Newbie Meet N' Greet

Meet n' Greet, smell my feet, gimme something good to eat! Unfortunately, the newbie meet and greet takes place the same time the command staff is congregating, so they might be a little late to the party.

But the crew is there to welcome the newcomers and explain their situation. At the end of the milling and spilling about, the command staff is going to start a general meeting to apprise everyone of their situation and discuss their next course of action:

Getting off the damn ship.

More to the point, why hasn't Sheik heard of him? A sentient shadow - the only one he knows of is that monster down in the Water Temple. What distant corner of Hyrule must this boy be from?

"Perhaps..." he says slowly, but it's Zelda who interrupts.

[I do not believe he is from a different place. But he feels... displaced,] she tells him softly, [Out of order. Almost as if he isn't from a different place, but a different...]

Sheik nods, almost as if to himself. "Perhaps... does this... place take people from different times, not just different locations?" he asks.

"I have heard that could happen," Shadow Link said. After the whole finding out about alien thing, he was trying to find out more about the people here and he heard something about people not being taken from the same place in time, but still 'being' there for when they shouldn't.

In that case, it's possible that this boy is from a different time entirely.

"Are you familiar with the Hyrule of the era of the Hero of Time?" he asks slowly, "That is the time I hail from."

Shadow Link paused at that, thinking about it. "...yeah, but that was a long, long time ago. Why?" Of course he bothered to learn about the other heroes. He'd heard rumors from the monsters about Ganondorf.

He had wanted to see if there was something true about them.

"Ah," he smiles slowly - that explains it. He can tell Zelda is itching to ask him about it, time that flows endlessly like a river for him as malleable and understandable as putty under her hands, but it would not be wise to reveal herself.

"Then you are from a great deal to our future - no wonder the Sheikah have been all but forgotten." And isn't that a cheerful thought.

The future? Well, he supposed he could be from the future. "So why does the Royal Family still remember them?"

Another small smile. "The Royal Family remembers a great deal," he simply shrugs - he knows that Zelda possesses knowledge of times even before that of the Book of Mudora, and that there is more yet in the archives, untouchable by Ganondorf, for her to learn when they return.

If they return.

"Yes, but why something prominent enough that my owner has seen it for me to notice? There's a connection, isn't there?" Well, he assumed the Shadow Folk would know that shadows all have owners.

"There is."

And that's all you're going to get out of him on that particular topic, unfortunately.

But now Shadow Link was INTERESTED.

"You're very vague, aren't you? Not planning on telling me why, aren't you?"

Sheik considers for a moment, then smiles faintly again. "Not yet."

Annoyingly cryptic Sheikah is annoyingly cryptic.

[You're a terrible tease, Sheik,] Zelda chides gently, although she's chuckling as well.

"Ah, I see. So, you don't know any other sentient shadows, I take it, outside the Sheikah being 'Shadow Folk'?" Shadow Link asked.

Sheik shakes his head. "None others." And neither does Zelda, apparently - this is something outside her considerable breadth of knowledge.

"You would appear to be something unique," he muses - "I know of shadows that possess limited movement and intelligence, but they are barely better than ReDeads with better muscle tone."

"Myself? Yes, I am an oddity. Couldn't say why exactly myself, but there are some that can become smart as, say, a thug on the street. Good fighting instincts, but in the end, mostly instinct and little true, intelligent thought," Shadow Link said with a shrug. "But I imagine you haven't met many of those type, either. Or you assume I really am so different I don't follow their usual instincts."

"I have not," Sheik confirms, "The only shadows I have encountered were barely aware."

Well, to be honest, it had been Link who had encountered it, but he had told them about it afterwards, in Kakariko.

Shadow Link nodded. "I thought so. You would have been more decisive in your response if you were."

"Quite possibly," he says, smiling faintly. "Still - I am to assume from our affinity with the shadows that we are akin in some way."

Shadow Link chuckled. "You aren't assuming we're akin all that much, if you really do at all. You're too uncertain on what I think."

"Better to be uncertain than leap to conclusions," he shrugs. "In that case, enlighten me. What do you think?"

"Paranoid," Shadow Link said with a shrug. "Not that it's bad, but you lack the ability to look confident," he started, moving closer, smirking up at Sheik. He was definitely shorter. Not quite child, but not much better than that height wise. "You don't have an real clue what I think of the Royal Family, so you won't hint if you're for or against them. To avoid conflict if for some reason I was violent about my beliefs regarding them."

He laughed. "Of course, that's a rather pointless fear."

Sheik's eyebrows raise. It's more to the point that if he tells others that the Sheikah are the servants of the Royal Family, he could potentially be putting Zelda in danger - but that's a good point, too.

"Paranoia has been known to save my life," he tells the boy shortly - "It's a useful personality trait when the land is made up of traitors and backstabbers."

Another inscrutible look. "And why is it pointless?"

"Like I said, it's a good trait, but if you make it obvious, then it just tells those who ARE out to hurt you can use it against you," Shadow Link said, a smirk planted firmly in place.

"Well, first and foremost, this ship? Whenever the crew starts to fight each other, barring extreme circumstances, usually those tentacles that dress you come out and pin down whoever is fighting. One on one, easy to stop them."

"And what," Sheik says slowly, "If my concern was not merely physical? Something that may seem innocuous to me may be valuable information to the right buyer. In that case, I would rather keep my mouth shut."

"Well, you'd have very little to fear as, as far as I've found? We're the only ones form Hyrule," Shadow Link said with a shrug.

He had tried not to think about it yet, but the boy's words make Sheik deflate just a little. "Oh," he says quietly, the disappointment evident in his expression.

So Link isn't here with them. Zelda gives a little sigh of frustration.

"Perhaps that will change in the future," he says half to himself, then shakes his head. "In that case, what is your name?"
