lex Luthor. Secondly: I am not willing to risk the lives of the crew on trusting a man we have good reason to distrust. Besides the people who recognize him warning us, we have his actions. He has done nothing to help us and in inaction would have let us die in that maze without a single qualm."

"Thirdly: Right now he's unconscious. You can fight yourselves sick about him later, but right now we're dealing with a bridge full of enemies who outnumber us and will kill us when they figure out we're here. Not to mention whatever HAL released from Containment that is almost guaranteed to be tearing into our rear guard right now. We do not have time to argue about heroes and villains, we need to get in, finish, and get back."

"And finally: I never said I was a hero. I am a soldier. My job is to get all of us out of here alive as best I can, including that man." He nods toward Luthor. "He hasn't made a direct threat, but he hasn't proven himself very trustworthy either. For now we'll keep an eye on him. I'm not taking chances just because he's younger or from another world, if so many of you know a version of him that's bad news then I'm not laying our lives on the line on the off chance he might be different."

"Either way he can't be left undefended. That isn't decent, as has been said. I want to decide two things right now. One: What we're doing with Luthor immediately. Two: What we're doing to get to the bridge and get rid of the threat there."

He'd ask what the status is with Luthor's data, but he knows they'll tell him when they find something and asking won't hurry it.

"I said I'm taking care of him," Bruce replies firmly. Right now he trusts the crew with the boy about as little as he does the other way around. You'll have to pry Lex from his cold, dead hands.

"Good."

Okay, problem solved as far as he's concerned. Batman is competent.

"Now about the pirates on the bridge."

Suggestions, people!

"We're almost through Luthor's encryption. When we're finished, we'll have all the intelligence we need to mount a successful attack."

"Thankyou." He nods shortly to the tech team, then casts a quick glance at the other crew members.

"In the meantime: Katara, Zuko, Jono, anyone else who needs something to do, I want to know what Mr. Luthor has here. Food. Medical supplies. Ammunition."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Will do Chief," Katara said, now brisk and all business. She was definitely happy to actually start on their new mission.

She hadn't had that pep talk from Julian for nothing.

[identity profile] found-myway.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Zuko just nods and locks step with Katara.

"How do we know this 'Luthor' isn't in league with the pirates?" he wonders aloud, but only to her - he has no interest in starting the group on another round of arguments. "He might have already told them we're coming."

[identity profile] psi-flames.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Jono straightens from where he's been at the back, doing a little bit of acupressure to alleviate a slight headache. Something to actually do that doesn't involve people fighting sounds like just the plan. Aye, he says with a nod. Though he does cast a glance at Jaime to see if the kid's okay before he moves off.

Mai trails after Katara and Zuko, arms folded. She's not about to start another agument, but nor is she about to let Zuko out of her sight just yet.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"If that were the case, Jean Grey would have known, right?" Katara asked. "Besides, I don't think that's his style. I think he might want something from us. I meant what I said to Sokka about im not being like Azula: if she wanted something, she eould have taken it. This Luthor guy would probably have us do it for him. He wants to leave like we do, otherwose he wouldn't have been wearing the plantsuit."

She looks over at Jono and nods in his direction.

[identity profile] psi-flames.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
You can hide things from a telepath, Jono says with a shrug. 'Specially if you know 'at one's 'round. An', frankly, why go t' the trouble of takin' somethin' when you can get other people t' take it fer ya?

He shrugs and shakes his head. I ain't sayin' the guy's as bad as they all say 'e is. But I've known enough blokes like 'im in me own world t' know you don' buy what they're sellin'.

[identity profile] halfa-hero.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Me too. Trust me, if he's anything like Vlad, he'd could say everything he just said with a straight face, and then turn around and screw us over without having actually lied at any point. Dunno how, because I'm not that smart, but he could've."

[identity profile] grayaura.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Katara?" Mai speaks up, "Azula likes getting people to do her dirty work for her, even if she's not above doing it herself."

[identity profile] wolf-that-grins.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Guys? In case you've forgotten, we have a mission to finish here. SItting here arguing about whether or not Luthot should've been knocked out isn't going to get it finished any faster. It's done, it's over with, and unless anyone here has time travel powers that they're not telling us about we can't do anything about it. So knock it off already."

[identity profile] found-myway.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Nobody asked you," Zuko says, glaring over his shoulder briefly as he begins rooting through Luthor's things.

People intruding on his private conversations. Why he oughta.

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, but I think he needs us even though he acts like we're his tools. Besides, I don't know him enough to even call him Azula. He might have had some information we needed to know, despite him being a manipulative freak."

Not that it matters anymore now.

[identity profile] grayaura.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Mai carelessly begins rooting through Lex's supplies, looking horrendously bored. Wags' comment gets ignored, although she does give Zuko a slight smile.

"Or he was just trying to screw with our heads."

[identity profile] theregularguy.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
Sokka joins his friends in rooting through Luthor's junk. It's like searching for information about Aang! Except without the creepy medical experimentation stuff.

"That's my vote."

[identity profile] kaya-waterwave.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Katara glared at her brother and looked away from his general direction.

"ANYWAY Zuko, find anything?"

[identity profile] found-myway.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
A glass bottle, corked. Zuko looks at the golden liquid inside and uncorks the bottle to smell it.

His eyes water as the intense alcohol content of the scotch goes straight from his sinuses to his brain.

"Alcohol of some kind," he says, re-corking the bottle. "There's bottle after bottle of it."

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
"May I see that?" Picard asked, holding out one hand. He was curious. If it was a pure enough alcohol, it would certainly help for sterilizing dressings on their wounded, or perhaps as a mild pain killer. Regardless, he was letting the heroes who knew Luthor deal with Luthor. He didn't approve of treating him like a villain, but neither did he exactly disapprove of knocking him out to remove the young man from the equation -- temporarily.

[identity profile] found-myway.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Zuko hands the liquid over, going through the rest of the bottles.

"He has a lot of different types, but they all smell like alcohol," he says, after uncorking a few. "You would think a few of them would be bombs or something-"

[identity profile] gangstageek.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
"I know how to deal with crews trying to hijack and plunder, yo. Bonus if they're like actual pirates and not just using the term in general," Dark Smoke Puncher volunteered.

...well, he was a ninja.

[identity profile] clear-horizons.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"That's ... rather good scotch, actually," Picard replied, taking a whiff. Sealing the bottle again, he began sniffing them and looking at them, reading labels to see what they were.

"Scotch, vodka, rum, none of it synthehol," he mused. "The vodka can be used to sterilize medical equipment, depending, of course, on how much medical equipment he actually has." He stopped, however, at finding a bottle of wine. It was nothing special at first glance, until he looked at the bottle.

"Chateau de Picard, 2361," he read aloud. "This is from my family's vineyard."

[identity profile] static-shock68.livejournal.com 2009-11-06 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
"man's got every alcoholic drink you can imagine here except beer. I think he's an alcohol supremist, tryin' to keep the beer down." Static smiled as he said it. Yeah, it was a bad joke, and even the smile was half-hearted, but the tensions were so high...he felt like he had to try.
